Oh I know that no-one can tell me when....

I just didnt know when the last one was. Last mac laptop i bought was in 2003 :D

Well right next to the forums tab is the Buyer's guide. While it doesn't tell you WHEN one is coming, it gives enough info to gather that one is probably near. That and the countless threads that have popped up with a very similar question.

Ultimately it comes down to this:

If you need it, buy it. If you don't, wait.

If only there was a way to figure that out...

I think for some people (myself included), we are such MacAddicts/Mac-A-Holics, that we have a tangible craving to feast on a new Mac, and we desperately want to have such a computer in our own hands immediately that we cannot wait...it is the kind of craving that makes our hearts race, our throats dry, and we foam at the mouth...

I know some of you can attest to what I am saying. And yes, I will admit, it is a clinical addiction or syndrome I am talking about here. MAC ADDICTION!

I bought my my current 15" MacBook Pro exactly 2 weeks and 2 days before the new Sandy Bridge models came out (I expected them not to be released until June). When the new models were introduced, I was 2 days past the return period and could not return/exchange mine for the newer models. So I have succumbed to the "not waiting" calamity, and hopefully learned a small lesson.

2012 Macbook Pro Redesign

A couple of quick questions for those that have been around a while.. Once the new models are introduced, how long before the average person can get one? and
2, Will the late 2011 models be marked down further? MacMall for instance has some deals now, but have they, in the past, marked them down further once a refresh was introduced? thanks in advance!

...

my white macbook died mid-march, and i've been waiting ever since. at this point I don't even care if it's just an Ivy Bridge update, just hurry up apple!!!!! :(

1. Usually immediately you can order it.
2. The late-2011 will be marked down more than currently. However, the early-2011 went UP in price over the weekend across the board. No idea why.

Are we assuming Apple will stick to the same price points?

In October 2008 when the unibody MacBooks were introduced the 13 inch cost £949, compared to the old white MacBook which cost £699! That's why Apple sold the base model white one for quite a while after the new ones were introduced. I hope they don't do the same again.

I'd be surprised if they changed price points. For the last few refreshes, the price points have been pretty much the same if I remember. While there's a potential redesign, I don't think it would be as drastic as the white MacBook to unibody MacBook was.

I think it's possible. There's no real reason anymore to try to push the 13" MBP to the cheap end. If you want a ~1200 ish 13" laptop Apple has the 13" Air.

For a while the 13" MBP was the "Entry Level" Apple notebook. Now the 11" and 13" Air are the "Entry Level" Apple notebooks.

I think this thread is going to last.....:D:D

Either Apple as managed to keep this secret better than ever or the real lack of rumors mirrors the fact that the launch of a new product will take more time than everyone thinks.

Rumors for the MBP aren't really that good though. I remember last year, there were all these rumors, and they ended up being people just making up stuff, because none of it actually happened.

It is really unlikely that the price points will change at all, and if they do -which they won't- it will be to cut a little bit the price, not to charge more for the new MBPs in my opinion.

I think the latter... Only looking at the days since the last update in October it seems likely that the refresh won't come before WWDC. However, I definitely wished it would come earlier :D

Really?

So the "entry level" 13" apple notebook currently costs $1300 (MBA)

and the "pro level" 13" apple notebook currently costs $1200 (MBP)

is that what you are saying??

Although I agree that if the MBP changes in a lot of the ways people are crying for (remove superdrive, give SSD, thinner form factor...) you will find a 13" MBP and MBA that are nearly identical prices with a nearly identical form factor... That's why I'm inclined to believe that Apple should Merge the two lines. That would help to eliminate cost too.

Being along time Apple user (some 27 years) I have some observations about the upcoming updates. I must admit upfront that my interest is spawned by a need for a replacement 13" MacBook Pro or Air. At least for now I am willing to wait to see what eventually emerges from the manufacturing halls of Apple.

As for the MacBook Air my sense is that is will be a mild refresh with:
1. Upgraded processor (Ivy Bridge) with the associated upgrade in graphics (HD 3000 to HD 4000)
2. USB 3 will replace USB 2
3. Improved battery capacity

I would be surprised to see any other changes -- but one never knows!

As for the MacBook Pro, I think the story is a little more interesting, but the picture is still cloudy at best.
1. Upgraded processor -- 13" will remain dual core, 15" will be a quad core.
2. Graphics in the 13" will be the upgraded HD 4000). The 15" graphics is harder to predict
3. Improved display -- higher def. (Something is going to happen here, but what?)
4. No OOD
5. Improved battery capacity
6. Will be thinner and slightly lighter

Both the Air and Pro will be industry leaders. The 17" will remain, but with not much discussion.

When will these arrive -- my guess is that this is not an easy answer for Apple. First they have to manufacture them. The late arrival of Ivy Bridge has created a real log jam. The 13" MBP's are extremely popular on college campuses. Additionally as soon as you announce arrival times, the current models become obsolete. So my guess is that they will announce the whole MBP line at the same time -- either at the end of May or at the latest -- at the WWDC -- with availability shortly there after. As for the "Airs" -- the announcement will come at the same time. Bottom line -- look for them in the first three weeks of June.

I agree with you. Besides we cannot ignore the fact that it makes absolutelly no sense to present to many products on one event.

Presenting new hardware together with new IOS and OSX makes no sense. It would be to much confunsing for the final consumer and for sure they would loose focus on the new OS lanches.

I have no doubt that they are preparing a super upgrade to their laptop line. But perhaps all the noveltys will take some more time to prepare.

The only scenario I could find reasonable was to present a new 15' MBP with retina display in order to able to show that specific novelty on WWDC.

Nevertheless I fully believe MB launches in September/October. I am sure we will start getting rumors in June/July.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I highly doubt Apple will wait that long after Ivy Bridge has launched to update their Macbook lines, especially the MBA since all these new ultrabooks, which are gunning for the MBA, are launching in June with Ivy Bridge and USB 3.0. Also, by October, majority of the MBP competitors will have had Ivy Bridge for 5 months.

The absolute latest I see them getting updated with Ivy Bridge is when ML is launched in the late summer (like the MBA and Lion last summer) but I highly suspect that they will be launched at WWDC.

Maybe Apple will have a pleasant surprise for us early tomorrow morning and steal all Samsungs Galaxy SIII thunder :)

I don't understand why so many people want a redesign. It's been 4 years since unibody and competitors still can't compete with Apple's design (they may be able to copy it...but not compete with it). Apple should simply take out the ODD, pop in some flash storage, upgrade the screen in some way, throw in Ivy Bridge and Kepler with better cooling somehow and ship 'er out. WTF are they going to do at WWDC anyways? "We're really excited to show you 25 new products today!"

The new Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, Mountain Lion, iOS 6, iMac.

An Ivy Bridge and a 650m --> here's my $2300 END OF STORY.
