I really do believe that Apple needs to step up their game on the 13" since I just read up on the new Asus Zenbook, upgraded screen, small ssd for os, dedicated gpu and other goodies like 3x usb ports and being in the "ultrabook" form factor.

Apple must include some goodies in the 13" otherwise they can just drop the "Pro" imho :/

You can always install OS X onto any Intel-based computer quite easily, actually.

theres a rumour that the new Macbooks wont gain too much processing power over current models, so I guess Apple needs to redesign the MBP so that consumers will choose the newer models

wet blanky time. I don't think there will be any new mbp announcement next Monday. the most I can see is someone asking about it and apple saying something incredibley frustrating like, we have something very exciting for the new mbp sometime this year.

Very unlikely they wont announce the new MBPs.

These acer windows 8 touchscreen notebooks look decent...
Hope my MacBook pro wait is worth it

I would be utterly and completely shocked if by the close of WWDC they were neither announced nor released (probably both). I could see it being announced during the keynote or a silent release during WWDC. Possibly even being released this week ahead of WWDC.

Worst case scenario, they announce them at WWDC but claim they won't release them till ML comes out. But I don't think that's very likely. The would just release now and give them all free updates to ML before they would do that.

In that case I guess Bloomberg and the WSJ would have some people to fire for putting their reputation on the line.

Yeah I don't know why people are questioning the integrity of Bloomberg and moaning that it isn't going to happen because we haven't seen any leaks of the Pro yet. A report from Bloomberg and WSJ stating it will be released at WWDC is infinitely even more credible than a leaked pictures, even more credible than the leaked pictures we have seen of the 'iPhone 5'.

There is no way Bloomberg would report that the new Mac will lose the ODD, be slimmer, have flash storage and be launched at WWDC unless they were 99% confident. News outlets aren't rumour sites; they aren't willing to sacrifice their reputation over a tinpot source in China claiming he knows it all about Apple. It was most probably a controlled leak from Apple to keep people on edge to stop wavering buyers jumping straight to a Window's manufacturer who already have their next generation (Ivy Bridge) laptops already out.

Mountain Lion has HiDPI capabilities built in, a feature which has been discovered by beta users, not announced in Apple's Mountain Lion change logs, my reason why? Because they're waiting for WWDC to launch their retina display Macbook Pro to showcase this HiDPI feature at WWDC.

My prediction;
1) Macbook Pros and iMacs launched at WWDC which will be available immediately with a free upgrade program to Mountain Lion. MBP and MBA line will /not/ merge.

2) Macbook Air will not be announced at WWDC. This will be the same as the 2011 Air. The Air will now become the flagship product Apple use to ship their new OSX version on.

Exactly, especially since we know (according to John Martello, former Senior Marketing Manager at Apple), that Apple does indeed use controlled leaks from time to time, and when they do, they contact well established traditional media outlets, not rumor sites like 9to5Mac.

The Bloomberg article sounds very much like a controlled leak to me. iPhone 5 photos, OTOH, could be complete fakes, especially considering that there are protector case manufacturers and rumor sites that will pay actual money for those photos and parts. There's a huge incentive to fabricate them.

I don't have actual links with me but I do believe that these controlled leaks are sometimes false claims from the sites as well. I remember that one of those "confirmed" controlled leaks on NYT turned out to be fake few years ago but I'm not really sure.

This speculations and forums like these are what makes the sales go crazy on launch day, believe it or not but hyping (or even dissing) is very powerful marketing tool.

For me, the Retina display isn't such a sure thing, at least not on basic 13" model that might stay the same to have the price tag untouched, or maybe they'll put 13" MBAir instead of the entry level Pro - it could get the price tag of the old 13" Pro. I believe this would satisfy a lot of people.

15" and 17" is where the upgrades are going to happen most likely. BUT I really wouldn't be surprised if the unibody design remained the same - for the sake of heating issues, bigger battery etc. Plus it proved to be very, very strong. I haven't heard any issues with Unibody designs - at least not issues that were present on pre-Unibody Pro's (which are quality too, don't get me wrong).

At least they could give more than 4GB Ram on 15" models... it always seemed really silly they offer only 4 gigs at that price point. They even offer 6 gigs on Mac Pro!

This is a very good post, nice read. I totally forgot about the Bloomberg thing. That does make it a lot more plausible.

See here for seemingly some solid rumours at long last, with most detail on macbook pro redesign...

"Anonymous insiders, supposedly close to a few of Apple suppliers, added that the new MacBook Pro is in the testing stage. This could mean a possible summer launch for the device."

Summer release? No thanks...

Edit: Unless it's summer now :p

I've only read the first 2 paragraphs so far but I am having feelings we may be saying goodbye to the 13" MBP. Seeing as it lacks the specs to be a professional machine, plus Apple would surely want regular consumers moving to the Air, also there is not much difference between the 13" MBP/Air now this this link, it is making more and more sense.

Assuming we see a 13" Pro and 13" Air updated at the same time both with retina displays, then that would be a hard decision for me to choose between!
You and I will be in the same situation! Retina is really all I wanted from the update, and if both get it....I will have a tough time! However....the 9to5 Mac post doesnt mention a 13 inch MacBook pro...

Agreed. Either the 13" MBP needs to get some serious specs to differentiate it from the 13" Air (longer battery life? dedicated GPU?) or it will go away.
