i dont mean to be a jerk but can someone explain me why i keep hearing apple will do or asking for a matte option for this upcoming imac? i think at this point is pretty obvious that its not gonna be a matte screen they are gonna use the same glass and lamination as the retina macbook pro, so why are some people saying matte? Also why are some people saying spec bump only when every rumor say a thinner imac meaning new tweaked design not spec bump only? arent we past this? why are we talking about it? Again am i missing something ?:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:
this is a serious question not in a sarcastic way, i really dont understand can someone explain

Very taboo topic.

Thing is that many pro-users actually need matte. Staring at a glossy for 10-12 hours a day is not really doable - major health concern.

Also the colours are not correct on a glossy for high-end print-matching and illustration work and is virtually impossible to calibrate correctly.

Then there is the reflection issue.

So - essentially it's pro-users who want matte, consumers who don't really care and another group that get angry if you discuss it.

This is starting to feel more like the retina MacBook event where we hoped an iMac was coming but with no concrete evidence. We knew everything that would be announced, which is starting to shape up again. An thus far no iMac, yet again.

I am starting to get a bad feeling.

give it a few days...9to5 mac likes to spread the news for more readers. Like they did before WWDC, they evened it out with "this just in..." kinda news every day. We will see a lot of info coming this week about every product. On monday we will know everything, before the event. It's always like this now. It's allready leaked some, actually more than ever before on the iMac. Let's hope for more leaks, its more fun then.

i understand that and i really dont mind if its matte or not but i dont think apple sees the imac as a "pro" machine i think they see it as more a consumer computer. but who knows its just i dont understand when its been said many many times that apple will use the same glass than the macbook pros retina, then i still hear people saying "i hope theres a matte option" "didnt you get the memo". lol

My best case scenario for the next iMac.

The 21.5" and 27" remain largely unchanged, maybe a little thinner with Ivy Bridge and new Matte screen option but still include DVD and all current ports on the back.

Matte is gone. Move on. Take the glass off if you want matte so bad.

Who want's to wager that we won't see a new iMac next week?

There are "confirmed" rumours of both the iPad mini and rMBP 13" for the 23rd but NOTHING concrete about the iMac.

A complete redesign and only one single leaked part...? I don't buy it.

We're basing pretty much everything from a forum post on a Chinese website... I'd LOVE to be wrong but I have a bad feeling that some hearts will be broken next week...

Yes this is exactly what worries me.

rMBP with little but glossy screen is the best of both worlds IMO. Matte screen has reflection too, it's just washed out, which ruins contrast. Apple has something good going on here with glossy but little reflection. I can't understand why someone would prefer the matte option over this. So I support apple in the decision that this wont happen any more. One day we will get a non reflection screen, and apple is heading this way in the right way.

We've rarely gotten 'leaked' iMac news before. It's just not something most people care about anymore.

That's fair enough but we're still all getting super excited from a single forum post on a Chinese website... that worries me a bit, in fact, a lot!

I've been waiting for the new iMac since April so I'm as keen as anyone but why are we all giving so much weight to this one, anonymous source?

As I said, I'd LOVE to be wrong but I think we might be reading too much into this...

We have been expecting an imminent release prior to this.

Also, just because it isn't at this event, doesn't mean it won't be released any day or within a few weeks.

youre right. we can hope though

According to some French sources it will be released tomorrow. Though I kinda find that hard to believe.

I read a French website that said it would be released on a tuesday but they didnt know which one it was. Personally I think the 23rd is more likely now that we have the redesign rumors.

I'm just happy that we might see it this year. The other day I was a bit worried and considering already buying a refurb or doing the hackintosh thing. All is well.

I've been lurking around here for the past few weeks as I'm in the market for an iMac. Being a student, I've been pretty much decided on the 27" 3.1GHz i5 refurbs for $1659 as that saves me a good deal of cash that I could really use.

My only question right now is if it's really worth it for me to keep checking every day to see if the "new" iMac is released? Is there really any benefit to me if I plan on going refurb anyway? From what I understand, apple has a 30 day policy where I could get my money back if the price drops, correct?

I have to disagree a little bit. I am an illustrator/graphic designer, and I'm currently using a 23" late 2005 HD apple cinema display, which is 100% matte. At my last day job I used a 2010 27" iMac. Yes, the reflections were frustrating. Yes, it was an unacceptably mirror-like. But it was infinitely more accurate to print with the colors. On my home display it's virtually impossible to see near-black and near-white colors. I can't tell you how many times I've made something in photoshop that I thought had a white background but actually had 1-2% grey in it and I had no idea until it printed or until I opened the same file on the 2010 iMac instead.
In addition it will always be impossible to get deep blacks or truly deep saturated jewel tones on a 100% matte screen.

Ideally I'd want something in-between and just not work directly next to or across from any windows and get some curtains. Apple claims the rMBP is a 75% reduction in glare from the standard MBPs. While that is a bunch of malarkey, I do think there is about a 25% reduction in glare. At least it's a step in the right direction, and I wouldn't want them to go 100% matte anyway.

Conventional wisdom says that consumers are lured by glossy and pros want matte. I think it's actually the other way around. General consumers want to go outside and to cafes with their laptops and iPads. They want to watch a movie during a bus trip without being distracted by reflections. Professionals want deep blacks and a wide spectrum of accurate colors - even if they have to make sacrifices like dimming the lights and putting up curtains.

I think I would wait 8 days if I were you. You can always return it but that is a pain. The 2011 prices will drop as soon as the next iMac is announced and the refurb store will probably have more options.

Same opinion. When you see 2012 prices and specs, you can decide if they are good enough for you, or you still prefer the 2011 refurb model, which will be cheaper then.

No no no no no... don't worry for one second. I'm confident this time we'll see the new iMac. I already had a good feeling about the Tuesday 23rd, before the chinese leak came out.

Cheer up guys! It's going to happen! Don't worry, be happy! :)
