Does Apple check up on this at all? I just graduated so I'm not a student anymore. Does it matter if I select my old university or put home school if they do not check up?

Just trying to save some $$$. Thanks in advance

For what it's worth, I went through the Education Store and have already been charged for AppleCare. I realize the discount is just on the MacBook, but I presume that they wouldn't've gone ahead and processed AppleCare if there was something unusual.

...I have also learned that you ought to always keep your student ID on you if your university doesn't seem to update their IDs often. ;)

Just a heads up - bhphoto has a 128GB Professional 133x SDXC Card from Lexar for $89.99 right now. A few people put reviews on the site saying that they have used it as extra storage in their MBP and Mac Air and they work well. I went for it. We'll see how it goes.

Does anyone know about the sata controller in the refreshed MBP 13", just forward thinking to when I install a SSD re the speed, I'm assuming its the same one as the Oct 11 addition?

I know it's not going to do my reputation any good, but another user on the Chans posted the link saying it was a leaked product. I entered it thinking it was a joke and it led to a half-developed page. That's why I refreshed it - as I thought it hadn't loaded properly. I now see it's more likely that it wasn't meant to exist yet.

Hate to accuse you of trolling, but I promise whatever you saw (if anything) is not a leaked Apple television. Do you honestly think that there are Apple web designers who have their hands on photos and specs of a product for which not a single detail has made it's way into the public eye? And the fact that you so "subtly" describe what you saw as an "iMac-like device, no bezel, like cinema display merged with mac mini/ apple TV." Was "I saw the Apple television" too obvious? Come on :)

Are the specs on the lower-end MacBook Pro good for gaming?

Depends on what you mean 'good for gaming' :) If you get the 15" with the video card, it should run any current game pretty well and most likely any game that comes out in the next 1-2 years. If you get one of the 13" without a video card, it should be able to play most games but longevity may not be as good.

The AC spec isn't be finalized and won't until 2013. The current ac routers etc. are based on draft spec and there is no guarantee of compatibility. Apple was a early adopter of N and likely will be of AC as well. However it was not included in the new Airport so it likely isn't close to prime time per Apple's standards.
I personally wouldn't put any money on the WiFi association ratifying AC anytime soon, especially considering how long it took them to finalize N after thousands were already using the draft-N spec.
Anand doesn't even list what settings he uses to get that 20fps (which is barely playable as is). Furthermore, Diablo 3 on the whole requires very little graphics power to run as it was designed to run on a wide swath of equipment.
20fps is good enough for Diablo. Why? Read below:
The second thing to bring up is the design of the game itself. In a first person shooter, your input is generally linked to the frame rate of the game. If the frame rate drops below 30 FPS, things can get choppy, and many even consider 60 FPS to be the minimum desired frame rate. Other types of games may not be so demanding—strategy games like Civilization V and the Total War series for instance can be played even with frame rates in the teens. One of the reasons for that is that in those two titles, mouse updates happen at the screen refresh rate (typically 60 FPS), so you don’t feel like the mouse cursor is constantly lagging behind your input. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend <20 FPS as enjoyable for such games, but it can be tolerable. Diablo III takes a similar approach, and as a game played from a top-down isometric viewpoint, 30 FPS certainly isn’t required; I have personally played through entire sections at frame rates in the low to mid teens (in the course of testing for this article), so it can be done. Is it enjoyable, though? That’s a different matter; I’d say 30 FPS is still the desirable minimum, and 20 FPS is the bare minimum you need in order to not feel like the game is laggy. Certain parts of the game (e.g. interacting with your inventory) also feel substantially worse at lower frame rates.
Yes - the screen sounds incredible. Too bad is isn't paired with about 3x the graphics card to make the entire package sound incredible. Which goes back to what I said earlier - a 1920x1200 IPS screen would be better given the power levels of this machine. As is - the statements others made earlier about this Macbook being quickly outdated hold true...
Without someone creating and pushing demand for very high resolution screens, we'd still be stuck at 1080p/1200v max on laptops by 2015.

Why is this MBP being obsolete now such a big deal? A car loses value the very second it is driven off the dealership's lot. You can spec a super custom high end PC now and it's obsolete in less than 24 hours. There is nothing on the new MBP that makes it depreciate faster than its older iterations.

A large installed base of the higher-res screens will force developers to ensure resolution independence in their apps and systems. Right now it is impossible to use even Windows 8's Consumer/Release Preview builds at the native 2880x1800, and the Metro UI (which is supposedly designed to be resolution independent) looks very undersized and underutilized.

It would be the one with Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory.

Is there also a massive difference between the HDD at 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm?

Just ordered my 15'' MBP Retina.

The only "problem" = 1 month delivery time.:(:(:(

A great deal = 10% coupon to spend on the shop :D:D (basically this means I bought it with 10% discount, since this is the only shop I use to buy all my IT, Photo, Cell-Phone, DVD, Books, etc)

Someone asked this earlier, but no one answered it...

Do you guys think these new RMBPs will have long life spans?

I am currently typing on base model white macbook from early 2008. Even though I use my computer for ~4-5 hours/day, the computer has worked almost flawlessly for the 4+ years I've owned it. I plan on upgrading sometime this week, however, to the base model RMBP

I recognize that this is a new model/technology, so they have not had time to sort out any kinks in the technology.

I also understand that we have no way to really know how long this RMBP will last - it just came out yesterday! - but, based on previous Apple computers (ones that you guys have owned, etc.), do you think I can get ~4 years of almost flawless computing out of a new RMBP?

Do you think apple will release a 17" retina air/pro when they update the iMac and Mac pro next year?

You should. MBPs do last a long time ^_^ :)

Here goes what I think.

I think if you buy an RMBP , you will have a machine for 4 years of joy. The disk is more than enough on a world each time more based on the cloud concept. You no longer have the need to record large amount of data on your HD.

Just on a personal note I personally do not think we will see retina displays on the 13'' at least until next year. And why ? Because of battery issues. Did you noticed the huge amount of space ocuppied by the battery on the RMBP ?

I think that if Apple had a solution for the 13'' retina, they would for sure present it this week.

The fact is that battery is still problem to solve because on a 13'' it will be more dificult to put extra ventilation power.

Will retina displays tend to appear next year ? Yes! But Apple has shown once again that they are miles ahead of competition.

Do you see anything even near this wonderfull peace of engineer on other brands ? No !

The 17'' is gone (unfortunatelly). It wasn't even part of this spec bump.

I think I shot myself in the foot. I decided to not order online so I could just pick it up in store. Now I've decided to get 16 GB of RAM so I have to order online.

So when 2x16GB sticks are out there; I could upgrade my MBP to 32GB RAM, put 2x512GB in my MBP and it will have more RAM/SSD than the retina Macbook Pro.

Thoughts?

What am I missing here?

Good graphics card
High resolution display
Portability
2nd hand value

2.6 v 2.7 ghz

Im thinking of getting the new mbp. Is the $250 worth the 2.7 ghz model vs the 2.6? can it really be that much of a performance increase or is it just "King Dick Syndrome'?

Isn't $2,200 enough?

Some Americans are living in tents. Why don't you ask one of those folks whether you need to spend three grand on a laptop.

so, i and a couple of others have asked the following question:

what speed is the sata connections in the hdd/sdd bay and optical bay for the new old school non retina display 15" model? sata2 or sata3?

it would be nice if someone actually attempted to even acknowledge the question....

you guys keep asking the exact same questions and getting the exact same answers over and over again on every page over simple crap that if you just took the time to watch the keynote or read one blog, you could answer your own dang questions.

so how about we try to answer one that has an answer that is not opinion based, and not easily accessible....

thank you
