Good bye useless CD/DVD Drive!

Apple continues to drop this component = :D

What will be left with it? The Pro and the 13" Macbook Pro which might drop it (i.e. that model) when the 13" rMBP hits.

Oh sure, useless...

Two things I really don't need in the new iMac:

1. Thinner translating into the it becoming even more of a desk bound laptop (ie. no ODD, more lower powered mobile components, weaker graphics processing, fewer ports)
2. More expensive

I might have to suck it up and by a refurbished 2011 iMac, though I wanted USB3. Well, at least we got news, even if it isn't all good.

I'm in the same boat, I've been waiting for the new imac for donkeys, I may pay an extra 2-300 on top of the price of the existing 27"model if I can afford to but I'm certainly not going to bankrupt myself in getting an ivy bridge model(probably with no optical drive too) if its over £2K, so could well be a 2011 model for me.

But I'm fine with thinner as long as it still looks tasty.:D

Implying you couldnt do that with an cheap external.
There is no need for an iMac to have an built in ODD drive now.

Thinking more about this Could there still be just updated old version + redsign like with the macbook pro's? Or unlikely without a retina version?

My point is that a DVD drive is hardly useless.

And sure you could use an external, though that kinda takes away from the "all-in-one" factor.

New iMac

While everyone has an opinion on too heavy or too thin, or too whatever - from a graphics/video designer's perspective, the iMac regardless is a must have. I've been very happy with my 2011 27" iMac and depending on what a new model offers, would purchase the new one. In addition, I am hoping an update comes to the Mac Mini somewhere down the line.

At the end of the day, it's okay to be critical if you are that passionate about it, but if you can create a long list of why it's currently a bad computer, then don't buy it. There are plenty of options out there for you. For those of us who use it daily [and do appreciate the mac experience over the alternatives] and believe it is the standard in form and function, we will happily celebrate. Count me in.

Whether it's phones or tablets or computers, I've come to learn that there is rhyme and reason to Apple's madness - which is why I changed over every piece of hardware in my life to Apple products in just under two years - and I've never looked back. It may not always "just work", but as a whole, it works like no other.

P.S. To the individual who included in their post about the cheap feel to the iPhone 5... that is a perfect example of different perspectives as the feel to the new phone in my experience has been second to none - with much improved battery life to boot.

Form v. Function?
You could argue that it is the same thing. The nicer something is to use and look at, the more you will use it, the more productive you will be on it.

A forum thread [Google translation] posted to Chinese site WeiPhone.com earlier this month claims that Apple is planning to introduce its next iMac at a press conference either this month or next month, with the new iMac offering a redesigned body with a thinner profile. The report includes a photo of what is said to be the logic board and other internal components of the new iMac.

The authenticity of the photo can not be confirmed, but iFixit's Kyle Wiens tells us that it does appear to be plausible based on some similarities to current iMac components. One example is the silver disc located behind the main layer of components. This disc has been found in Apple's iMac models over the past several years, and it houses the Wi-Fi antenna directly behind the Apple logo on the rear of the iMac's body. The Apple logo is the only plastic portion of the iMac's otherwise aluminum rear shell, thus providing the best location for optimizing signal reception.

Other items of interest pointed out in the photo include the Bluetooth antenna (top edge), fans, and hard drive.

The redesigned iMac is said to be considerably thinner than the current form factor, with the machine's thickness almost impossible to gauge when viewed from the side. The curved rear shell is also said to appear more like a water droplet than the squared-off design seen in the current model. Hardware in the lower portion of the case and probably no ODD. Looking at the picture I can see the trending of the hardware in the bottom.

The report also claims that the new iMac's screen is glued to the front glass of the machine, in line with previous rumors stating that Apple is moving to fully laminate the two components together for improved display quality.

Also in line with previous rumors, the report suggests that Apple may first update the 21.5-inch model with the new design, which is said to maintain the existing "chin" below the display even as the body is tweaked with a thinner profile. The updated 27-inch model could then follow somewhat later, as has been suggested due to the challenges of laminating the larger display and glass with acceptable yields. The new iMacs are also said to be more expensive than the current models, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! iMacs are supposed to be the middle of the road for Desktop iMac. Damn thing better have a True Desktop Graphics Card. but it is unclear how significant any pricing changes would be.

Finally, the report claims that Apple is indeed working toward a release of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. The notebook is said to already be in assembly in "Mexico and other places", with Chinese production coming later this month. Uh Oh, the endgame for a pump and dump, And so begin the trade wars!!! Next step WORLD WAR!!! The new 13-inch model is said to carry a code name of "D1", which fits with the "D2" code name that turned out to be the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

The report also seems to suggest that Apple will be tweaking the 15-inch model to address a few technical issues such as heat dissipation, but these changes will apparently be made behind the scenes and not be presented to consumers as an updated model.

Apple is reportedly set to hold a media event on October 23 to introduce the iPad mini, but it has been unclear if the company plans to introduce its new Mac products at the same event. If Apple does decide that its updated Macs are significant enough to warrant a presentation for the media, it will likely show them at the iPad mini event rather than trying to squeeze in yet another separate event.

