Guys, all of you that gets a shipping notice on your non-Touch Bar MBP, could you please note that it is a non-Touch Bar MBP?

Us with orders on the Touch Bar MBP's thinks that the shipping is finally happening only to get a tiny bit disappointed each time.

Thanks in advance. You're the best!
I was feeling the same way about those non-Touch Bar ship dates. I thinking someone needs to change the title of this forum because it doesn't specifically say Touch Bar only, at lease I don't see it anywhere.

Ordered 15'' 256gb HDD Base model. Up in the air whether to cancel or keep my preorder.

Reasoning:

Current Macbook Pro is from 2009, need a new one.
Arghh, but the price!
At that price, perhaps I should use this as my main music production machine, then it would be worth it.
But then Id have to get 512gb HDD version, which is even more expensive.
Oh, and its only 16gb RAM, at work I use a 32gb Mac Pro and i def fill more than 16gb of it. 16gb wont do for 4 years.
Perhaps I should wait until the next refresh...
But then the 32gb option will be even more expensive.
Perhaps I should keep my Macbook Pro preorder after all and get (my own) Mac Pro for production next year
Arghh, but the price!

And so on....

It's been my general observation that as GPU, RAM and Storage become available, developers will up the amount used, and that's speaking as a software engineer. Consider the iPhone software, originally most were about 10-15 MB, now you have Twitter and FB, and they're like 90-150MB.

The same is true for work computers. Consider for example basic Java VM that a lot of my work software run on still get set at 512MB RAM and I have to manually up that limit. That's because the average computer don't have the RAM for higher defaults. There's also other functions that software can use like various caching mechanism that's best kept for when significant amount of RAM is available.

I've also seen a phenomenon where my co-workers have 3 browsers opened, each with like 15-25 tabs. That take very minimal CPU power, but a ton of RAM to keep all of that going.

If anything is going to push the 8gb limit it isn't going to be browser usage. My work laptop is ancient, from the mid 00's with a Pentium processor and about 2gb RAM and it can handle a shedload of browser tabs. Short of 3D graphics, gaming, and running virtual machines, I can't think of anything that would even remotely push 8GB of RAM personally.

Just called apple for my 13" touch bar model and asked for faster shipping. She upgraded me to overnight for free and my delivery dates became 3 days earlier!

I would expect them to start shipping mid next week. Was hoping they would come before election day lol

I was originally scheduled for November 17-25, now it is showing as November 15-22!

EDIT: I made a mistake, she upgraded me to 2-3 day shipping for free, not overnight. I asked for the fastest method.

the better question is how did you get upgraded to that shipping for free? i have seen others in here be charged for faster shipping.

I too called Apple and was upgraded to 2-3 day shipping for free. I just told the rep that I was going to travel around the expedited delivery time and was hoping to get it earlier. He was very quick to upgrade it for me, without any discussion of an extra charge. I checked my order after and it was updated for free.

I literally just called the number, gave my order number to the automated system, waited on hold for about 5-10 minutes, then spoke with a really nice lady named Linn. I asked if I could upgrade my shipping and she said she would take a look.

She told me that I should've upgraded the shipping when I placed the order, which there wasn't an option to do, but then said she upgraded my shipping for free this time.

All these people upgrading their shipping - I assume you missed the discussion yesterday!

If expedited shipping was not an option at the time of ordering, this is because Apple is already using it.

It's highly unlikely that you will receive your MacBook sooner by ringing and asking to upgrade shipping.

People do this every time, and never get them sooner.

I would understand your concern, but if it only took 10 minutes of my time and zero cost, why not?

I've preordered countless iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, etc. and have never called to get my shipping upgraded, but I saw the opportunity even for the slightest chance of getting it earlier so I took it.

Nothing lost.

For 14$ it's worth a try. If this wasn't an option why do the customer service people have access to applying it? Also, some BTO 13 inch MacBook Pros have been shipped with 4-6 day delivery windows. This cuts that down by a few days.

Ive waited 8 months for this purchase and I just want it asap considering my lack of computer.

so I called and they would not upgrade the shipping they told me it's already on the fastest shipping available

I rebooted my Mac yesterday, and Safari is already using 3,982MB of RAM. I have around 20 tabs open, so maybe that's slightly more than most people, but it's not completely unreasonable. One of the tabs is using 683MB of RAM all by itself (the Google Docs spreadsheet linked on this forum). I'm an app developer, so I usually have a lot of apps open, but nothing that uses an extreme amount of memory like Virtual Machines, Video or Photo apps, etc. On my Mac with 32GB of RAM, I'm already 2.5GB into virtual memory. Heck, I have a 47 page PDF open in Preview.app and it's using 3.5GB of RAM. In Preview!

So let's see, my first 8GB would be gone after opening Safari and Preview. Hardly a professional workload…

8GB is a good entry-level amount of RAM. But if you're the type of user who steps up to a MacBook Pro because you use your Mac for a variety of tasks, I wouldn't recommend anything less than 16GB of RAM.

Most people are paying about $14.

Yes, definitely go for it if you like. But it won't arrive earlier.

The reason it is available to the CS reps is that their systems are designed for use 99% of the time when items are not pre-orders and upgrading shipping will make a difference.

The removal of the expedited option at the time of ordering is done manually for when Apple knows they will be using fast shipping anyway.

Realistically it is in Apple's interest to leave the option open if they aren't using expedited as standard because the majority of people would pay the $14.

EDIT to add: I remember when people did this for the iPhone 5 only to find it actually delayed their orders because while the shipping timeframe was faster, the despatch date was delayed to compensate. Proceed with caution. :p

Then you don't use Chrome (which is good) but it's definitely a ram hog. That plus a few apps open and it might struggle in a few years. I doubt we're going to be using less ram for applications or browsing so preparing with extra ram just seems smart. Kind of like carrying a coat. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
