I just can't believe how many people are in the same boat as me even down to the waiting for the refresh/redesign from about February and unfortunately are still waiting.

Back then I got as far as my finger hovering above the mouse button about to click checkout for a base unit imac from the refurb store on the Apple website when I thought I'd just have a quick check on macrumours for the predicted refresh date....and here I am, still waiting. I'm now obviously committed for as long as it takes.

I do need USB3.0 for video edit o/p broadcast monitor connection and also for a speedier HD so I can use the Thunderbolt/displayport connection for a monitor. On this basis the new MBP would do me very well but like most people commenting on this forum a bigger screen and speediest processor is more motivation than portability.

I would say we have about six weeks before we're talking a 2013 release for the imac range - I just can't see Apple releasing imac until after the new year once the new ipad is released in October.

I'd say Apple would definitely release both 21.5" and 27" imacs together so if 27" screen yield delay rumours are to be believed we may well be looking at a later rather than earlier release.....but we really can't be sure can we?

I would like to think people would know the difference between the 2009 iMac vs the 2011, iMac but you are most likely correct that most do not know maybe 85 to 90% not 99%.

The truth is the difference between the 2011 and the 2012 won't be that much. When compared to the difference between the 2009 and the 2011 it is night and day. But the 2012 won't be much better then the 2011. Especially if apple goes to

nvidia gt 650m and not a better gpu such as the Amd 7970m

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-650M.71887.0.html THESE ARE NOT GREAT SPECS.

Not sure why you plucked just those two cards to compare. The 650M is beaten by the top 2011's 6970m, and will probably be just the low 21" card (where it destroys the 6750m). For the top 27" the only reasonable choice from Nvidia is the 680M, which compares favorably to the 7970m.

I'm in a creepily similar situation (I could have written the same post, minus the extra thunderbolt display and with "photo" instead of "video"), and I do agree that they're probably waiting for the 27-inch to be available in acceptably quantity to allow at least a decent amount of immediate shipping (with delivery dates probably slipping to the "2-3 weeks" range very quickly.)
I believe that at this point they are not building 2011 iMacs anymore — pure speculation, of course — which would mean that at some point these damned 2011 iMacs are bound to be sold out.

I honestly kind of fear the whole iPad mini thing. There hasn't been much talk about it later due to the iPhone 5 rumors / keynote / lines / shipments / deliveries, but if the rumors pick up on that and the iMacs aren't mentioned, we may be in trouble. It's obvious that, alleged secrecy notwithstanding, Apple leverages all the rumors for marketing purposes. If the focus shifts from iPhone to iPad mini with no iMac talk, it means that either it's going to be a very quiet release (with which I would be perfectly fine, and I suspect you and many others too), or it's coming in 2013 with retina or whatever. Let's just hope that Kuo wasn't s---ting us, but then again the ball is in Apple's court.

Yeah, I definitely wish I had gone for a refurb months ago, kept that for a couple of years, and planned for a new machine in a year and a half or so. :(

Everybody assumes an EOY introduction is unlikely but so far I haven't heard any coherent explanation as to why. I don't see why an iPad Mini release would interfere with a new iMac release. We still have 3 full months until Christmas. Surely that's more than enough time for 2 product introductions and their associated breathing room. Releasing a new product after Christmas instead of before is sales suicide.

I put very little stock into these rumors of "lamination" issues with new iMac screens. Why would it be necessary to laminate the screens to the glass? Surely those extra couple of millimeters of thinness doesn't matter for a dekstop computer. And I doubt they're going to add a touchscreen to the iMac (already made a point of saying it's not ergonomic, plus, smudges). Repairability would decrease dramatically. MAYBE it's some kind of anti-glare measure but I don't see a lot of people complaining about glare with their current iMacs.

Stock

So now 3 Apple stores in NY area are No longer stating a date for in store pickup. Its now "see cart for avialability". This Goes only for the higend 21 inch.

Just before the weekend the dates slipped from sept. 28th to oct.1st. However, some stores have, in the meantime, infact restocked their iMacs. Amazon is status quo.

I'm so tired of waiting that I'm going to take it on the humour side. I don't want Apple to update iMacs anymore, as it's so funny to follow all the availability and stock recount. :p

The lamination process apple used in the rMBP didn't just make the screen thinner, it reduced reflection by 70%. So IMO this technique is very much welcomed on the iMac too - particularly because of the reflection reduction.

You know how it is, when there are no news, you have to make them up yourself.

I kinda feel like I'm a Fox News employee atm :p

Now that Back to School ended on Friday I think we can truly start to keep an eye on Apple Store for the new models.

Hopefully the release would even as early as coming week...

How can he say 'imminent' when the release will be in October? I wonder who told him anyway?

Not really, in theology it means God is right there and ubiquitous. Not really something one can say about the iMac.

Well, I understand that Apple is the fruit of sin, but taking theology into account seems a little far-fetched. :p

I was referring to the "everyday" usage of the word:

im·mi·nent   /ˈɪmənənt/
adjective
1. likely to occur at any moment; impending: Her death is imminent.
2. projecting or leaning forward; overhanging.

In any event, we'll see. Any Tuesday may be the right Tuesday now that the iPhone stuff is hopefully dying off and the Back To School promotion is over.

Personally, at this point in time, unless I'm getting around a 400 dollar discount on the current iMac I wouldn't go near it. And to be honest, if the new iMac is just around the corner then I'd probably want a 500-600 dollar discount. In Japan, Electronic shops will knock the price down by around 500 bucks on the older high end models to get rid of excess stock once the newer model has been released. So for me, I'm better off waiting it out no matter which model I buy.
But as somebody said earlier... If I had known it was going to take this long, I would have picked one up last year. My top of the line BTO early 2008 imac is running a bit slow on ML and is now sitting at 4 and a half years old. Perhaps I should do a clean install of ML and see if that speeds things up...

Yeah, you're right. But I've turned to God for help since this iMac crap...

I'm in the same boat as many of the posters (in my case I've been waiting since November), and I'm starting to fear that in some time (not too much) from now, it won't even be worth getting the (hopefully) soon to be released iMac and rather get the next one!

I am not willing to wait any longer than the 2012 iMac (or early 2013, [cough, cough]) but if they realease the Haswell iMac soon after the ivy bridge (say 6 months), then it will be very sad.

But as I (and most) have learnt already, buy when it arrives, otherwise the wait may be longer than expected.

Haswell is rumored to be introduced between March and May 2013, barring any delays. That means another 160 days or so at the earliest. I highly doubt that Apple would let the iMac lapse for a total of 670 days... but then again who knows?