(Thanks, Jun!)

Now that I've read it seems Ifixit guy thinks it could be legit. Hope to get a new iMac before Christmas. Got this new wood desk and all ready to go. A new chair will follow with the iMac.

Ok so New iMac this year. New (Something) Mac Pro Maybe 2013! All is right in the universe.

Now DIE MAC MINI DIE!!!! GRRRRRR Sorry I hate that little "Switcher Machine"

Just what i've been afraid of - 21" first and 27" in the abstract future. Damn! I don't need better screen, I need better specs! Am I alone in this? I've never heard of people having complaints about the current iMac displays, have you?
Let's hope this rumor is wrong!

Hate when people say "considerably thinner" how thin can a desktop really be?!? The thing need to breath, plus why does a desktop need to be so thin?!? Not as if your carrying it around. Take it it will have laptop parts if so thin right?!? I'll look forward to seeing my future iMac.
Just purchased one in feb so I won't be picking one up until at least the 2nd version of this version hopefully with retina and for same price as prices are now.

Can't wait to see this thing.

I really can't see how being thinner will avoid making the first issue worse.

And given the compromises Apple seem to have been willing to make just to make the iPhone 5 thinner when nobody wanted that either, that scares me.

If they are aiming to go thinner then they will likely take a page from the retina MBP. Take out the ODD, go SDD on the storage etc. solid state drives don't have the same heat issues as old school so that will cover part of the issue right there.

I love the idea of a 27 inch retina slimline of such a nature. I don't even mind the idea that they might glue it so I can't add more ram etc later. So long as I can max it out to 16 GB and that empty space from the ODD means I can have more drives for internal storage. Or bigger ones. Or both.

I want to wall mount my iMac to clear up some desk space and a slimmer profile works better for that.

Then all that would be left is some serious iTunes Store content upgrades, STB with more onboard storage for buffering and rental storage (I really think it should be more like 64GB in that box) and 40 inch (if not larger) slimline with side ports that include HDMI, Retina, high refresh rate, anti glare
Cinema Display and I'm set for a while

Has Apple EVER released a product in November/December holiday timeframes?

No, I don't believe they have.

However, that means nothing. Apple has always done what they want, not what the industry/media thinks they should do. And now that it is Tim Cook's Apple if he wants to release something like revamped iMacs right before holiday shopping when families are more likely to be looking at that new iMac for the family, etc then he will do it.

Lol... fail. Double down on security.

Steve was the Master marketing genius.

with out him I like how Tim leaks these things slowly and steadily. I am NOT disappointed, I like it this way. Remember it is all about keeping us excited and looking forward for the events and products.

purpose still served .

Sorry, but this is "Exactly" what is wrong with Apple

If anything should "SHOUT" form over function, making a non mobile desktop computer (that is build for a serious fast task - computing) thinner just for aesthetic reasons, when it makes no difference to the products usefulness is just utterly idiotic.

It is possible that Apple disagrees wi your opinion that there is zero performance reason do making the iMac thinner. And as Apple is making this machine it is there opinion not yours that matters. If you don't like their decision, don't buy it.

Buy an external. Splurge and get a Blu-ray drive and drop that crappy 480p version.

Eh, IMO BluRay isn't worth it for these older movies. The film grain is so coarse that you don't get much more detail out of it by going HD. Plus DVDs are easier to rip.

Well said.

I wish apple would STOP making things thinner and START making thingd BETTER .

I never said to myself "i wish my imac 21.5" was thinner"

It is kind of upsetting that they are pushing the whole "thinner and lighter" agenda on to a device that is intended to sit in one spot and never move. I'd rather have it be the same thickness as the 2011, squeeze as much power in there as you can, keep the optical drive, and give me an extra hard drive bay that I can actually access without a map and enough room to get to the RAM.

I'm sure it will be a beautiful machine, but to charge more money for a "feature" no one was really asking for sucks. Was anyone on here upset by how thick the 2011 iMac is? Hopefully the price will be the same.

I disagree completely. The iMac is equal amounts of form and function, a perfect combination in perfect proportions.

A tower? No form, all function (even the Mac Pros). If I had one today I'd be thinking, "where's the nearest closet I can stick this eyesore in?"

I agree about the Mac Pro being an eye sore. There have been folks talking about Apple making a more 'Pro' Mac Mini model and from a looks point of view I agree with much of their thoughts. The idea is a base tower that would look something like 3-4 minis stacked together. RAM, graphics cards etc would install via removable back plates and snap in pieces (not unlike RAM in the iMacs). SSDs might also be the same. Additional/HDD storage would connect via thunderbolt (with a major drop in price) including drives either made by Apple or licensed to use the Mac Mini look so they create a cohesive look. not sure how practical it is but on the looks front I love the idea

I'm a little concerned about the "thin/light" factor and am also very interested to know what kind of graphics card the new machines will have, but... all that being said... my gut reaction to this is still pretty much SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.

I am an excited camper this morning.

No one? I don't want a disc drive and I want it to be thinner.

It'a 2012, not 2006.
