Why are people assuming that Mountain Lion is being released at WWDC? It is in all likelihood not...Even if the Macbook Pro released at WWDC it would still most likely be before ML. ML probably won't come out til the end of July.

My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't be surprised if it's closer to mid August or even later.

Yeah, I agree that it won't be released at WWDC but it is very likely that they will at least give another preview of it at WWDC. That's what they did last year with Lion. It was unveiled at WWDC and they showed its new features (Lion Preview 4) but Apple didn't release it til July 20th. But I do think that the new MBP's will ship before and w/o ML

When Apple says something is coming out in "summer", it means late August. My guess would be MBPs by the end of April or early May. iMacs in June. MBAs and Mac Minis in late July or early August. Mac Pros? Who knows...

Oh, and iPhone 5 in October.

I hope you are right. ;) new MBP and iPhone 5 coming my way....

"Some say Apple could release a new line-up of MacBook Pro laptops as early as May, but many believe the advanced computers will be unveiled in June, just in time for the Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco."

Yeah, they are speculating just as much as we are, they know about as much/little as we do. Even the phrasing clearly reveals as much.

I hope before

I have a 5 year old Thinkpad which is praying for me to put it to sleep once and for all.
I really cant wait much longer.
I really hope that in the next 2 months the new macbooks pros will be release.
Let me raise this question. What if the next is only an upgrade and not a complete redesign ? I personally will go for a cheap laptop and buy a redesign macbook pro in the future. What do you think ?

The current MBPs are pretty good, and personally, I wouldn't want to go through data migration exercise more than once. I'd buy a Mac and let go of your purchase envy.

Today (literally) buying either a windows or a mac laptop is not the best time. With both Windows 8 and a supposed MBP specbump (and possible redesign) imminent, waiting as long as possible on either front is well warranted.

Seems unlikely

Seems unlikely that Apple will wait until WWDC to release the 15" MacBook pro. First of all, while Digitimes is a very flaky source, they have been rather adamant that new MacBooks are in production and that the 15" will be released first. Then only a few weeks later sites and many stores (about half the best buys in my home city) start running low or out of stock of the 15". While that may be a coincidence it's still been one of the best indicators for new launches. Pair that with the fact that lion has HiDPI mode built in which the closer it gets to the launch of Mountain Lion, the bigger waste of time it makes lion having it with no retina machines. And lastly if Apple waits to announce the MacBook pros until June, it sort of congests the summer months with product launches (MacBook Pro, Air, iMac, maybe Mac Pro). I could be wrong and it could be my inpatientness talking, but I think we will be seeing the 15" pro in the next few weeks.

well appple does often do 2 release per year so maybe a release in April with Ivy Bridge and the redesign in Sept/Oct

Absolutely. And that even more inclines me to believe we will see some form of release in the next few weeks. If they did June/Oct it would be too close together and I don't believe they would release much later than October.

Well I agree, it wouldn't make sense to release the MBPs mid-June.

On the other side of the coin; Well what's not to say they're moving to a Mac update schedule to once a year?

Sure, that could be true. But as my original post points out, it just seems everything is pointing to a late april/early may release. At least to me.:)

That's exactly my main concern.
Money wise is not such a big problem, you can get a $500 decent laptop to work with and then maybe resell it for $300.

but I do need to work urgently, and I can't wait more than 2 months.

This is really a huge dilema.

I'm actually not following you. If you're willing to do the data migration more than once and money is not a problem, then buy a MBP now. If the new one comes out with must have features, sell it and do the migration again.

If you're NOT willing to do the data migration more than once, then wait as long as possible and don't look back when it becomes D-Day to purchase and a new one hasn't come out yet. Today's computers are excellent and nothing is gained through buyer's remorse.

The more I think about it, the more I believe it'll be announced at an event, most likely WWDC :( . While Apple is focusing a lot more on its iOS lineup, they still need to push their mac lineup, especially now with the incoming wave of ultrabooks that will cut into their profits. Apple is also very strategic with all their product launches and announcement and will try to stay one step ahead of their ultrabook competitors.

If you remember back in February, right when Google's Eric Schmidt was taking the stage for his keynote address at Mobile World Conference to talk about Android, Apple sent out invitations for the "new" iPad event, completely diverting basically everyone's attention away from Schmidt and his talk about Android which I highly doubt was a coincidence.

While it's not the exact same situation, Apple could announce their new MBP around the release of the first wave of ultrabooks and completely steal the spotlight from them so that while these ultrabooks are about to hit the market, the media's attention, and therefore the general public's attention, would be focused on this newly designed MBP instead. This would most likely hurt the initial sales of these ultrabooks since people who like the ultrabook design will definitely hear about this new MBP and may opt for the that instead since it would be similar to an ultrabook in design (obviously thicker than the MBA but still similar) yet offer the power of a MBP.

That's just my take. The only problem with my theory, however, is that it conflicts with my strong wish and desire that Apple release the new MBP in the next couple of weeks so I sincerely hope that my theory is wrong :(

I totally agree.

