I just want a quad core 13 inch with SOME GPU

for the 13inch they should remove the optical drive and use that space for a faster GPU and more battery (you could put a ATI 7750m or nvidia gt 650m in there with the space left over) also remove firewire and put another USB port on (preferably USB 3.0). also a 1440x900 anti glare option would be nice. (I will settle for a 1280x800 anti glare)

do a similar thing for the 15inch, remove optical drive and increase the battery size and put in either a nvidia gt 655m or even gt 660m (or ATI 7850m). and another USB port (seriously does anyone still regularly use an optical drive), for the antiglare option have a choice between 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 option. (or maybe a super bright wide angle antiglare screen with only 1440x900 resolution to help with brightness and angle)

that optical drive has to go, there's no point for it to stay, we have mac app store and icloud already. get rid off the optical drive and keep the 13" under 1.8kg (4lb) would be perfect.

I'd be happy for the optical drive to be dropped though, on the 15" model at least, would be very disappointed if you couldn't install both an SSD and an HDD in the case at the same time.

With no optical drive on the 13", I want some GPU. If they make it thinner, they should also add a "sheet battery" that would make the battery life INSANE

give it a freakin rest, the refresh JUST happened this morning. Do we really need to start in on what is gonna happen for the next upgrade?

THERE WAS A REFRESH THIS MORNING?

I've been waiting for this. Can anyone shed information? i can't find any on the interwebs :(

Well the 15 and 17in are more likely to be used for video editing, so IMO dropping it form the 13in would be better. Then they can add more battery and a dedicated GPU, or even an integrated Cell card.

It would be really nice if they would refresh sooner than '12, so I don't have to wait so long! It's too bad in way, it seems that the next ones released are going to be the biggest changes since unibody, from reading these threads.

There are still rumors of a late-2011 mini-refresh with the new intel processors. But the difference will be pretty small compared to the current ones. Unless they decide to also drop the optical drive early, in which case they have a little more room to do some internal changes.

I'm waiting for the 2012 ivy bridge macbook pros myself. Unless you really can't wait another 6 months, so should you.

I'm like you, waiting for the MBP's with Ivy Bridge. But as time goes on and rumors say that a small refresh will happen soon with no Ivy, then Ivy MBP will only come in +1 year... because such upgrade as a redesign + Ivy Bridge will not come 6 months after the last refresh, at least it does not makes sense...

I too am waiting for the Ivy Bridge refresh to buy my very first Mac. My current Sony Vaio laptop is on his last breath after 4~5 years, and I want a portable and reliable machine.

It's going to be hard to hold on to this laptop until then. Its graphics card is faulty, its network card works only when it feels like it, and its left click trackpad button does not work anymore. Its performance is laughable at best. Add to that the fact it overheats like a madman and the electric shocks I get. It'll be 7~8 months of painful waiting. But I'll hold on to it.

The current Sandy Bridge IGP simply does not satisfy me enough. And I am also praying the SuperDrive goes down the drain (for either less weight, more battery, a small SSD, or a dGPU). Furthermore, I want USB 3.0 ports and a higher resolution (which is bound to happen sometime; even the 13'' MBAs have it). Those are the reasons that are making me wait for 2012.

i don't think thats the case here. the rumors you were reading are not about a refresh, just mere bto options, so you'll be able to purchase these new sandy bridge processors (2.4 and 2.5) as bto options, the same thing happened last year and thats not a refresh, just added bto options...

i also wait for the redesigned mbp without superdrive, and i think that redesign will happen in march/april of 2012 when ivy bridge becomes available, im 90 percent sure about it, but apple can always surprise us...

so the bottom line, if they add bto options in november the redesign will be in march/april timeframe, but theres another possibility, they could release a redesign with sandy bridge (2.4 and 2.5) in the following months but thats highly unlikely, they will most definitely wait for ivy bridge and then we'll get our keynote ;)

by redesign i mean the absence of superdrive, different design (probably macbook air style), instant on, ssd standard (those ssd blades), maybe an additional hdd, usb 3.0, radeon hd7000, and maybe ips (better screens) and longer battery life...

at the last mac keynote they sad that the macbook air is the future of notebooks, so im basing my expectations on that, and a couple of rumors about a 15 and 17 inch air-like macbook pro

Caught a glimpse of a pre production prototype right before the image & partial specs were taken down. It looks like Apple is finally getting close to their goal of truly thin & light 15" model.

