wow, that must have been massive. made even frontpage news in the main press over the Atlantic...and we don't even play Football here I think :D

seems like the amateur refs are just showing solidarity. Bravo!:D

It's very important to understand that once it's ruled a "simultaneous catch," that part of the play cannot be reviewed. That's why nothing changed when it went up to the replay booth. They can only change the spot.

The refs still f*cked up, but that's why it wasn't overturned on review

Great game by both teams ruined on both sides by TERRIBLE officiating. This is an embarrassment to the league.

Blame the NFL not the refs. Those are d-list college refs. It cannot be easy for them and most of them look scared ******** out there. I feel badly for them and pity the NFL for not actually stepping up and working with the actual refs.

Good point Jessica. And I'm so tired of hearing all the talk about how fans should boycott games or turn off their TV's until the regular refs are back. Seriously, how out of touch are these analysts, radio personalities, and commentators.

People enjoy drama as a part of their entertainment. That's why reality tv and other drama programming does so well. That's why I have to sit in traffic when there's an accident on the other side of the road. People like to watch the car crash and see the aftermath. There's no way that the average fan is not going watch football because of the refs. Heck, most will watch more so they can see what the next big controversy is going to be.

Sure, people are going to be upset when a call goes against their team, but that doesn't mean they aren't going to show up next week to support that team again. And do you really think that a Bears fan is all broken up that Green Bay took a loss last night? Heck no! All the drama and controversy is causing people to talk about football more.

I'm sure there are people in Vegas who aren't happy about the way this referee wrinkle is affecting sports gambling, but hey, they will survive. The house always wins and they will find a way to capitalize on this as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they start taking bets on which replacement crew jacks things up on a week to week basis.

The bottom line is the games will keep being played and the fans will keep watching the game they love.

I get that they're going to make bad calls but at least explain the penalty - that's what makes me mad. How many times have they thrown a flag and not give a player/jersey number? Where is the penalty coming from? It just feels like they throw the flag whenever they want. "Hey, it's been 4 minutes. I think it's time for another flag" (*throws flag, calls bogus penalty")

It appears to be a cluster****. It looks like one of the main sticking points for the refs is a pension. While the NFL has the ability to pony up the $$, I don't think they want to set a precedent for part time employees--which the NFL has a lot of.

You also may know that pensions are really a thing of the past. I can understand the argument for both, but there has to be something that can be done even if they don't want to call it a pension.

Yep. Until the NFL gets hit where it matters - their pocketbook - nothing is going to change. If the coaches are genuinely pissed and want it fixed, sit all the starters until the regular refs are back.

Instead of the coaches yelling at the refs, etc. they need to meet with their owners

The refs are doing the best they can... they just aren't capable
So yelling at them, intimidating them, scaring them, etc. doesn't improve things

Until the owners realize it is going to jeopardize their revenue (missing playoffs, injuries, etc.) they have no incentive

Fans can whine all they want
Players can bitch all they want
Coaches can yell at refs

But the power is with the owners

On the radio here in Dallas they are saying that the refs are asking for about $60,000 more a year than the NFL is willing to pay. I've not heard anything about a pension as of yet, but I haven't actually researched it either. Is there any kind of precedent in the NFL for a pension? Do any other NFL employees have the ability to earn a pension?

Oh I know. But it's complete bull **** that a company and league that just signed a FORTY billion dollar tv deal from 2014 to 2022 is putting this crap product on the field for a couple million dollars.

Roger Goodell is a joke. He's becoming worse than Gary Bettman.

I hope Bob Kraft called him up and told him to stop ****ing around and get this **** straightened out. The Patriots could easily be 3-0 now if it wasn't for complete blown calls by these replacements in the last 2 games.

I think the older refs want the better pension and are fighting the league. Now the question is should the refs be full time employees. If they are in charge of how the game is run why make then just weekend employees. Maybe they will get the calls right themselves if they do this full time. Lets not forget that people were pissed at the normal guys last year for the amount of blown calls.

Yes, but all officials in every sport make mistakes. Last year in the NFL was nothing out of the ordinary.

It's practically unfathomable how unbelievably bad and over their heads these replacements are. This is the worst officiating any major sport has ever had. And like many people said, you can't blame the refs, they just aren't qualified for this. It's all on the league management, and it's so embarrassing at this point it's practically laughable.

The league was hoping this game of chicken would force the refs to agree. But now with the blown calls they are the ones that have to cave. The officials have the upper hand now.

From what I've read the refs have a pension and the NFL wants to replace the pension with a 401(k) (significant downgrade there). The NFL also wants to hire another crew of officials, which the locked-out refs seem fine with, but the NFL has not explicitly stated that the pool of money it gives to the ref's union (which is then split among the refs) will be increased proportionately. So it looks like the NFL wants to pay the refs less and take away their pension.

Basically what the refs want will cost the NFL 0.033333333% of its annual revenue (the NFL generates 9 billion annually and the hold out with the refs is over 3 mil in compensation). IMO it's nothing but a power play by Goodell. Sure, the regular refs made mistakes (everyone does) but the amount, not to mention the variety, of blunders by the replacement officials is unreal.

Lethal

Not to mention the pace of the game is all over the place. It takes these guys 10 minutes per play to get the call right.

----------

You underestimate the arrogance of the NFL
The longer this goes on the worse it will look for the NFL, and image is important to them.

I still don't think it matters to the NFL until people stop watching/attending the games, advertisers pull out, and revenue begins to fall. If anything this controversy is getting more people talking about the sport. Everyone is pissed while Goodell is laughing all the way to the bank.
