Why is everyone here insistent on 16gb RAM? Unless you're doing 3D modelling surely you'll use nowhere near that? I'm waiting on my MacBook as my first ever Mac so maybe it's a form factor thing, but I have a self-built gaming PC at home and 8GB has been fine for me. I'm an ex Intel employee so I'm more of a CPU kinda guy anyway!

For now I don't need it, but I (and I assume many others) plan on keeping this machine for several years. If history is any indicator, RAM requirements for OS and applications will continue to increase as functionality is added.

When I buy a Mac it has to last for at least 5-6 years. I'm almost certain in 3 years from now an operating system and the software everybody will run will need 16 GB ram to run smooth.

In my 2013 27" imac i've put 24 GB RAM. I'm glad I did because I'm working with a lot of large photoshop files at once.
So I also agree 16 GB RAM is the only logical choice if you want to make your machine future proof.

Just cancelled my order on a macbook pro and put in a new upped one instead:

space grey

2.9Ghz i7
Radeon Pro 460 4GB vram

Feels better to max it out (I hope), current one is a mid 2010 macbook pro..

Are you serious?

There's no way an OS will need 16GB of RAM anytime soon.. lol. OSX also has memory compression so it's the least likely to need more RAM of any OS. Besides that.. people are running Sierra on 4GB machines without issue..

I honestly think these "16gb or your machine isn't futureproof" users are either trolls or have never used a Mac machine for a decent period of time before. Like I'm sorry but you're clueless.

I use Photoshop as well and unless you're doing massive workflows.. and I'm talking super massive.. there's no need for anywhere NEAR 24gb of RAM. That kinda tells me what you know on this subject.

Nobody should be concerned about having 8GB of RAM unless they're a professional who needs to render huge creative projects or something of that magnitude, and most of those people are smart enough to have a desktop or server for that anyways. This won't change in 5-6 years either. Developers are trying to make their programs less resource intensive now more than ever.

Whoa man, no need to go all out on people. If people want 16 GB of RAM, let them. I am one person who wants that much RAM due to applications that I run for my job. Who are you to judge my needs or wants?

I'm not saying certain people won't need 16gb of RAM. I'm saying since these machines have been announced there's been people saying 16gb of RAM is the only way your machine will be futureproof or work for 5-6 years, that's complete BS and doesn't even make any sense. Like I have no idea why people say that. If you need it, get it, but to say an 8GB won't last just as long for a user who doesn't need it is dumb.

That is fine, you can have your opinion on the topic, but I don't think RAM requirements call out the need to insult other members.

As a Software Engineer, I can't get by with 8GB of ram.

I don't know where I insulted anyone, but thanks for allowing me to speak my mind. If you need more RAM, get more RAM, I'm not insulting you. I'm saying not everyone needs that much RAM and there's no reason to act like they do.

Ha I'm presently maxing out 8 gigs with a Windows 10 VM open in my Air, honestly I would likely get more than 16 if it was offered.

And that's perfectly ok, many people can though, and odds are their machines will work just as long as yours with more RAM in it.

Can't agree with the above personally. If you're not gaming or doing 3D modelling, there's no need for more than 8gb RAM now or in the near future. Of course I could be wrong, but future proofing isn't how it used to be, and any major technical advance which means we need more than that amount of RAM would almost certainly require an entire new machine anyway. But I must add, its down to choice, so not stopping anyone doing how they wish :)

FYI/on topic: I have a second non-touchbar model on the way now (first one was base model acquired from Best Buy last Friday, 28Oct16).
  • BTO Order placed evening of Monday, 31Oct16 with expedited shipping (processing)
  • Order Status went to "Preparing for Shipment" early this morning, Thursday 03Nov16
  • Order status as of right now (mid-morning, 03Nov16) is "Preparing for Shipment"
  • I get shipping notifications from FedEx, I received one early this morning and it appears the unit is on a plane bound for Anchorage right now. Appears Apple's ordering system might be a little behind on the tracking/shipping status.
Scheduled delivery is Tuesday, 08Nov16 but I'm guessing I should get it sooner than that.

So here is my dilemma, I had to cancel my order twice because first I forget the student discount then second time, I forgot to upgrade processor and graphics card...

So I finally placed a third order and this is what I got...
15-inch MacBook Pro - Silver

$2,689.00
With the following configuration:
• 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
• 16GB 2133MHz memory
• 256GB PCIe-based SSD
• Radeon Pro 460 with 4GB memory
• Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
• Four Thunderbolt 3 ports
• Touch Bar and Touch ID
• Force Touch trackpad
• Accessory Kit

Now because I canceled twice, my order says 4-5 weeks.

I called to see if they could do anything or upgrade shipping. And he was really nice but he didnt offer any help or assitance as to what I could do to upgrade shipping. Because I remember reading some people called and got there ship times moved up.

Any advice on how I can make that happen? Thanks a lot and good luck everyone with there laptops hope it comes lot sooner then expected.

In my case I use to have 2 Parallels Windows VM open in my 13 inch 2011 MBP for Excel-CrystalBall Montecarlo simulations (upgraded to 16GB and SSD disk) and I am clear that I want the 16GB and 15 inch, as my sight was severely impacted after 46 years.
Looking at the price of the upgrades I selected the top 15 inch with 1TB space grey, later after a "what the heck" moment I changed to 2TB silver with a 4,9999€ machine (including 868€ in Spanish sales tax that I will have refunded as I am not resident).
A lot of money but… what the heck ;-)

I just got my shipping updated to over night now it delivers Nov 15 to Nov 22 Bto 13" Mackbook pro with touch Bar

It's really an emergency for them to ship Touch bar version. Every news today is talking about alternatives for 2016 Mac.

I ordered earlier today, literally about 4 hours ago, and I've gone to Preparing for Dispatch already. I reckon I'll get it much sooner than the 11th :)

It's been my general observation that as GPU, RAM and Storage become available, developers will up the amount used, and that's speaking as a software engineer. Consider the iPhone software, originally most were about 10-15 MB, now you have Twitter and FB, and they're like 90-150MB.

The same is true for work computers. Consider for example basic Java VM that a lot of my work software run on still get set at 512MB RAM and I have to manually up that limit. That's because the average computer don't have the RAM for higher defaults. There's also other functions that software can use like various caching mechanism that's best kept for when significant amount of RAM is available.

I've also seen a phenomenon where my co-workers have 3 browsers opened, each with like 15-25 tabs. That take very minimal CPU power, but a ton of RAM to keep all of that going.