Apple has to release a redesigned MacBook Pro this year (and perhaps a brand new MacBook Air too).

Intel has recently announced that over 100 ultrabooks are expected to be released this year, and all of them have just one target: Apple. Be assured that among these 100 ultrabooks there will be some pretty cool stuff. We will have ultrabooks with 15" screens and ultrabooks that turn into tablets. Everybody else wants to be as cool as Apple and wants to sell products as desirable as the ones sold by Apple, for a better price. Intel and Microsoft are pushing the ultrabook and tablet industries and there will be fierce competition to Apple products.

Apple, of course, is aware of all this. It has already released the new iPad, with a retina display that took everybody aback, and that is supposed to be a better choice than every other tablet which is released until the end of the year (or at least until Windows 8 is released). It has also announced OS X Mountain Lion to compete with Windows 8 (although I haven't seen any ultra-cool features in Mountain Lion so far).

I don't expect Apple to put its expensive line of MacBook Pros, which were last redesigned in 2008, to compete with the brand-new ultrabooks. The current design of the MacBook Pros is good, but dated. A MacBook Pro already looks like a dinosaur when put against a MacBook Air. And the MacBook Pro has features which lots of people don't need anymore (or at least not as much as they needed back in 2008) - such as Ethernet connection and optical drive. And, while the MacBook Pro has a faster processor and a faster video card than the MacBook Air, its disk is much slower - you can't just compare the speed of HDDs and SSDs.

Said that, I am quite sure Apple will release a redesigned line of MacBook Pros this year - and perhaps of MacBook Airs too. Maybe - just maybe - Apple releases a unified line of MacBooks. This, of course, would be contrary to the company's tradition of keeping two lines of laptop computers and would also need trade-offs: Apple won't be able to put a quad-core processor and a dedicated video card in an ultra-thin laptop like the Air, for instance. I also think these laptops will feature a retina display. But I don't think they will be released in April or May. If a redesigned MacBook Pro was to be released in April, there would be some sort of announcement by Apple. As much as Apple wants to push the iOs, it won't just release a silent update of the MacBook Pro. Apple will want a big media event, to show everybody how good its new product is - especially in these times when sales of Macs are slowing down. These laptops are likely to come out in June/July. And Mountain Lion (and perhaps a new iWork - it's about time!) will come out in July/August.

What I hope:
- They launch the 13.3" MBP the same day as the 15".
- They don't change the design, I think it's great as it is.
- They put a new processor in, whether it be a dual-core or a quad-core.
- They don't make the SSD the new standard.
- It's the same price as the current model (it probably won't be) - they should at least make it cheaper in the education store.
- It holds battery better.

So your saying they shouldn't do anything other than Ivy-Bridge? BORING!

-ssd as standard

im thinking the only part where they could 'squeeze' the buyers are if they put by default a SSD(ram they already do)
i am hoping they just leave a normal HD, but that would spoil: energy saving plans, quickstart(amazing in keynotes), noise

since the MBA got some ssd, i dont see the MBP not getting it...

I'm not buying the late-April release date. Here's why:

- It has only been 6 months since the last MBP update (average is 8, judging from the Buyer's Guide). While the Buyer's guide only takes in consideration average release dates and not current rumors, it's still worth taking into account.

- As far as I know, the only source that pointed out to a late-April release was Digitimes. Being parroted over and over doesn't make it any more credible; it just means Macrumors, Appleinsider and the sort really need the pageviews.

- With other manufacturers getting Ivy Bridge chipsets early (as opposed to Apple exclusively like it sometimes happens), I doubt Apple would be able to meet the MBP- emand right away. Specially when there are so many people holding out to buy an Ivy Bridge MBP, even justifying reports on low early-2012 Mac sales.

- There were rumors about difficulties in the dGPUs department. Apple might want to wait a bit before sending out a lackluster product (such as a base 15" MBP without a dGPU).

- If the redesign is to be a reality, Apple would even appreciate more time to test it out. Every redesign has engineering complications that aren't foreseen at first; testing out products is always fulcral, but even more so in this sitaution.

- I'm a pessimistic in general. :D I'm betting on late-May/early-June.

I do agree with you in some repesct. It's not even been 6 months since the last MBP update (October 24th) though that was a minor spec bump.

But why would Apple update the MBPs in June when they usually update the MBPs twice a year? Unless they update the MBPs in June and then March if Haswell comes out then.

I guess we'll see in less than 10 days.

It doesn't make sense that Apple will release new Macbook Pros, Macbook Airs, Mac Minis, Mac Pro, an iPod Touch and maybe a Mac Pro in the second half of this year.

"few" more days and people will start asking about Haswell LOL. Instead of "should i get a MBP now or wait for IBridge" we'll see "Haswell is only 9 months away, should i wait or upgrade now" ;-)

Do you guys think is possible the new MBP SSD BTO option would be a SSD blade ala Air? So we can have a SSD + HD like the iMac?

Hah, ain't that the truth.
