Purchased July 21 from Richmond Centre Apple Store, Canada

13" i5 MBA:

Samsung SSD
+
LG Display

I have absolutely no problems with the LCD, I love it to death. Use a proper calibration profile and it looks even nicer, such as the one I use:

Personally, I'm more worried about the battery because according to Coconut battery, my Mac is 27 weeks old, meaning the battery has been sitting idle around since around January since it's the first batch. Don't know how accurate that is though.

Just received my 13" i7. It has the Samsung SSD and the LG-Philips display. That's fine by me. I was mainly hoping to get the Samsung SSD and don't really care as much about the display. The LG one looks okay anyway.

13" Base model

I just got my 13 base Macbook Air. It seems a lot faster than the late 2009 MBP I sold to get it.

SSD: SM128C
Display: LP133WP-TJA3

I was expecting both the Toshiba SSD and LG display so I am pretty satisfied. I definitely would have never known the difference if I didn't read this thread.

Now I am trying to decide if I want to put a Wrapsol on it.

Just thought I'd post an update: Turns out my trackpad is defective. A column on the right side of the trackpad, stretching all the way from the top to the bottom, seems to not work correctly. A column of the capacitive network below the glass plate is probably defective. The effect when dragging one's finger across it is that the mouse cursor either stops completely (even if you keep moving it over the rest of the trackpad) or just jumps around slightly.

I just came off the phone with Apple and they've promised to send me a brand new MBA and let me keep this one until the replacement is delivered. So, at least I'll have something to play with while waiting another two weeks...

I'm so used to getting defective stuff these days that it hardly makes me irritated anymore. The only thing that bothers me is that I got the Samsung SSD and now I may be getting the Toshiba if I'm unlucky. Well, as long as the new machine actually works correctly, I'll be quite happy either way. :p

Samsung display & Toshiba SSD. Bought at Best Buy in Farmington Hills, MI on Saturday. Going to return - yes - I know - totally anal retentive, but I bought this for the speedy SSD. This is my mobile photo-station, so was planning on doing lots of large data dumps to the mothership iMac, so sequential reads/writes actually do matter to me!

The Samsung display was nice side-to-side, but still had pretty noticeable "darkening" of the display when pushed back. Hopefully going to get a Samsung SSD next go around. Having just sent back three separate iMacs due to combo of yellow screens and screaming hard drives, I have to say my faith in Apple (after 10 years of faithful followership), has declined considerably.

Urgh.

How do you return your MacBook Air though? I want to return mine.. but I'm afraid to.

That's a good question for those who bought in store and are exchanging, Are you just returning and playing the parts lottery in store or are you going home first to check parts? I can't imagine they would be very happy with you opening and exchange continually in store.

That's my concern. I only have 1 Apple Store near me and even if you exchange it at other stores, you still have the exchange receipt. It's a lottery draw for the MBA :/ I want the Samsung SSD over the Toshiba but then are there any proofs that it does perform a lot faster than the Toshiba? I know sequential read/write speed on Samsung is impressive compared to Toshiba. The stores would be annoyed by how many people are returning it just because of the SSD. Do you think my keyboard at the "spacebar" have uneven lighting? would that be an excuse to return mine?

Quote from the article above:

"Based on these numbers alone I don't see any reason to believe that the LG panel in the new MacBook Air is any worse than the Samsung panel. However I do believe that there may be an explanation for the perceived inferior quality of the LG panel. The LG panel exhibits vertical color/contrast shift more readily than the Samsung panel. Unfortunately I don't have them both here to show you a side by side comparison but the LG panel seems to be slightly more sensitive to vertical viewing angle. As I mentioned in our original 2011 MacBook Air review, the 11 is a particularly tough system to use due to the height of its display. In order to get perpendicular line of sight to the display you need to tilt the display back and your head down. If you're off by just a few degrees you'll start to see color/contrast shift. On the LG panel that classic TN panel distortion seems to come a bit sooner than on the Samsung panel."

Personal experiences confirmed this. I have LG and my friend has Samsung. I've reported my findings on the other thread. Samsung has slightly more even backlight thus a little more viewing angle.

Also through first hand testing/experiences, when you turn the brightness all the way up while watching a video, LG will have the shadow or dark area appeared washed out (became slightly light grey instead of dark shadow), while samsung still remained dark although still a little washed out.

Also noticed that the Samsung panel in the Anandtech test end with model number "04", while my friend's end with "03". Maybe a slightly different panel. Nevertheless, his Samsung panel appeared to be slightly brighter than my LG (uh-oh), maybe by just 1 bar.

Some might find LG display more pleasant due to slightly warmer color, and I find Samsung panel has slightly more vibrant color, a little colder, without the blue'ish tint.

All in all, both a great displays. Differences are minimal and Apple ain't stupid to put 2 panels where 1 is noticeably inferior (although Apple somewhat did that in the past according to owner's reports).

13" Ultimate

I have the following:

13" Ultimate
SSD: TS256C
Display: LP133WP1-TJA3

I was thinking of exchanging mine. I'm planning on doing this just once. I just want a second chance at getting the newer drive models and display.
Can I just go to the Apple Store and exchange because I want the faster drive? Or is that not a valid reason to exchange.
-thanks

Within the 14 days, you can return for any reason. Theoretically, you can return your MacBook Air, and then turn around and buy a new one. That said, I don't think you'll notice much difference with the Samsung. I had a Toshiba on my 2010 and a Samsung on my 2011. The 2011 is a lot faster because of the CPU, but disk-intensive operations are about the same (i.e. it takes about the same time to start an application or copy a large batch of files).
