I really want to buy a Macbook Pro now... but I know I'll be gutted when the new ones get released but there's always something newer around the corner.

What shall I do?

Do what I'm doing and wait unless you really need one. My laptop is on its way out but it will last me long enough until the new release is out in 6-8 weeks. Then I can decide if I like the new one and if not hopefully get a reduced price on the latest one.
If you don't have a computer and need one straight away then go for it and buy the latest one.

I think Apple has done studies that say this isn't practical and Steve Jobs has publicly said as much. It's much too tedious to reach across a keyboard for long periods of time. Clearly Intel is banking on Windows 8 Metro to sell this. I doubt this concept will take off even with the help of MS's new OS.

But what the hell do I know? I'm old enough to remember when bottled water arrived and confidently predicted it too would be a passing fad. :)

lol I thought bottle water was alwyas around

If you see the clip of the demo touchscreen laptop it isn't bad at all. It's not as if you'll be using it as the Only option to scroll or tap but as another option.

With designs like the Asus Slider and Sonys slider I can see it doing very well actually, especially if those designs get more money into them.
I would really like it if such a design was apple-adised :p

Hmm. Considering that Ivy Bridge won't be this crazy evolutionary update, maybe a redesign might be in 2013 when Haswell is released.

True, I'm just thinking on buying a MBP now and enjoying it. But I can't pull the trigger as I know I would be gutted if Ivy Bridge MBPs get released next month.

Once the 2012 models are out, everyone will move on and talk about the 2013 models. Once the 2013 models are out, everyone will talk about the 2014 models. It's quite annoying.

It's just the wait that is killing me. I'm half tempted to just suck it up and get a late 2011 model with the antiglare screen (which i really need). If somehow the new ones are amazing then I can sell at a refurb price along with my current 2009 MBP.

I could just really use the speed and graphics performance now, as the c2d doesn't cut it and makes graphics rendering a pain

I have a Early-2011 refurb (2.2 AG) sitting on my desk right now...the only thing Ill really be mad at is if USB3.0 is on the new ones, but it seems usb2 is fast enough for transfers I guess. Contemplating what to do with this nice machine myself!

That all said...if you need it, BUY IT. These boxes are very capable, and are not going to be eclipsed much by new updates.

Buy a used/refurb or wait for the 2012, no use paying retail for a machine that's 3 months or less of being dated.

Nah. The thing is that the 2012 model will be a complete redesign. So, the redesign is absolutely distinguishable from the last X years of MacBook Pros. But - and that is the important part - it is not as easy to distinguish from the other, afterwards coming releases which may have improved CPUs, GPUs, et cetera.

So, if you're looking at the specs: yes, there will be no significant changes in the future when you compare the models of 2012 with 2013 or 2013 with 2014. But there is a huge difference between the pre-redesign and the post-redesign models. Because it looks different. Newer. More worthy.

And this is also important if you're planning to sell it within the next years - the old models will loose more value than the redesigned models.

I think you're wrong. Apple don't redesign for the sake of it. There's always a good reason behind new designs. In the case of the upcoming 2012 models, this reason may be portability, leading to a thinner chassis.

For example: they redesigned the original iPad with the iPad 2 because they could make it thinner and not sacrifice any specs. However, the 3rd gen iPad is almost identical to the previous one, even though they could have differentiated it with a new design, but it's simply not their style.

To me, their current design breathes perfection. It's even better than that of the Air. I hope 2012 MBPs will stay the same. We'll see.

I also think the 2012 redesign will not be that different from the current generation as it is quite good already. I think we'll be looking at a thiner MBP, not as thin as the Air line for obvious reasons but still lighter than the current Pro line.

What about the graphics guys ?
The only interesting thing I found was
http://www.techpowerup.com/158620/AMD-to-Release-28-nm-Mobile-GPUs-in-Q2.html

The CPUs will be about 20% at most better than late 2011 models.
I don't care too much about the redesign, I want retina displays.
If GPU is also about 25% better at most and no retina I will just buy a 2011 refurb and keep it untill the 2013 update comes with retina and almost guaranteed redesign.

