The fact that Digitimes keeps parroting it's own quote doesn't make it true or more likely. The "shortages" at stores aren't particularly short - at least one best buy in my area was out of stock for like two days, and then they were back in stock. As for Mountain Lion and HIDPI - it's far from unusual for hardware support to be put into an OS before the hardware is ready. If the hardware isn't ready before the next version of the OS is released, it's hardly a "waste of time" to have it -- it just means the hardware isn't ready yet. IMHO, retina displays on the Macbook Pro are at least another year off - although we might see one on a Macbook Air sooner.
Actually, the MBP design has held up very very well over the years. I don't see any particularly compelling reason it needs to be redesigned any time soon. It looks awesome just as it is, and a MBP is NOT an Macbook Air, thankfully. The features you say lots of people don't need anymore are still needed by lots of other people. I'm using my ethernet port right now -- and would be even *more* annoyed by Apple removing that than I would by them removing the optical drive -- which would annoy me quite a bit itself.
The Pro is a laptop and should remain a laptop -- the Air is a notebook. They're very different markets, and if you don't want the stuff in the Pro, then by all means get an Air, and *please* leave my Pro features alone, thank you - or make them better.
I'm fine with the idea of making the optical drive a build to order option with the option of adding an SSD in place of it, or an SSD in place of the hard drive (which I think is already there), but just because *you* don't want it doesn't mean Apple should just get rid of it.
