when apple finally updates iMacs, after this unusual delay, I will hardly believe it when I see it.

I really hope the next one has ssd as a base option, I really hate to have to take one of these apart. I will if i have to but god that process looks evil on the 2011.

I was thinking about the SSD dilemma too. If apple follows their current model (and all previous releases), they'll inexplicably charge you up the nose for this now-common SSD tech.

I'm wondering if the best solution is the get the standard HDD, then just leave the computer running/sleeping (so boot time isnt an issue), then just get a fast SSD drive for USB3 for loading larger files (games, moves, pics, music, etc.).

me personally I don't need a lot of space, I could easily get by on 128gb considering i do mostly streaming, but since ssd has come down in price so much i think i'm going to get a 256gb. And I will most certainly tackle it myself if it comes down to it. SSD is just infinitely better in my mind. Such a huge boost in speed, especially if you run two SSD's in a raid 0 config.

Next tuesday is a slight chance and then the next tuesday I feel is probably the biggest date. I cant see retailers like Amazon having zero stock for 2 weeks of the iMac?

An excellent point. They can't go without stock for too long.

Yea but the ships in 2-5 weeks on both base models on Amazon US right now is disconcerting. 5 whole weeks? :(

Could be just a placeholder because they don't have an accurate date. So they're covering their ass by saying "up to" 5 weeks.

Also, Amazon sometimes doesn't get the new release on the official release date. Sometimes they do, other times they don't get them til a week or two later.

So you guys seriously think it will be as soon as a week or two from now? I mean, I hate to be the pessimist here, but we've seen stock shortages before, and nothing has come of it. I'd love to see an imac in 2 weeks as much as anyone, but I think we need a little more to go on than just stock shortages.

agreed.

All speculation at this point, obviously. More hopefulness than anything. But to echo the forum, if we don't get some type of news within "2-5 weeks", it most likely will not happen this year at all.

I agree 100%. 2-5 weeks will bring us to the end of October and if its not out by then we can kiss 2012 goodbye. At least by then I'll know whether to pick up a referb 2011 or not : /

Might not be as easy as that...I'm guessing the current iMacs are out of production..? What is left, is what can be bought. This is likely also partly the reason why third party retailers are running low.

Lets hope sim apple engineer forgets an iMac in bar :D

Yes, this is what we heard would happen. I think Kuo said that there would be extreme stock shortages before the final release.

Has anyone stopped to wonder, and I'm not sure if it works this way, but with the screen being laminated, will that make it easier to access the internals? (no worries about dust under the glass)?

No, bad idea. Regular hard drives are already excellent for storing and transferring larger files like movies. They are huge and can transfer ~100 MB/s sequentially.

SSDs are only really good for randomly accessing small files, e.g., your operating system and applications. If you want to upgrade an iMac, I would put an SSD in an external enclosure, connect it via FireWire or USB 3, and then use that as your boot drive and use the iMac's internal 3.5" drive to store larger files.

yes, I was thinking the same thing. I think it mostly depends if Apple make it harder to access the internals or not. If the design is the same but with different screen technology then it could potentially be easier to access the internals:)

Amazon Tax

What really hurts is that since last Saturday we Californian's now get dinged with tax on Amazon. That's about $150 down the drain.

I guess the best option following release will be to go Best Buy CC same as cash and at least grab 3K frequent flyer miles.

Well, if it makes you feel better, now the State of California can't track you down and jail you for tax evasion for failing to report your next Amazon purchase. (Not that they actually planned to for your prior purchases, but they'd be in their rights to do so.)

I worry that they stop easy access to RAM. That would really make me reconsider getting one if they do.

Large hard drives are passe for consumer users. It's all about cloud storage. Between google and apple and Dropbox I have about 50gigs of free storage and that number will grow. I'm hopeful my 256gb SSD will more than meet my storage needs.

Obviously professional photographers and the like are in a different situation.

not so sure...

If anything their plans have always pushed toward reducing size, etc. So I would imagine that we could see iMac that is almost as narrow as the new MacBook Pro if the screen is laminated, I'm afraid that Apple tends to like to keep us folks out of the inside of their machines, so I gotta believe that the next iMac will even more difficult to upgrade...just my .02 cents...

At this point I'm not to concerned with what the iMac 2012 specs will be because I know it'd be a great machine no matter what. Now what I really want to know is WHERE THE F ARE THEY? So sick and tired of waiting
