So Apple just announced their earnings event on the 25th October. I hope the iMac is out before then.

Most probably - as has been the case in the past.

17th Oct - announce the goodies.
Deliveries of new goodies (Mini iPad & new Macs) to commence the following week

Let's face it, if you actually NEEDED an iMac right this minute you could get one no problem. You can "plan your computer purchase" by walking into almost any Apple Store and walk out a few minutes later carrying a new 2011 iMac. I don't know what area you live in, but the market for used 27" iMacs in the Seattle area via Craigslist is thriving, and you could easily buy used if you are worried that an investment in a brand new 2011 iMac would be obviated by a refresh soon.

The only reason you're on this forum tracking these rumors is because you can afford to delay your iMac purchase to see what nice-but-mostly-irrelevant upgrades Apple will give us with the next model for "free." That's smart, and I'm in the same boat, but it's unwarranted to call Apple "unreliable" and be angry at them for not delivering something they never promised, especially since they are still selling perfectly good products that satisfy your needs today.

Dude, lighten up. The iMac is INCREDIBLY overdue for a refresh and buying an early 2011 iMac at original cost is not a wise move.

I think part of the redisign could be a perforated back similar to the perforated pattern the mac pro has. It would with the ventilation system a lot

Eh, doubt it. A lot about ventilation is having a directed flow of air. With the iMac, cold air comes in through the bottom and it travels all the way up and out. Pretty much ideal. If you put a bunch of holes in the back, everything becomes much more complicated there's the possibility of the air flow being "short circuited" in certain areas, maybe some components wouldn't be cooled as effectively, etc.

It does bother me how hot the current iMacs get, especially the 27" under load. I'm sure Apple is trying to save money on heatsinks and trying to keep the computer quiet by running the fans slow but it is amusing to think of different potential cooling systems. Since the iMac is updated so infrequently (grr) it seems like they could make custom heat pipes that run to a big heatsink along the top of the case under the ventilation slot. It would be pretty neat...

I'm not crazy. I'm not saying I'd prefer a 2011 iMac to a 2012 iMac. Obviously a refreshed iMac will be better. I'm just saying that a 2011 iMac is better than people here seem to think and is absolutely fine if you NEED to buy an iMac right now.

As for improved GPU performance, you're right, I definitely forgot about this. The vast majority of people aren't into high-end 3-D games and/or running GPU-accelerated photo/video filters though so it's basically irrelevant to almost everybody. But yes, definitely it's great for some people and they should probably wait for the refresh just like I'm waiting.

It's all this and the BIGGEST reason -- The damn price is still the same as it was 18months ago.

It's a rip off!

A total and utter rip off to pay the same price for 18month old tech. If it were discounted then it would be fine. But Apple is taking the mickey at this point selling 18month old computers with old tech at those prices.

You wont believe whats going to be released. they bring a whole new meaning to the word "glass"..... its amazing! 23rd Oct

whats with the cryptic ********? everyone writing on these imac forums is frustrated to all hell with apple for keeping us in the dark and we don't need people like you saying **** like this just to annoy people. If you have something to share then share it, otherwise shut your mouth, we are all as on edge about a new imac as you are...

Apple will always keep you in the dark. its how they do business and keep our shares soaring. don't get worried. The iMac will come soon enough and then all people will do is moan about what isn't in it.

Haha... made me laugh.

It really is getting frayed around the edges in here though! There'll be effigies of Tim Chef burning in the streets if nothing is released by Oct 23rd I reckon!

Like to agree but anything they serve up on the mobile device market in the next few weeks is just going to stir the negative press on the maps issue and how foolish Apple are looking right now. "post pc era" - err maybe they should have got the mobile map app squared away before it tanked on the global scale and forced a lame apology and a landmark "use our competitors" statement. wtf are they thinking? So they better be along with a fix for that before they open their mouth for anything else iToy or the press are just going to have a field day.

as an aside on the press - have to say that the BBC are going at Apple with venom recently - 4 straight days on the apology as the lead technology story is a bit much, and their iPhone launch coverage was focussed on the negative and the most controversial of articles was veiled as a 'viewpoint'... hmm

However all of that then makes me quite hopeful that there may be a focus on the home PC market and possibly the iMac.
With the integrated OS system of Windows 8 launching imminently, (which I am sure the BBC will have a boner for) Apple have got to be seen as ready and seamless as the W8 system is being touted.

Personally I don't think they are, as it all is looking a bit sloppy right now.

I heard Jeremy Clarkson liken the Ford Ka to Windows 8

Actually, no, it isn't.

I'm sorry you've been conditioned to think that everything about computers will get twice as good every year and the old stuff will cost half as much. That was only ever the case for a few components, and that was a while ago.

The price of the monitor in the 27" iMac is basically unchanged, or at least the companies selling monitors based on this panel (e.g., Dell) haven't changed their prices for the last few years.

The spot price of raw aluminum has basically been the same for the past several years, and the simple commodity components like heatsinks, fans, speakers, and the power supply will not have decreased in price. Actually, since the price of copper has gone up somewhat, if anything, they are probably more expensive for Apple, along with the motherboard. And speaking of prices going up, because of the flooding in Thailand last year, the prices of hard drives nearly doubled and are just now getting back to normal.

So let's look at the components that you would expect to decrease significantly in price. Sandy Bridge processors (more or less the same ones used in the 2011 iMacs) are still being manufactured, they're still for sale on Newegg, and they cost $10-$20 less than similar Ivy Bridge processors. Likewise, you can still buy a Radeon 6750 card for $80 and a GeForce 650 card costs $105.

So, yeah, Apple is TOTALLY RIPPING YOU OFF because they might be making about $40 more profit than they used to on the sale of a computer that costs $1200 to $1700. I can see why you're driven to swearing in all caps and bold print. (Actually, I can't. I'm being sarcastic.)

Why is everyone insisting they will release the new iMacs before the earnings report? Both Lion and Mountain Lion were released the following day, not to mention the new Mac Mini and Macbook Air last year with Lion.

It makes sense to start the new fiscal quarter with a new product or products. I think it could be the 30th of October.

Edit: They also announced the Apple Thunderbolt Display the day after their earnings call.
