Not really. I bought a base 21.5" iMac when the 2011 model first came out. If comparing apples to apples I wouldn't trade it for the new base.
Yep, had my base iMac around eighteen months, and I know who got the best bargain. This latest iteration is the anorexic poor relation.

I agree this is a brilliant design and the best iMac ever.

The components top even what people were wishing for and speculating about - i.e., Ivy bridge cpu, fusion drives, the 680MX GPU (wow!). It baffles me some of the negative posts here. Idiots.

No other AIO computer (Dell, HP, Lenovo) EVEN COMES CLOSE to the hardware specs of the new iMac. Any naysayer idiot care to dispute this??

Really???

As much I would love to have a All-in-one, the lack of upgradibility is a huge turn-off for me, Apple or anyone else.
Yup. And indeed the iMac is not now (if it ever WAS given it's never had a BD drive) an "all-in-one" because it doesn't play CD/DVD/BD discs.

It is pretty though. And "pretty" has a place in this world, if you don't need any more from it.

No, CS will work on the 21.5. However, I was thinking of a maxed out 27.

It will work but not recommended for those needing to mid to heavy duty work. And yes it will work wonderfully on a maxed out 27

- Removal of Optical Disc Drive (can get USB SuperDrive or alternative ~$79)
- Removal of FireWire 800 port (can get a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter ~$30)
- Poor placement of the SD card slot
- No (user?) RAM upgradeability (21.5-inch)
- Downgrade to 5400rpm 2.5" HDD (21.5-inch)

I've read issues on the graphics offered, again in the 21.5-inch, by users more heavily impacted by those details than I... anyone want to add more?

Alright, these are valid points.

-Optical Drive: you covered this.

-FW800: you covered. I have an OWC 8TB FW800. But USB 3.0 is more than six times as fast as FW800. I already have a Drobo 5D on pre-order, and currently have a Synology DS1512+ 15TB which is faster than FW800. My point is that I won't miss my FW800 drive when I order a new iMac. This drive will move with the old iMac, where ever I put it.

-No (user?) RAM upgradeability (21.5-inch): this is a step in the wrong direction for Apple. User will have to BTO more expensive Apple RAM.

-Downgrade to 5400rpm 2.5" HDD (21.5-inch): isn't the Fusion drive or SSD available for 21.5"?

Have to laugh at this forum, People are jumping and saying the New iMac is beautiful without even trying One 2: I posted a picture of a teardrop imac before the release of the new iMacs and said if it looked like this I wouldn't buy (not how it looks now) someone posted "I don't care I'm not looking at the iMac from the back. And got over 20 ups.

Now considering the new imac looks the same from the front as the previous model I presume everyone Is saying it is nice based on the back and the sides.

Personally feel people on here adapt to what they want to and talk a lot of p** p**. When Apple anodise the next iMac and bring with it new mouse and keyboard plus change how it looks at the front I'll be happy.

At least then i"ll know I am sitting in front of something different. As well as 1g vid ram and a faster HDD plus Ram upgrade on 21".

Until then people can keep making threads based on day to day feelings as last week it was I'm not looking at the back this week it's sexy from the back yet we use computers from the front

There seems to be a lot of ex or about to be ex iMac owners on the Mac Mini forum who are keen to buy into the Mini as an alternative. TBH that is what I'm looking to do next time around if Apple don't do something different by 2014 and at the very least offer better value for money at the lower end of the iMac range.

Only thing that I don't like is the time-frame between the announcement and unboxing :D.
I'm all the way for the 27 inch-er. This means ordering in December and the best scenario for the delivery - the end of January. This SUCKS!

I have ASUS external blue-ray 12x writer - bought it right after the 15" Retina MBP keynote. Thinking in perspective helps sometimes.

