There's been a lot of negative threads about the new MacBook Pro and it seems that every thread has been countered by additional data that supports upgrading if the user feels it's in their best interest. This thread seems to be a haven for positive thoughts, so I'm going to hang out here more often. I almost cancelled my order based on the first-blush negative threads. I'm glad that I didn't. Now, I'm thinking about that LG 5K display. :) I hope it's in Apple stores this December, at least to check out. Of course, I'm also thinking about the MBP delivery. I hope that we start seeing folks with touch bars saying that it's going into delivery.

These new 5k displays are AWESOME!

Mostly because they've caused the price of 4k displays to drop for those of us who already blew the budget :D

For the price of that LG display you can get a pair of 4k displays, a stand, a hub, and still have more money leftover. Which, incidentally, is exactly what I'm doing.

Steve Jobs is the reason for this direction people hate so much. Prior to the second coming (er.. maybe I should come up with a better way of referring to that..), Apple made all kinds of cool stuff for Pro customers. Powerful Power Macintosh computers, some of the best flatbed scanners money could buy (digital imaging was in it's infancy! REAL pro photographers were using film and scanning their images!), some of the best printers. They had PDA's (well, those weren't great; but they had them!). Apple was a pro company and almost nothing but. Steve Jobs came back and axed all of it. ALL OF IT. He torched Apple's entire line of "pro" stuff in favor of a slightly refreshed Power Macintosh while he commissioned Jony Ive to produce the iMac and the iPod. Sure, pro desktop computers and fast notebooks would still come; but they've been an afterthought ever since.

This is NOT new. I still remember hearing on forums just like these "Apple is an iPod company now, that's all they care about". Somehow, it worked. Somehow, it got even better for pro-consumers without the flatbed scanners and beige Power Macintosh computers. (The whole "design over power" when the trash can Mac Pro's came out was also said about the translucent plastic PowerMac's that replaced the former beige models.) But every year, an announcement, "This is the end! I'm buying Windows! Never again! Apple hates pro's!". But they buy it anyway. Then suddenly it's the holy grail, "Never again! They should go back to last years that I forgot I hated! This is the end! Apple hate's pros!" and again... and again... and again...

"Apple: Hating pro consumers and secretly plotting to completely unravel the content creation business since 1998. But somehow only since xxxx" Replace "xxxx" with whatever year you're reading this in.

I'm buying a new 13 inch, but I'm not entirely convinced about the above. There's plenty of keynotes with Jobs where he stressed that Apple had the fastest processors and products, best screens, and so on. For instance see the iMac. The new Pro has none of these

I haven't decided yet. Probably the 27" models from Dell.

The new MacBook Pro's DO have the fastest CPU's available in their segment. With top-range quad-core i7's available in the 15" as BTO.

There's a lot of fuss about Kaby Lake because people assume "newer=faster". But Kaby Lake's equivalent mobile chips aren't yet available and they aren't faster. They just use less energy. More efficient? Yes. Faster? No. Either way, the comment wasn't about performance, but about Steve Jobs shifting Apple to becoming a mass-market consumer focused company. He was a consummate salesman though, so if he was selling the fastest machine, he sure as hell was going to tell you that. If he wasn't? Then he was going to tell why it was better anyway.

There's also some confusion about the base model 13" being "slower". Ill-informed folks assume the lower clock speed means a slower CPU but it doesn't work that way in this day and age. The 2.0GHz Core i5 is actually FASTER (albeit slightly) than the "higher clocked" chip in the previous model, despite using a lot less energy. That being key to allowing a smaller battery and, thus, less weight.

Yeah, now there's a thread on the home page about a rumor of upcoming OLED displays for the Mac. The latest and greatest is always "around the corner" or "in the pipeline". Knowing Apple, if they release OLED displays on the MacBooks, the price is going to be outrageous. $6000 for a maxed out 15"...

The good news at least is that Apple is nowhere near done with the Mac as some Negative Nancy's speculated.

Replacing a 2006 MacBook Pro. My main machine is an 2.8 GHz Core i5 mid-2010 iMac, which is also due for replacement soon as cold weather makes it do this.

What are you talking about? The base model 13" uses a 15watt Skylake even though the 15 watt kaby lakes have been out for a month now. And they are not just more efficient than skylake, they are in fact faster. The integrated graphics in the 15w kaby lakes (HD620) has the same performance as the 28w skylake (iris 550).

Apple isn't what it used to be.

The dedicated GPU is not needed for streaming video, user interface elements, et al. It does not come on for those sorts of activities. There are apps that let you see whether or not it's on and even disable it. Just to be safe, if I were you, I'd go that route anyway. If you're on a long haul flight without power, for example, or in some other situation where charging isn't practical; it's probably best to just disable that. However, Apple does a pretty good job here. The dedicated GPU comes on when it needs to. But in a lot of ways it's at the mercy of the developer. Light duty but poorly coded applications could trigger the dGPU. And some people are surprised to find that applications like Photoshop can trigger it as well; but indeed those applications take advantage of it. The dedicated GPU is not a "last resort option" for when the "integrated GPU just can't handle it". It's used whenever it can provide any sort of advantage to the user. But the iGPU is plenty fast enough to handle a lot of mundane tasks (Streaming, browsing, etc.) without breaking a sweat. Since usage on the iGPU or the dGPU wouldn't change the users experience, the dGPU remains in it's slumber.

Thanks for your reply. It is just some ghastly threads where it was turning on as you said, when codes badly or, if it does have a slight advantage. Sometimes, I'd rather just save the noise, heat and energy and let it go on iGPU - because unless gaming or heavy duty GPU work, I'd rather it always go the iGPU route - but from what you wrote, doesn't seem to be the case.

Sorry, I was referring mostly to the 15" model. The U series Kaby Lake chips are just beginning; though it's possible they hadn't begun shipping when Apple started producing these models and perhaps not in quantities great enough to support Apple's load along with other vendors. As I understand it, yield has been an issue. The Y and H series chips, like what we'd see in the 15" model, won't be here until the December-February timeframe and don't represent significant performance improvements. Apple not waiting 2 or 3 months to update the MacBook Pro 15" is not the end of the world. The 13" model could've benefited from the Kaby Lake U series chips. Though I think in a lot of benchmarks, many of the 'claims' Intel made about just how fast these would be were just a wee bit "exaggerated".

The 13" hit in the GPU department reinforces Apple apparently seeing it as just a stepping stone between the MacBook and the "real" MacBook Pro (15"). It seems like it would make more sense to call the 12" MacBook the "MacBook Air", the 13" the "MacBook", and the 15" the "MacBook Pro".

Yep, I agree. They are expensive, ugly, and don't seem to offer much that their competitors don't. They are 5k, which is nice. But it's questionable whether they'd support my Windows PC I'll also be using them with (I don't think they will), and 4k represents an improvement over my current 1440p Cinema Display at a fraction of the price. So a pair of ugly Dell displays will replace my gorgeous (albeit quite thick and heavy by today's standards) Apple Cinema Display.

I have a 2013 (pre 5K) iMac right now and, having just ordered the new 15", I'm leaning towards selling the iMac and buying one of these 5K displays but they are just so ugly, even the dell 5K is more attractive. I really hope that someone puts out a good looking 5K display soon...

Is anyone else getting an error page when you click your order on Apple? Hopefully it didn't get accidentally cancelled or they are updating to shipped!