I am no gamer, but I do want to play Assassin's Creed III when it comes this fall and I refuse to pay more than 900$ for a PC with decent specs since I hate gaming consoles.

Is the processor after Ivy Bridge (Haswell or whatever it is called) a significant upgrade a la C2D - SB ?

Honestly, I wish there were more indications of a redesign this year.

Last year there were even more redesign rumors flying around, and people were just as confident that it would happen. And we all know how that turned out.

I don't mind the Apple dog and pony show for IOS toys and phones, but I wish they were a bit more forthright about upcoming mac changes. It's kind of a big deal to some people.

Sounds like it but I don't understand all that and most of that is not confirmed yet.

Redesign or not, I hope Apple increases the screen resolution and remove the glossy and anti-glare. Make them more MBA like.

I sure hope you're wrong. If you want it to be Air-like, buy an Air. Don't mess with the Pro line. Also, remove the glossy and anti-glare? So what, you don't want a screen? What else is there?

The glossy has the deeper colors and the bad reflection. The AG doesn't have the reflection but the colors aren't as deep. Apple could probably find the right balance of getting deep colors without having the reflection. I compared it to the Air because there isn't much else to compare it too.

Apple has always been a world-leader in bringing to the fore-front advanced technologies before anyone else does, so it would only make sense if they bring the 24-hour laptop out this year preemptively.

I'd say recently it's more like they are sometimes a world leader in using new technologies. ;)

Yes they were first with the cd drive and removing the floppy. And they brought out Thunderbolt before anyone else. But they are completely dragging their heels with stuff like HDMI, USB 3.0 and Blu-Ray.

According to Gizmodo, 7770M would be the most likely choice to be included in the new model, which is a very light improvement comparing to 6770, both with 1GB GDDR5.
I think I will just get a refurb or even 2nd hand late 2011 MBP.
Performance wise, this upgrade seems to be too light in my opinion.

I'd be fine with a light performance upgrade. The main advantage of the 7770M is its 28 nm process (vs 40 nm in the 6770M): lower power consumption and heat.

I too would have no problem with incremental hardware upgrades.

What I wish we knew, was if this was going to be a redesign and if they were going to implement any game-changers.

I'm caught in-between laptops, and I'm going Mac this time. I'd love to just go get a current MBP, but I'd kick myself if they came along with a new gorgeous "retina" (gosh I hate that marketing term) display, or a gigantic new trackpad, or something of the type.

Hurry up Apple! :p

True true. Which Macbook Pro (or Air) did you purchase? How are you finding it? Will you be bothered about the 2012 MBP refresh if there is one or not? :p

I had the early '11 MBP that was a 15". I realized it was too small for me so I purchased the late '11 MBP 17". I'm loving it everyday. 3 USB drives was needed for my music production. Plus, I can't beat the bigger screen. I was literally only able to buy the 17" because I took my backpack into the store and had to see if it would fit. Call me crazy to purchase this based on that but that was my only constraint on owning the 17".

I'm not worried about a refresh. The world of technology moves so quickly that you will always be disappointed if you keep looking to the future. This thing works great and if and when I need another one I will check out what the future holds.

There's always the optibay route, but I find that knowing the slot for the optical drive is still there, rendered useless, is taking the beautiful original design and turning it into something it was never supposed to be in the first place... design by committee. If you can bear it though, good for you, you've made the right choice.

It does bother me that I can't put a disc in here if I really needed to and that there is also the slot that can't have anything put in it but the necessity of having a secondary HDD is much more important.

Increased screen resolution would be good, preferably at least 1920 pixels wide. However, if I can't buy one with a nonreflective screen, I won't buy one at all.

What are the chances we see USB3 this go around? I know Ivy Bridge supports it, but apple has done stranger things...Not like it competes with thunderbolt, you cant even use TB mostly.

Understood. Very wishful thinking on my part.

it's a nice idea. but will almost certainly never happen.

I would have my money on there being no USB3 support. but like you say they have done stranger things. It's a shame thunderbolt isn't in more widespread use.

let's see if they can be the first to remove the CD drive too. I can see Blu-ray ever making its way into Macs though.
