Now I haven't been a F1 fan for long, and I thought the rule change was for Safety Cars, and that they already started from the grid after a red flag? I could be wrong though.

In the past, if a red flag was thrown in the first couple of laps due to a major accident involving multiple cars, the cars would line up on the grid for a standing re-start. Mind you, this was when the teams were allowed to have a backup car ready to go for a driver whose original car had been damaged could jump into.

Once the backup car was eliminated, I believe they went to a rolling re-start after red flags just as they do after Safety Car periods.

Your in for a treat. There was a delay though so make sure you set your DVR to run over by a good hour.

There was no delay on the airing here as the race started and finished on time according to the DirecTV listing.

It was a terrific race and it was nice to see the weather improved from the day before.

The battle for 5th place was really good to watch too toward the end.

It certainly was. And yet again Vettel is outpaced by his teammate.
Alonso kept Vettel behind him in an inferior car for several laps more than a lesser driver would have.
When watching live, the red flag lasted an hour. Fortunately the race more than made up for it.

I was also amazed at the two wheel hoppers where they went, briefly, airborne! Nice to see that no one was injured and they were able to keep going, for the most part. The slow motion replay shows how bad it is on the cars, and no doubt the drivers, with all the bending and flexing of the chassis.

.....really disappointed Rosberg was out before the finishing fight with Hamilton. I was looking forward to that. And while Hamilton gains points, it wouldn't have been nearly so easy if it hadn't have been for that.

And the airtime on two cars! I only just began watching F1 this year and I've realy been enjoying it quite a bit.

It wouldn't have been so easy for Rosberg if Hamilton hadn't had 2 DNFs. Hamilton is within 4 points of Rosberg while having 1 additional DNF. Overall Hamilton is still having a better season.

The airing on NBCSN was cut by an hour from the live showing on CNBC - it took an hour for the armco to be repaired after Kimi's shunt.

I don't like it when NBC moves the programming around... they can put the spandex shorts on another channel.

I watched the BBC coverage via a VPN, wow they went all out. Definitely a bit jingoistic, but there you go. I think it's still up for a day or so if you have access to a VPN with a UK portal, give it a spin.

True. But before the British GP the momentum was with Nico. Now it has swung back to Hamilton. It will be interesting to see what happens in Germany.

First look at the 18" wheels Lotus are trying during today's test session...

Big Wheels.jpg

They have used 13" wheels for the last 20 years, the 18" wheels are being evaluated for a possible introduction in the 2017 season.

I assume by using the larger rims, decreasing the sidewall height of the tires, that it would aid in tighter cornering abilities with less sidewall roll.

Interesting.....

Wonder if it's for performance (only valid reason in my book) or because everyone thinks big rims are cool and looks so amazing??

I can't see the tire/rim combo of an 18" being lighter then a 13", so that throws out the unsprung spinning mass benefit.

Stiffer sidewalls maybe, but that can be built into a tire. Plus there must be a reason most professional racing have always used larger sidewalls.

On an F1 car the tire sidewalls form a significant portion of the suspension because the springs are so stiff. Super-low profile tires may have problems with bump steer, not to mention being harsher on the driver.

As for rotational weight I'm not sure the 18s would be heavier. Remember that an F1 car corners at 5g. That means that the very-high sidewalls of F1 tires must be quite thick, and therefore rather heavy, to take that lateral load. A low-profile tire could have much thinner sidewalls. Those thick sidewalls also retain and generate more heat. Low-profile tires would likely run significantly cooler so you could use a softer tread compound. More mechanical grip with comparable durability.

I'll wait until after qualifying to make my picks.

I hope that Bottas continues his podium streak, and that Massa can get rid of his bad luck and get a solid top 6 finish.

I think the weather could play its part. I'd love to see Williams get top spot (either or). Should be some good racing from Hamilton coming through the ranks, as long as his brakes hold up.

yeah. shame we won't get to see most of his moves until the 4th or 5th lap. they should do a picture within a picture from his car from the start of the race.

i was close on my top three quals picks!
