I have seen a lot of people ordering 256GB of storage. Out of curiosity, how do you get by with so little?
For me it's because it's a secondary Mac. I have a total of about 4TB of storage available on my iMac. Right now I have 190GB available on my 256GB MacBook, and have ordered a 256GB Pro. :)

Just cancelled my 13" order and went large:

2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
16GB 2133MHz memory
1TB PCIe-based SSD
Radeon Pro 460 with 4GB memory

Delivery is now 15-21 Dec... Hopefully it will be worth the wait!!

I'm in the exact same boat, only I'm having mine shipped to store and the estimated date is 12/21. I'm hoping for a Christmas miracle that brings it to me weeks earlier than that ;)

Nothing like having all your stuff in your laptop.. instead of connecting and disconnecting drives or having to bring them with you everywhere for 5 years. Online storage will still need connection and a really fast one..

just a personal opinion :)

Hi Guys,

Late to the ordering game. Just wondering for the 15" MBP, is it worth upgrading the i7 from the 2.7 to the 2.9Ghz? I know for a fact that for the things I do, I don't require the extra power but is it just worth the upgrade to future-proof it/just spec it up because it'll be all shiny and new? What did everyone else do? haha

I went with an upgrade to the 1TB SSD + GPU 4GB upgrade but am still undecided about the CPU option.

I went with the 2.6 because I have a 2.3 now and it's fine so I figure I'd cut a little cost by keeping my 15" at the "lower" end.

Apple store got weird on me - my Dec 14th to 20th order is still the same dates, but changed from "processing" to "we've received your order", like it was just placed, and a bunch if past orders are not showing up, including one other that is 2-4 weeks. And when you hit the "show more more orders", it says one one or more has changed and to hit refresh. I do, but nothing new happens.

Horses for courses. I currently have a MBP (Mid 2010) which I fitted a 128GB SSD in and a secondary 750GB drive in.

My SSD contains the OS and the Apps, the secondary drive contains the user folders. Most of my 750GB drive is consumed with a virtual machine that I use for work, but even that is rarely used, I RDP into the office and use my machine there.

I have an external drive set up with Windows To Go which I will boot off if I absolutely need to run windows his way I will get full native speed and I'm not wasting disk space locally for something that rarely gets used. I still have loads of space on the boot SSD on my current machine!

I have a NAS which can take 72TB of data, runs Plex Media Server, is accessible from outside my network.

I just don't have a need for large amounts of on board storage anymore. Any large data can be dumped to the NAS, in all likelyhood it's likely to be movies or films and the NAS is the most appropriate place for it.

There's little point in upgrading to 1TB and never using more than the base model for me.

Well this seems different this time. Last time I ordered a macbook pro when they updated, I could have swore the night after the charge hit my credit card it shipped out. They must be holding them or changed the way they first process order. They usually ship earlier than estimated.

Oh well seems like early next week after all we will see them.

Mine is essentially an extension of my phone that I also store world and excel documents on for work. I probably will still have 100GB of storage free.

anyone here get both the usb c to usb a adapter and the lightning to usb a cable?
Yep.

[Edit]

Sorry, misread that slightly, I have the USB-C to USB-A, I also have USB-C to Lightning and by virtue of owning lightning devices I have the USB-A to lightning cable.

Seems money is not an issue so why not max it ?

I didn't. I rarely connect my iOS devices to my computer. I bought a USB-A to USB-C adapter from Amazon. It might be better to just buy the adapter. i thought about buying both, but decided not to and save the money.

I ordered one from BB. They still have the 13" for Nov 16.
Should be fun. Not sure what the hangup here is.

Niiiiiiiice! :)

I should have prefixed that with "if I stuck enough drives in it"....

But yeah, it's nice. I just don't see the point in carting around data on the chance that I may need it, you just end up accumulating crap because you never delete anything.

NAS+Cloud pretty much sorts out all my storage needs.

Ordered just now

15" MacBook Pro Silver

  • 2.9GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
  • 16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
  • Radeon Pro 460 with 4GB VRAM
  • 1TB PCIe-based SSD

Delivery: 3-9 January 2017

Not to get too off topic, but you're running Plex directly on your NAS? Which NAS do you use?

Synology DS916+. It natively has 4 bays, but you can plug in the expansion box for another 5 bays and it's reasonably priced.

It's also got a decent CPU in it (if you use their software player as well it will hardware transcode, but plex doesn't support the hardware transcoder if you need transcoding. In our situation it just streams direct to the TV), the product range is overdue some more releases with more slots natively.

Big synology fan, got a couple in the office as well!

Same, got 7TB on my Synology (2bay only). I own a 256gb Macbook Pro now with about 130gig free. 256 is plenty. No need to have all stored on your SSD.

I can vouch for Synology as well. Just got a DS1815+ a few weeks ago and loaded it up with five 6TB drives and an SSD for cache. I'm using BitTorrent Sync as a DropBox replacement with size limited only by available disk space.
