Do you really think that the ethernet will be taken out of the pros? I'm new to macs and this forum, so maybe I'm just stupid but what are the chances that the ethernet stays?

Yes, rumours have said no ethernet, and it makes sense if Apple are making the MBP thinner. Hopefully Apple will sell a USB3/Thunderbolt adaptor.

After all this hype about a possible redesign, I think it would be quite hilarious if there was none. When a redesign came in 2008 there were leaked photos of the new unibody. When the MacBook Air was redesigned in 2010 there were leaked photos, as well. If we don't see some sort of legitimate leak within a few days of WWDC (say by June 7th), there's likely no redesign.

I agree here with you.

You guys think you have it bad, I have to wait even longer... I'm using a combination of cash and Bill-Me-Later... I just hope the price stays the same or close if the cheaper 13 inch model is even an option. I'm going to be cutting it so close I have to wait until some third party vender that takes BML gets it in stock to save money from not paying the tax. Also since I don't have a high credit limit on BML and they don't allow multiple payment methods with BML it gets crazier!! I will have to buy gift cards from the site (I guess my best bet will be B&H?), wait on them to come in, then combine those with my debit card to buy the new MB. :(

Yes you definitely have it bad, but maybe you shouldn't be cutting it so close? Maybe you could put together a Hackintosh? I know it's not a MBP, but it's a lot less expensive too...

I agree here with you.
I'm glad to hear it. I quite like the current design. I think it would be difficult for Apple to make it any thinner without sacrificing functionality.

I'm sure those people who just bought a 2011 MacBook Pro will be quite happy if there's no redesign since, knowing Apple, last year's products are made to seem very outdated in comparison.

May be. But the rumors that emerged last week looked like they were somehow "planted" by Apple. That said, the new MacBook Pros do not necessarily have to launch at the WWDC. They may be announced some time later. But the fact is: Apple will have to reveal that there is a HiDPI mode in OS X Mountain Lion (and even in Lion) during the WWDC. If they don't announce a retina MacBook Pro by then, they're going to spoil the surprise.

Interesting thought on the 17". I agree just because it is not their best seller does not mean it does not make them a good profit. I have read that their high end models have much higher profit margin than their base models. I would like to see them keep the 17"

Here's a question - would you still buy one if it didn't get the retina-display treatment the way the 13" and 15" probably will?

Hardware watchers have noted that 13" and 15" retina displays are showing up in the supply chain. This is a pretty good indication that at least the 13" and the 15" MBPs will be getting retina displays. No one has found a 17" retina display for sale from suppliers, though.

I waited from January until early May and then I couldn't wait anymore; the current models are still quite nice. I do agree with you though, ahh well. These things do hade high and nice re-sale value hehe xD :) :apple:

Not worth buying a 17" MBP if it doesn't get a retina display. Retina displays will get you more desktop area, as you'll be able to zoom out text on the screen (in Word and in web browsers, for instance) and it will still be readable.

- The Air seems to sell fine without Ethernet port
- Apple tends to minimize the amount of ports and hardware interfaces on all it's machines
- Apple usually doesn't consider the needs of small user subgroups
- one could argue that 3 USB ports are more flexible than 2 USB + Ethernet, since you can always have an adapter

I guess that the redesign will not have a separate Ethernet port. I would prefer if it stayed, but I think it's unlikely

Now in addition to my mini-display to VGA adapter I will have to carry around a USB to Ethernet adapter, since I do use it. But since I have a late 2011 model, I don't have to worry about that for another 2 years probably.

If the 13" doesn't get thinner and still loses the OD...then i really hope it gets a Quad core option!!

and would really like them to stick a 14" screen in that same footprint

So your saying the Mac Pro and iMac lack ports then?? Just wanted to pick you up on that cause I think they have more then enough.

Yeah - this is what I was thinking. My guess is that the 17" won't be going-retina. And I think that if they can't get a retina display into the 17" model, Apple will either just keep selling the October 2011 sandy bridge version, or they'll just discontinue the 17" model altogether.

if they can't get a 17" retina, how are they going to do a 21-27" for the iMac?

Making lighter MBPs will likely boost 17" sales, since many people don't buy the 17" because it's rather heavy at 6.6 lbs.
If Apple could shave off at least 1.5 lbs from the 17", I'd move from the 15" to the 17".

I'm in a big predicament here. I recently got a refurb 15" MBP, but now I'm debating if to keep it or return and wait for the redesign. I'm thinking I could get a new gen 13" with my budget. I could also get the same refurb for less money when the new model comes out? Just how much do you guys the current model will drop then?

Decision, decisions...

Return it and wait till WWDC - June 11-15.

Don't know. We are not even 100% sure that the new MBPs will come during WWDC.

A retina 27-inch iMac would require a graphics card capable of displaying resolutions up to 5120x2880. These graphics cards do not exist yet, so I suspect we'll have to wait a little more (a year perhaps) before we see retina iMacs.

And lots of people don't buy the 17-inch MacBook Pro because it is insanely expensive at US$ 2,500! Drop the price and there will be a boost in sales.

Hey guys,
What do you think the chances are that apple removes firewire? I have a few things that I'd prefer not to buy adapters for. (Assuming SOMEONE comes out with a firewire 800 - thunderbolt adapter)

I knew someone would smart off and say that but when you do photo, web, graphics, and video freelance for a living and volunteer at a church doing media it is my top worry thank you very much!!!

If your doing this for a living a few freelance jobs should buy you a 13" easily. When I started out in design I bought the cheapest used macbook that would run photoshop and saved the rest. Too many freelancers go mad spending on equipment they don't need.

When you got enough jobs coming through that an older macbook would be costing you money for being too slow thats when you buy the latest and greatest.

Right now you can pick up the 13" late 2011 used almost half price, that would do everything you want and stop you from being in debt.

Not trying ti be patronising just some friendly advice for a fellow creative.
