But why would Apple update the MBPs in June when they usually update the MBPs twice a year? Unless they update the MBPs in June and then March if Haswell comes out then.

If you look at the Buyer's Guide, the last time the MBP was updated in October (2008), which was also the unibody redesign update, the next update occurred in June of 09. And given Intel's recent delays with Ivy Bridge, do you really think Haswell is going to launch on schedule too? lol I have a feeling Haswell is not going to come out by then

I feel kind of puzzled when I see kids going around with their Macbook pros thinking they are some kind of big shots when I know for a fact most of them are only using their computer for the most basic tasks. It's so unnecessary.

They really should've saved their money or their parents should've just said no and bought them an Air or an equivalent pc.

Oh, and if gaming is a priority for you, don't buy a mac. Windows is a lot better for games.

I don't see why they would think they're a big shot having a Pro as a pose to an Air. I know if I was a kid I would be extremely happy having either. Plus, how would their parents save money buying them an Air when the standard Air is more expensive than the standard Pro?

What's bothering me is the lack of rumours. If the update was closer I would of thought there'd be more rumours though.

And yeah true, I know what you mean.

I do agree with you in some repesct. It's not even been 6 months since the last MBP update (October 24th) though that was a minor spec bump.

I guess we'll see in less than 10 days.

It doesn't make sense that Apple will release new Macbook Pros, Macbook Airs, Mac Minis, Mac Pro, an iPod Touch and maybe a Mac Pro in the second half of this year.

I wouldn't say Apple typically updates twice a year; I'd say it typically updates every 8 months. It just so happens that frequently they udpate before April, meaning 8 months later they are still in the same year :p

As for your last paragraph, I totally agree.

First of all, while Digitimes is a very flaky source, they have been rather adamant that new MacBooks are in production and that the 15" will be released first. Then only a few weeks later sites and many stores (about half the best buys in my home city) start running low or out of stock of the 15". While that may be a coincidence it's still been one of the best indicators for new launches. Pair that with the fact that lion has HiDPI mode built in which the closer it gets to the launch of Mountain Lion, the bigger waste of time it makes lion having it with no retina machines. And lastly if Apple waits to announce the MacBook pros until June, it sort of congests the summer months with product launches (MacBook Pro, Air, iMac, maybe Mac Pro). I could be wrong and it could be my inpatientness talking, but I think we will be seeing the 15" pro in the next few weeks.

The fact that Digitimes keeps parroting it's own quote doesn't make it true or more likely. The "shortages" at stores aren't particularly short - at least one best buy in my area was out of stock for like two days, and then they were back in stock. As for Mountain Lion and HIDPI - it's far from unusual for hardware support to be put into an OS before the hardware is ready. If the hardware isn't ready before the next version of the OS is released, it's hardly a "waste of time" to have it -- it just means the hardware isn't ready yet. IMHO, retina displays on the Macbook Pro are at least another year off - although we might see one on a Macbook Air sooner.

The current design of the MacBook Pros is good, but dated. A MacBook Pro already looks like a dinosaur when put against a MacBook Air. And the MacBook Pro has features which lots of people don't need anymore (or at least not as much as they needed back in 2008) - such as Ethernet connection and optical drive. And, while the MacBook Pro has a faster processor and a faster video card than the MacBook Air, its disk is much slower - you can't just compare the speed of HDDs and SSDs.

Actually, the MBP design has held up very very well over the years. I don't see any particularly compelling reason it needs to be redesigned any time soon. It looks awesome just as it is, and a MBP is NOT an Macbook Air, thankfully. The features you say lots of people don't need anymore are still needed by lots of other people. I'm using my ethernet port right now -- and would be even *more* annoyed by Apple removing that than I would by them removing the optical drive -- which would annoy me quite a bit itself.

The Pro is a laptop and should remain a laptop -- the Air is a notebook. They're very different markets, and if you don't want the stuff in the Pro, then by all means get an Air, and *please* leave my Pro features alone, thank you - or make them better.

I'm fine with the idea of making the optical drive a build to order option with the option of adding an SSD in place of it, or an SSD in place of the hard drive (which I think is already there), but just because *you* don't want it doesn't mean Apple should just get rid of it.

Indeed, I half agree that the Macbook Pro design has held up fantastically over the years, with it being the best designed laptop (excluding the Air given that's an ultra book).

However, with that HP laptop launching looking pretty similar, I think that's evidence that Apple need to be looking at a redesign either this cycle, or the next one. Apple are a hardware company which pride themselves on innovation and design, and HP's MBP-like laptop (while an imitation) is evidence that PC manufacturers are catching up with the unibody design. Apple need to redesign to stay ahead of the pack.

Plus thin, tapered laptops are flavour of the month right now thanks to clever marketing by Intel.

Elgiganten in sweden also have their Airs out of stock, theres plenty of 13" Pros though, and a few 15", no 17"s... Doesnt neccessarily mean much though.

What we do know for sure is that Intel is releasing their i7 chips in a few days. Why would Apple wait until June to release the mbps?

Good question, thing about Apple is they kinda display the sense of "We will release products when we are good and ready to release them" But yeah, everything indicates that Ivy Bridge is about to hit the market. A swedish computersite, a very big one (sweclockers.com) Just had a friday-panel said that they had ALOT of work in the coming days and that figuring out what it was about was roughly like adding 1+1, so obviously its about Ivy Bridge.

Obviously I do still hope, despite the WWDC chatter lately that we are about to see a a release of the next gen Mbp.

I don't think dwindling supplies of 11" MBAs means anything, but with 13" and 15" supplies dwindling, that may be more of a sign. Of course, once they restock in a day or two, we'll all heave a sigh of disappointment.
May be, one can only hope though. ;)

I mean, I think it's the question when they're going to be released. I mean, if they said they'd release them at WWDC (a possibility, I guess) then I'd be much happier with that then at-least I would know where I stand. But Apple never announce Mac-updates in advance. :p

I can tell you that in Portugal there is also a shortage of supply.

It is almost impossible to get a 17'' MBP in one of the principal shops (a chain which are the greatest buyers from Apple in Portugal, Spain and France).

I tried to order one and the person in charge of sales told me that they were getting extreme difficulty in getting stock from Apple

I agree, not knowing is worse than knowing you will have to wait 1.5 months or so. :)

If the refresh was going to be next week, surely there would be more rumors?

Not neccessarily. Apple seems good at keeping quiet. The rumors that have already arrived covers most of what can happen and "new" rumors would just be renewed old ones, so hard to tell old rumors from new rumors I think.

I read today that Apple will show off something awsome in 8 months, a french designer that has been working with apple said that, other than that he cant say anything due to secrecy, so Apple could just be on top of actually keeping it under lock and key.

they were talking about a boat for the Job's family I believe, already been de-bunked...

The majority of the rumors was hinting at a 15" MBP/MBA during April 2012, but so far nothing. :(

He completely misled people with that statement to gain some more attention on himself. He was designing Steve Jobs's yacht...

No, the majority of rumours was hinting to a release shortly after or with, Ivy Bridge's release, and the Ivy Bridge will be released in a few days so that means that "early" window is still wiiiiiide open.

I see. Well okay bad example then, but fact remains, Apple usually keeps things well under lock and key.