My only concern so far is whether my combo printer/scanner/copier will work with OSX - it's Samsung :D

My impression is that a lot of the "whining" is from those interested in the 21.5. A Mac Mini is a viable alternative for those consumers. I think that those who are interested in the 27 and particularly the BTO 27 are a different consumer. I find that the BTO 27 to be an attractive options compared to the current Mac Pro or the maxed out 15" rMBP, at least for my purposes. Again, different price points, functionality and needs.

Quite possibly, but for many of us the 27" isn't a viable alternative and it isn't simply about price. I ordered the 27" when I first bought into the iMac and returned it a week later. The reason for me being it was simply to big. I found it gave me a headache, the text was too small and it didn't look right for it's situation. I find the 21.5" is just right but the new one is not good value.

Thankfully my current 2011 iMac will do me for some time to come so hopefully Apple may be offering something different and better by then.

They sell a lot of the stock configurations, as the Apple Store specifically carries their stock configurations. If a fusion drive is offered, it's likely to be a steep upgrade for the lower end model. 8GB of ram will probably work for the market that the 21.5" model aims at in the current year, but going to a slower stock drive with Apple's weird problematic file system isn't really a great idea. Even Apple wanted to replace HFS+ a few years ago, but faster drives have made it somewhat more tolerable.

I'm interested in the 27". Considering all negatives, I'll say the new iMac is a fantastic new offering. I'd also have to thank Apple for doing this Update.

I wonder if the naysayers consider the situation if there was no Update this week, or even next year? Would they go to windows then? Good luck with that. Consider the hardware specs in all the other AIO computers - even the ones just released. None of these even come close to the new iMac. BE Thankful for this great update to the iMac.

I don't recall reading when Apple would start taking orders in Dec. But if it's in the first couple of weeks I'd think that even a BTO might be available well before the end of Jan.

See...There isn't real reason for complaining. The price isn't only for a computer. Imacs have a display and keyboard as well as a mouse. So specs can be slightly lower than the true price. However, I love the new look. And I understand why apple is doing so...Less costs and better for the planet in some ways.

I don't mind the new iMac but we will have to wait and see if making it so thin will cause heat issues. I also hope the new display design fixs the issues the current LED iMacs have with the heat causing the display to get grey marks. No ODD is not a big deal to me but on a desktop computer i don't see the point of making the iMac so thin just to leave out things that really should still be there. We will also have to wait and see how well the new fusion drive actually works and if the pricing for the 3tb option is reasonable. My 2008 iMac is on its last legs so i really need to get one.

This is where your argument becomes somewhat flawed. Apple's lineup doesn't completely mirror what is offered by other vendors. You're looking at this relative to other all in one form factors when this is basically what Apple offers in a desktop at this time. The mac pro isn't something I'd suggest today due to unknown future and overall support. It could always lose software support early for something weird like AMD de-supporting a gpu option or something like that. I don't know if you can see how incredibly weird it is saying to be thankful that a company makes annual updates to its product line. The one thing I do find interesting is the focus on the display. That looked interesting. I don't know how it tests out or how well it will age with time, but trying to cut glare is a step in the right direction.

My impression overall is that too much engineering is dedicated to aesthetics. I have to wonder if this will mean throttling like we've seen in the notebooks in the past. The point is that form factor shouldn't be the ultimate deciding factor in something that will remain stationary. Improvements in technology have a tendency to allow form to be minimize over time, but they tend to favor that in place of other improvements.

Well you're a little off here; I'm looking at the iMac compared to what other vendors offer in comparison. The other vendors are the ones trying to 'mirror' the iMac, not vice-verse. I'm not even talking about non-AIO desktops, i.e. Mac Pro vs Others.
Apple hasn't made an update to the Mac Pro in years. I've browsed the forum and putting myself in their place I can't understand/accept the reason for this when there was a devoted user base. The iMac Update is a valid and true one, but it's not inconceivable to have had a situation similar to Mac Pro. That's something to be thankful for. [That may seem weird, but that is the reality] Otherwise go for an alternative. Or simply be ungrateful and buy a new iMac anyway (to the Naysayers).