It was listed at just 0.022mm thin & weighing just 0.42lb.

The only drawback is it's so flimsy it can't be touched without bending & destroying it.

But Wow... How Impressive. :)

Oh sorry, confused the exact meaning of refreshing. So when saying refresh people mean only a bump upgrade?

Also, what if Apple just launched a redesigned MPB line with SB in November in a way to attract a lot of new customers and then, in a way to avoid sales loss, they would launch, next year, the already redesign MBP with IB!
That could be a clever market strategy, since the majority of Apple customers (and you know its true) are mainly attracted to the design of Apple products than rather to the internal specs.

That would be a pretty good idea. I think folks with the SB version would be happy unless they are HW geeks like us. IB revision MBP is more likely to get the new AMD GPU - that is the biggest draw for me.

I'll also add that after using a MBA 11 for a 2-3 months, my 15" MBP feels like a TANK. It's crazy how heavy it feels to me now. The extra power is worth it for me, but if Apple could get all this into a 4 lb package...

Also, if the Carbon Fibre case rumour is true then the Aluminum case factory shutdown is a moot point.

Obvious troll is obvious.

well, thats certainly a possibility, but i dont think they can make an improvement in unibody design (make it thinner, tapered, macbook air like) with sandy bridge, not even if they get rid of odd, they need cooler chips, they need ivy bridge so they'll wait till it comes out, you know how current macbooks can get hot...

there is a couple of apple patents about different notebook cooling solutions, even water cooling, maybe we'll see revamped cooling also in the design... that would be exciting :)

and i dont think they are in rush to unveil new mbp given the growth in mac sales and the fact that macbook pros basically dont have competition, they are the class for itself...

i think they'll wait for ivy bridge with redesign, the only thing i hope for is that apple can get those ivy bridges early so new mbp comes out in march, that would be perfect

The 7750M might be this: 750MHz/12SIMDs/768ALUs/48TMUs/16ROPs/128bit GDDR5 4.0Gbps 64GB/s/1GB/50W TDP

768ALUs vs 480. Wow. Faster clocks too (will probably be brought down to 600). That should put it close to a desktop 5770.

Catalyst 11.11 driver leak references the new Mobility parts:

and this post form last December looks pretty accurate now:

'Going down, there's "Chelsea" itself, with its 128-bit GDDR5 memory interface, 1-2 GB memory, 20-30W TDP, performance 30% higher than "Whistler", production starting in Q4-2011'

I'm hoping they can stick a 78xx in the high end 15 and 17.

I kind of wouldn't be surprised to see them drop the 13" entirely. I say this as a person that loves the 13" MBP and isn't really interested in the Air.

I don't know... They had three 13" computers selling simultaneously for a number of years. So I think the Pro and the Air will exist alongside each other for at least a few more years.

I feel like that was a transitional period, but who knows.

The original 13" Air was hampered by the technological possibilities when it was first introduced. You couldn't get nearly the same power out of the mobile chips at the time, nor the SSDs that were noticably faster than HDDs.

They drop the Macbook, it is replaced by an 11" Air.

13" Air comes into it's own where it rivals/beats the 13" MBP at most things, both benchmark wise and general user experience. This kind of makes the MBP irrelevant to the vast majority of people buying the 13" Macs who probably just browse the internet and edit a few college photos.

Yet the 13'' MBP it's Apple best-selling laptop. Apple's not dropping it anytime soon. The MBA beats the MBP is portability, screen resolution, and write/read speeds; however, the MBP has other things going for it.

The MBP is not simply a MBA with a SuperDrive. It has more ports, more battery life, better processors (MBA's processors are Ultra-Low Voltage, as opposed to MBP's Low Voltage), better screen quality (despite the lower resolution), more storage space, and upgradeable RAM and HDD (either to a bigger HDD or a SSD).

Not to mention that, if you put a SSD on the Optibay Slot, the MBP's man disadvantage quickly fades, for an overall similar price. And meanwhile, it still retains its HDD space, which make it reliable for everyone who only want one computer and don't want to drag all their external HDDs around.

Finally, some people want laptops with processing power for a reasonable price. The MBA's laughable processor-wise, and the MBP 15'' is not really competitive on its price. The 13'' MBP is the only Mac laptop that fits both these requirements.

I hope it will be 2012 so I can save up the money :D but i do think if they make it a lot lighter and everything what would be the point of the 13" MBA?
