I take it that those of us that ordered direct from Apple should get our MacBook Pros BEFORE the third-party vendors and Apple Stores?

Am I hopefully correct on that?

this is what i was told by apple chat reb...

  • generally how long does it take to go from authorization to preparing ship?

Generally it is pretty quick but with new product launches, it can take a little longer as we do large bulk shipments of the orders.

We have to gather up all the orders together and then ship them out at once.

I would definitely expect more of the earlier delivery time frame for yours since we did get the authorization.

I've gone for the basic 13" MBP with Touch Bar, but delivery isn't due until 6th December earliest. Problem is, I need the laptop relatively soon, so I'm debating canning the order and going for non TB. It's exciting that I could have the non-TB model very soon, but I'm wondering if I will regret it :/

It's still more than a week before the BEGINNING of the window Apple quoted the earliest buyers. It would be cool if it came sooner, but the fear and dread on this page is ridiculous.

Now I'm off to read actual news where more ridiculous fear and dread awaits me...

Or maybe I should just get off the internet for a bit.

You mean get off the planet? I'm right behind you!

Hmm I'm rather tempted to cancel my order from Apple Online Store and purchase the MacBook Pro from a retailer here in Sweden. They have the new MacBook Pro price reduce of 140 dollar. Maybe it is not worth it to cancel from Apple Store and maybe wait a bit longer?

Hmm decisions..

Have you considered the actual USB-C cable for your Western Digital hard drive?

Ooh nice! I never knew this was available. Sweet!

I asked for expedited shipping, they said they couldn't do it because it's coming from overseas, but they did give me a coupon.

ARGHHH WHY

You guys complain but have the credit card "alert". I paid by wired transfer. The money is there..and yet, I still have to wait until December (but i'll probably cancel the order and order a iMac)

Really comes down on what you need, brother.

Hopefully you get your order sooner that 12/6.

Do more people have a definite date? not a range? I ordered in France through the educational store and pickup in local apple store, mine says "December 2" More people have a date, rather than date-range?

You should, but I mentioned it earlier: Last year I ordered from best buy and apple for the rMB, and the Best Buy order came 2 weeks before the apple one did.

Thanks, i didn't know. Maybe because they have fixed shipments or so...

I think the date reflects the very last date in the range given to deliveries.....so like mine is est. 14th-21st Nov....my in-store pickup date would be selected as 21st.

Its likely it will be moved up, its just giving you the guaranteed date it will be available.

since you all are getting charged, i wonder if now Apple will not prioritise the stock in stores

Hi, Same specs.

I ordered early hours on the 28th morning. When selecting delivery, the home delivery was 25th Nov to 2nd Dec, the ship to store option was for the 2nd Dec; no window just the specific date.

So I would guess u're window is 3-4 weeks dispatch and 25th Nov to 2nd Dec delivery window.

Apple has guarantees with its retail partners, so there's likely a portion of the initial production runs that are allocated for stores like Best Buy. Given the timing, it is also likely that these companies plan to make the new MBP part of their Black Friday advertisements (as eye candy to get people in the door or on their website), with a modest discount and at least a few available at each location. 13" and 15" base models are likely to be what hits these shelves.

This leads me to believe that direct orders will ship first, but third party retail availability won't be far behind (though will still be limited).

I am also a CS student, but as you know with programming, programming itself doesn't require that much processing power - sure when you go onto create real world apps and otherwise, maybe you'll need the performance, but for studying/doing basic things, even in IDE's, can't imagine it requiring much overhead. Most of my time will probably be just reading documents too!

Yep, you're exactly right. The dGPU and much much faster CPU are going to be felt in compiling, rendering, that sort of thing. If you do that a lot (debug, compile, debug, compile; whatever) then you're going to really feel it. I'm not a developer so I can't offer much counsel on that, I have done some coding as a hobby over the years though. But for actually hammering code into say, XCode, you aren't going to feel that much of a difference.

The iOS Simulator, if you're doing iOS development, is really going to appreciate the CPU in the 15" model however. The general rule of thumb (which, like any rule of thumb, is more of a 'good guess'), is that you need 10x the CPU horsepower to fully emulate a CPU. So you need something 10x as fast as an A8 to get A8 performance on an x86 CPU, for example.

What's all this talk about embargos?

Serious question.

Almost all companies make reviewers sign an NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement, a legally binding document that says you won't divulge ANYTHING you learn, see, or experience or know). It will have an 'expiration' date. So they can do whatever they want. Film, test, whatever. There may be some restrictions; but generally it's theirs to test. BUT, they can't actually disseminate that information until their NDA expires. Big reviewers like CNET almost certainly have completed, written, shot and edited reviews (video and print) on a hard drive ready to go. They just can't send them out until that NDA expires. That's what people mean by "review embargo".

Companies do this for a lot of reasons; and almost all of them do it. I think the general consensus is that the pre-order crowd will respond to marketing, and those that are on the fence will be just as much on the fence a week from now. Reviews during the pre-order phase can only hurt sales, no matter how good the product is. But once they are 'out', the reviews can help sales because it may sway someone who otherwise wasn't sure, and definitely wouldn't have pre-ordered it sight-unseen.
