Delivered!

Wow, so I get told by Apple to expect delivery on Monday, I call TNT yesterday, they say Tuesday, and finally the tracker says it is still in Shanghai.

Then, just moments ago I am awoken to the distant sound of the doorbell and thought no, it couldn't be. I flew to my feet and ran through the house yelling out to my mystery door bell ringer: "WAIT!!!". Then open the door and there it is, a great big 29kg box of Apple goodness!!!

So, hopefully this is some hope to those in Australia that your order could turn up much earlier than they expect.... Pictures to follow of the unveiling...

I realize this is a "First World Problem", but the 2nd display is actually... awkward.

Going from a 15" CRT to a 21" CRT? Awesome. 21" CRT to 23" HD Cinema Display? Great, and no more 85lb display. Going from a 23" HD Cinema Display to a 27" LED Cinema Display? I got used to it after two days. This though? It's awkward (still downloading XCode amongst other things).

For the record, the total power draw for the setup, for things such as basic browsing, is a mere 115W.

Now that is one badass setup. :D

This is a temporary setup. This is a 4x2 desk. I'm actually building out something in a closet that's a bit smaller (45" x 21"). Unfortunately they'll be at more of an angle. I'd need a 52" wide closet to have them not at an angle. There's plenty of space for the keyboard and mouse though, which is fantastic. The iPhone dock will also go once iOS 5 is out. I use the wired keyboard to avoid the "reach-around" for USB ports, and it's better when coding (cursor/page movement keys).

But yes, there is a height difference between the iMac and the Cinema Display. I'd rather not go the arm route, either. It adds a lot of unnecessary weight and cost (can't get cheap arms since these are both over 20lbs), and since the iMac still has "the chin" you still lack symmetry.

The book is "Under the Radar". I haven't opened it in over a decade. It's getting some mileage.

I used to do something similar with a laptop screen. Turns out ergonomics was horrific though..... Shifted to a primary display front and centre and the laptop off to the side for ancillary stuff. Thats at work, at home I've opted for 27" so I only need one display.

basically a straight head = win.

My iMac arrived today. I'm still setting everything up. Going from an Air to this is amazing. My work computer used to be an 8-core Mac Pro, so going from that to the Air was a struggle.

For those with a 27" Cinema Display and a new iMac, the first gen Apple TV works really well as a means of leveling the screens. It's about 1/4 inch too high is all.

It arrived today!!!!!

Ordered: 13May
Shipped: 14June
Delivered: 16June

I went home early from work to wait for it. Lit some candles, laid out a trail of rose petals to the room, put on some Barry Manilow, and waited patiently. Once it arrived, I was not dissapointed. It's an amazing machine. Cant wait for the weekend so I can have enough time to really get to know it. My old 2004 PowerBook G4 was a trooper. It lasted me 7 years and survived 3 deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, I can only hope that this iMac can be as reliable. (not taking this one anywhere though, lol).

I harped on others for not sharing pictures, but I've been so taken aback by this new machine that I can see why!

I finally go around to uploading the pictures and blogging about it, though, so I thought I'd pass it along to you guys since this thread really helped me out during this entire process.

Thanks for all the help with the spreadsheet and the encouragement to stick with the SSD in the rough times ;)

Pictures and Words HERE

Arrived day earlier than FedEx stated, on time WRT the 2 day shipping and 6 days earlier than original.

Yes FAST, how fast? Unofficial simple test.

Handbreak 64 with a 7.02G MKV file (720p) converting to AppleTV (v1) m4v file at 1.93G

Mac Pro 1,1 (2x Dual-Core Intel Xeon @ 3ghz, 4GB Ram)
iMac 12,1 (i7 @ 3.4GHz, 16GB Ram)

Mac Pro had 35 minutes left to go when the iMac finished the encoding, and I had the input and output on the 2TB drive not the SSD.

Not Quite a 2x performance improvement over the old machine.

Love the picture! Reminds me of the line on Despicable Me: ITS SO FLUFFFFYYY!

It's here

UPS just brought me a gift. Actually, 2.

Yeah, I ordered 2.

The other one is actually for my colleague

Doesn't have something to do with RAM check during initial boot-up?
The more RAM the slower the boot?:confused::confused:

Woo Hoo. UPS just turned up and delivered my first ever desktop Mac. :D

Unfortunately due to work getting in the way, I won't be able to unpack and play until this evening. I'll report back later with my first impressions.

Tracking spreadsheet updated.

It's here and it's gorgeous!

What can I say?

I'm glad to have it, finally :) I had to pick it up myself at the post office, though, TNT didn't cover my area themselves - relying on Norwegian post and their logistics parner Bring.

The wait is over, now all the installation waiting is, uh, well, waiting :p

I'm glad that I didn't pay for expedited delivery. :)

Ordered on 6/5 with expected delivery of 7/26. When I ordered over the phone, the rep had stated that it would take 4 to 6 weeks because of the SSD (which I already knew), but as he was ending the call, he said, "you'll get a shipment email in a couple of weeks". I assumed that he didn't really mean a couple of weeks, but maybe he knew something about the soon to be improved time frames...hmm... Anyway, I'm glad that it's here much earlier than expected. Now, hoping that there will be no issues. It's going to be a long day at the office.
