No, they did the authorizations when we ordered. They do one authorization at the time the order is placed and then they do a charge at the time of shipping. I work in the world of web based retail and card processing, this is standard practice. It is not typical for a retailer to do an authorization at the time of order and then do another authorization before shipping, then do a charge when shipping.

I didn't get any authorization charge when I made the order. Just yesterday morning. One for the laptop and another for AppleCare.

So everyone that "got charged" the last few days, didn't actually get charged then? This means we're back to step 1. I guess we'll just keep waiting
I don't think we are back to square one. Those "charges" were the final charge. If it was just an authorization, I wouldn't have gotten an email from my credit card company that a charge was approved for the amount of my computer.

My charge from Apple says pending still.

So, tomorrow is the big day. Exactly two weeks from the order and according to Apple, it'll be the first day when it's available to ship.
I've been following this thread and understand your frustration due to the lack of movement on our orders ;). But really, starting from tomorrow, we should really see some stuff happening...

My dongles are ready!!

Guys there is a big difference between an authorization and settlement. To everyone that received an authorization on their card for the full amount - those funds are no longer available to you. Apple has obtained an authorization for the amount and are waiting to settle the authorization, this is why it is pending. When Apple ships your item then they will initiate a settlement on your authorization. That's when the funds actually clear.

In the e-commerce world there are two ways to charge a credit card. 1. Authorize only and pending capture for settlement. 2. Authorize & capture and settlement. When Apple charges your card for items that are in stock they authorize and capture because they know they are going to ship your item very fast. When they are waiting to ship an item that is not in stock they go with the first option to make sure you have the available funds on your card.

Hope this clears the confusion.

Makes sense to not charge the day of the order when it'd be at least two weeks before shipment. It'd also make sense to pre-authorize the charge up to a week in advance, so we may not see anything happen till next week.

Hoping I see movement tomorrow. Credit card was attempted charged Monday, but due to using a different card, it was denied. Cleared it with the credit card company and the card was charged ("pending") Tuesday. Order has not moved yet to preparing for shipment.

Ordered a maxed-out 15" (only exception limiting it to a 1TB HD) and really want this before Thanksgiving. In the first delivery Window, so should be ok.
