let's see if they can be the first to remove the CD drive too. I can see Blu-ray ever making its way into Macs though.[/QUOTE]

I really hope they keep some sort of optical drive in the 17" MBP. I use mine constantly for Pro Tools and when I travel I watch films with headphones.

I would have my money on there being no USB3 support. but like you say they have done stranger things. It's a shame thunderbolt isn't in more widespread use.
Apple would have to integrate a USB2 controller into the motherboard to bypass the already integrated USB3 controller. This make no economical sense whatsoever. USB3 will be there with Ivy Bridge.

its not needed... the USB2 controller is already in the southbridge, intel just made available I think 4 USB3 channels

I've been waiting on getting my first Macbook Pro till I see what the update is. Say I wait for the new model announcement and don't like what I see. Do you think I would still be able to get the current model at the Apple online store or does it change right away? I want the top end 15" high res glossy and I have yet to see one of those in the Apple refurb store. I'm just curious how fast these usually update on the site when new products announce.

Thanks.

It might not be possible to buy the old model from the Apple store after the new one is launched. You can usually buy them elsewhere, but then it can be difficult to get your preferred configuration.

I would just love some rumors or suggestions on waiting for a new 13 inch model... seems all I keep seeing is the 15 inch hybrid coming :(

I'm more and more convinced that the 13'' pro will go away. I don't think there is room for a thinner 13'' Pro.

Those looking forward to a 13'' quad core might be disappointed. Not sure if this was ever a realistic option anyways. The blade SSD in the Air is user upgradable, so the remaining issue is RAM - hopefully Apple bumps it to 8 GB at least.

I can't find any rumors regading the 13" or 17" MBP? :S

I suppose we'll soon see soon enough.

I couldn't find any on the 13inch either so I decided to buy it now instead of waiting for 2months. I personally only use it for making music, burning cd's, surfing internet. So because I need the optical drive I decides to go with it instead of waiting for a new computer that's going to get rid of a feature I need. Although the 13 in air looked pretty tempting with its display and SSD.

i can see them still going USB2 only, sadly. i would love to see USB3 blue on the new MBP!:)

Sadly, I think they are pretty quick at removing them from the Store, both 'off' and online. Usually the online Apple Store closes when a big announcement it's about the be made and re-opens right away after the introduction of X product with last generation of said product disappearing right away.

I also want to get a 13'' MacBook Pro but I don't know as of yet weather to wait for the upgrade or not and at the same time I'm also worry that if I don't like the new model (if they ever redesign it) I won't be able to buy the previous one directly from Apple.

The new pros need to have upgradeable RAM, a discrete gpu that is at least the next gen equivalent of the current ones, and USB 3.0 portS. Emphasis on the plural.

A thinner design and hidpi display would be welcome bonuses.

I see your point me too looking to replace my MBP 17" mid 2010 with the new one and wish they keep the optical drive or JUST try to copy to USB drive,

I think that either the 13" and 15" Pro models as we know them today go away completely in favor of the 13" Air and a new 15" sibling, or we'll see a major redesign to the Pro line that isn't quite as cut down as the air.

I'm picturing 13" and 15" Pro models that drop the optical drive and are slightly thinner than the current models with a slight taper, but not as thin as the Air models. IPS displays, longer battery life, SSDs, and midrange discrete GPUs.

Instead of the 13" Pro being an entry level machine, it would be bumped up to being a higher end ultraportable, closer to the Vaio Z line. Probably a bump in price too.

Basically the 13" Pro either needs to move up the line a ways or go away.

Edit: Here's a very rough mockup of my idea:

Imagine that but with a bit of a taper, not as much as the Air. Maybe just thick enough at the back to fit an Ethernet port exactly opposite the Magsafe.

Either way, I predict that the glass screens will be gone. Not only is the super glossy display somewhat controversial, the glass is also heavy and adds thickness. There may still be glossy/matte options, but without the glass like the Macbook Air displays.

Sounds like the new iPad doesn't actually have a 70% better battery, just a 70% bigger one, so that lessens the chances of a better battery being in the new MBP.

I'm caught in-between laptops, and I'm going Mac this time. I'd love to just go get a current MBP, but I'd kick myself if they came along with a new gorgeous "retina" (gosh I hate that marketing term) display, or a gigantic new trackpad, or something of the type.

The hires 15" and 17" displays are pretty close to retina at the distance you typically use them at.

I've got the 15" and the only complaints I have are heat and fan noise - however I don't think those problems are going to go away any time soon, it's simply a LOT of processing power in a small box and something has to give.

They're close, but you would have to sit at a viewing-distance of about 27" for the 15" hi-res MBP to cross the 1 arcminute "Retina" threshold (which appears to be Apple's definition). The figure for the 17" MBP is about 26".

I can imagine that some people do sit at those distances, but using a notebook (with the keyboard proximal to the screen) I tend to be - very roughly - 23" from the screen. At this distance, to qualify as Retina, you need a PPI of 150. This would mean a 15" Retina MBP would need a WUXGA (1920x1200) display, and a 17" Retina MBP would need a WQXGA (2560x1600) display. This is assuming staying with 16:10 and standard resolutions.

I have a 13" pro, and a 17" (matte) pro (both 2011). I take the DVDs out as I don't use them.

Now, there's really nothing they could do to the 17". I think these will remain the same.

The 13" I like fine, even though it would be nice to have a matte option (But I sort of like the glass). They could also reduce the weight, but that would be at the expense of rigidity (it's a brick). It also would look pretty much like an Air, except perhaps upgradable (which is great). Whatever they do, it's going to eat into Air sales or vice versa.

The 15" is the model that probably could benefit most from a redesign, with a reduction in weight and bulk, as there's not an Air counterpart. It would essentially be a Pro/Air hybrid. They would sell like HOT cakes :D

This is exciting news. I can now sanely wait out the month or two for a redesigned mbp.

Ethernet

The physical Ethernet port is very large. Have we considered Apple including the circuitry for Ethernet on the motherboard, but having an included dongle? (Or, knowing Apple, a $29 dongle.) You know, like the pre-DisplayPort dongles for VGA/DVI?

They already have a USB dongle for the MBA. If they try to make the Pro thinner, they will probably just use that.

The USB dongle only does 100Mbit ethernet. Plus USB is a CPU hog. It'd be a huge downgrade if this is what happens with the new models.
