In the new Macbook Pro pre release discussions I didn't see anyone pleading for no usual ports. Thin and light like others have managed with ports? Absolutely! Heck even the Surface Pro has them and it's like a tablet.

What they have are ports that can only do a fraction of what the MBP ports can do. When everyone gets UHD monitors and super-high-speed external storage, they'll wish they had ports that can handle that instead of an SD and USB-A port. If you change your MBP every year or two, that won't be a concern, but for those who keep them for years, the new MBPs are a better choice.

Fair play. Never say I don't learn some things hanging around here. I'm not that external storage or even a UHD monitor guy but! I understand why some would appreciate the new setup. My laptop(s) are used as just that. No docking etc.

The sample sizes are small but......

I didn't sample. What I needed was a used MBP with all the outputs, and one that didn't have any recognized issues. I searched the internet for days and found nobody complaining about any systemic issues involving a late 2013 15 inch MBP with only the internal graphics Iris Pro 5200. Many of the others apparently had some issue with the switching between the IG and DG. And so, I would agree that at least in complaints around the internet its is impossible to find a lot of people complaining about the same thing about anything in this model. At a MacBench of single/multiple of 4100/13000, and a graphic bench of 1100 for the Iris Pro, so far its worked great for me. Using it for standard stuff and some iMovie work, it doesn't even get warm.

Not to discourage you, as I think 2013 was as good a year as any, maybe better, but there are always systemic issues with a complex machine. 2013 was subject to Staingate, for example. A quick search shows complaints typical of those that happen with every model (just a random sample):

Yes..... there are occasional things with every machine. But nothing systemic that appears hardware related. All three of those appear to have been software related. And none of them were running El Capitan or Sierra. YThanks for making my point for me.

Staingate was hardware, of course, and I wasn't searching for hardware issues, since you didn't specify that, so no point about that has been made. Nor is it clear all those were software--the sounds probably weren't. I'll leave you to believe as you please, in any case.

How is anyone able to accurately comment on the longevity of the 2016s given the lack of any meaningful passage of time?

It seems like people with older models are keen to justify their decision not to upgrade but ultimately it's just self-serving and anecdotal.

In any case I believe that the machine I have is working great, and in addition it came with a full year's warranty. If its not broken down by now, then it probably won't. So whether you believe my method or not, it worked for me.

I never heard of staingate in any of my research because I wasn't interested in the low reflective screen machines, I was interested in the glossy ones. Any special thing added to these machines should not be tried in its first iteration. We learned thst with software way back in Motorola times, when no one but crazy people bought anything new when it first came out.

Subsequently, my research since has shown that if its going to happen it happens between 7 and 15 months after purchase, and while not unheard of in 2013 machines with the non-glossy screen, it was a lot more prevalent in the screens starting in mid 2014 to late 2015.

I fail to undersand your need to argue with me about my methods in choosing a machine without issues, especially since it actually worked for me.

I wasn't talking about your method, which I agree could be useful. I was addressing your claim "its impossible to find a lot of people complaining about the same thing about anything in this model." That was surprising to me, and potentially useful info, so I checked it out. If the 2013 non-dGPU is more reliable than more recent machines, more information is needed to show it.

I hope yours will last you for many years to come.
