I noticed that the Apple Store is not featuring MBP as a new product. This makes me think that they know that this update is just a minor update and not a new product. Makes me happy to see that cos I can live for another 6 months with my early 2008 MBP.

I just refuse to buy a computer that will be redesigned in a couple months again.

Well...it IS a silent spec bump with only a -5 to 10% boost in performance.
-5 to 0% if you overclock your GPU, 8-10% if you leave everything alone

I've got a 2007 MacBook (I know, I know...) and have been waiting for a MBP refresh forever! But I would love to have the redesigned version. Do you guys think it's worth it to wait until Ivy Bridge? My MacBook is pretty much on its last life.. which sucks when my life basically runs on Adobe CS5. (And if I get a new MBP I probably won't buy another computer for another 2-3 years.)
maybe a cheap alternative in the mean time?

whats the point in taking out the ODD if you dont use it dont use it then take out the ODD whats the diffence between the macbook pro ant the air the macbook pro its the beast of the macbook family it has all the bells and whistles people still use dvd / cds

One thing is for sure: the MBP 13" needs to lose the optical drive and the hard-drive, so it can pack up enough muscle to differentiate itself away from the MBA 13". As it stands, there's hardly any reason to go for the MBP 13" instead of the MBA 13" considering it has worse resolution, worse GPU, it's less portable and it runs hotter, and it doesn't really have a meaningful performance edge.

I'd love to see the MBP 13" becoming "Pro" for real in terms of performance. There's nothing "Pro" about 1280x800 and integrated GPU.

Wrong. Even though the MBA has a higher resolution you are barely able to tell the difference in OS X between the two. I can adjust google chrome so that just as much text is displayed as on the MBA and you would only be able to tell the difference if you hold a magnifying glass against the screen. You also need to consider the color gamut of the two. They are not the same either. Most consider the colors on the MBP13 to be better than on the MBA13

I don't see how the MBA13 has the better GPU. They are exactly the same. EXACTLY. But the MBP13 has a substantially faster CPU. It was already substantially faster early 2011 and it has only become faster late 2011.

The third point is that the mbp13 still has an ethernet port. The mba does not.

And last you can fit a 2nd harddrive in the MBP13 which you can not in the MBA13. That was the dealbreaker for me. I am running a 256gb ssd with a 750gb hdd. And I have all my movies and music with me whenever I go. I recently did some traveling in asia and I can say that it would be very hard for me to give up that hdd space. People say the MBA13 is better for traveling. I say the MBP13 is better because you'll be bored to hell sitting in your hotel room, waiting for busses and trains unless you have every season of dexter in HD with you. No it can not be remedied with an external hdd

Ιs there any chance that we might see a higher screen resolution in the 15.6" model or is that not even possible?

I would like to see a 1920 x 1200 resolution on a 15" pro, but with an update to Lion to make it resolution independent.

i'm waiting for the 2012 refresh. I was supposed to get one for christmas, but mentioned to my parents that I wanted to wait for next years model instead.
I'm guessing they will come out between feb-april?

should've bought the macbook pro in february...wouldve stayed 'current' for a year and a half...
instead i pulled the trigger late 2011...

I agree. I am sure Apple would do something crafty to differentiate Pro 13" from Air 13". Losing the Optical Bay would allow for a few things (but with no change in physical thickness):

1) Larger/more battery, longer time away from power brick
2) More space for discrete GPU
3) High capacity HDD coupled with a fast 400MB/s SSD

or my personal favorite:

4) All of the above

:):D

Well the optical bay does differentiate it from the air. If you don't need an optical bay, maybe get an air. If you do, or if you use the port for a 2nd HD, get a MBP (notice you can actually do your option 3 there).

Also, the geekbench on the MBP 13 with the dual core 2.8 is 7049. The Air with the dual 1.8 is 5786. That isn't a huge difference, but it is ~20% higher. If you're going to put that CPU to much use, you'll certainly notice that over time. Also for the MBA 13 1.8 you're paying $1700. The MBP 13 2.8 is $1500.

Also, you can upgrade RAM and he HD in the MBP. That's kind of important for a lot of people, and also differentiates the two.

So maybe the MBP 13 isn't all that "Pro", but it is more Pro than the Air 13. That's for sure.

Actually I`m fine with the current design.

As for as changes , I would like to see the following:

256 SSD / standard on 15 & 17" models.

And I don`t have a problem with having an optical drive , however I do foresee it being a more or less redundant piece of hardware.

The main changes should be new processors and doing away with the spinning mass , also know as a hard drive. Very archaic IMHO !! :)

Later :D

I am still betting there will be no more air or pro. Just macbook 11', 13' and 15'. :D

I am betting that this won't be the case. I bet that there will be two very distinctly separate lines, as there is right now. How much do you want to put on it?

There would be a slight difference if the pixels were still big enough that you could see the border between the pixels. But overall, if that doubled the high resolution display, I would buy it in a heart beat.
