I think I need more RAM(s)

I'm a web developer and I've never had a problem on the crappy ancient laptop my work have given me with 2GB RAM...

And if you really absolutely need a workhorse, the Mac laptops are not what any reasonable dev should be going for let's face it. They get enough criticism for their spec that I think everyone realises.

Can you share your workflow? Web Development is a very very wide field. Saying you're a web developer isn't super descriptive. I can litterally do it with Notepad and 1 browser tab, but that's not a productive workflow.

I can describe that as my job as well, and if I'm spinning up a couple of Vagrant VM with decent spec for Wordpress sites, that's about 1-2GB and 2vCore each, sometimes I've had 4-6 running. MySQL take of 1-4GB depending on what I'm working with. RubyMine, PhpStorm, WebStorm can each take 2GB and sometimes I have had all 3 opened. If I'm doing stress testing on servers and running JMeter, that can be 500-2000 connections with associated CPU and RAM usage, and that can suck up about 3 or 4GB of RAM. This isn't counting all the background productivity apps like mail, slack, firefox and Safari.

Hey guys. Weirdest thing just happened. So I decided to chat with Apple to see if they could expedite my shipping and they told me the usual - that the method they were using was already the expedited method. The guy was super nice and even told me he is waiting for his new MBP too. But then something unusual happened. I received an "Order Change Confirmation" email and my shipping was upgraded to 2-3 days. My delivery date moved up 2 days. It was Nov 17-25 before, now it says Nov 15-22. Congrats! My MBP15" to Spain stay in Dec 12 - Dec 15

Guys I also called to get my shipping sooner and now when I check my order status it went from 15 November to 6 December... :(
My advice to anyone who is going to try this, avoid bursting into tears and DON'T make personal insults against Phill Schiller and Tim Cook.

Troll, no doubt.

You lucky SOB - and you have the 13 inch SG. That's the most popular model.

You can all thank me later but a lot of you may have moved up one. I am canceling the one I ordered through the online store and reordered through the Business Sales Dept. Cost me a few weeks delivery but saved me $300 with the discount we get there. I don't need it that desperately though I will be jealous when you all start getting yours first!

I wasn't saying my example is representative. I should clarify that due to the ownership of my company (a bank I might add, hence heavy restrictions), we're unable to upgrade our systems, so we use very limited tools. Thankfully not to such a simple level as Notepad though.

And in my arguments, I have clarified that I'm excluding those using these laptops for gaming, 3D modelling, or using VM's, so instantly I would argue that 8GB is unsuitable for you. For an average user who does none of the aforementioned, they shouldn't hit anywhere near that figure imo. My gaming PC smashes everything I throw at it and I only have 8GB of RAM. Having said that, my experience is based entirely around Windows.

I'm sorry. Did you read his post?

Thank you

I work with and have worked with intensive programs before, I have and have built gaming PCs and high performance PCs in the past.. I get it. Some people need the boost.

The thing is it's annoying when people who need that boost in performance use that to try to make everyone think they need it as well. Like 99% of the reasons people are saying to get 16GB of RAM are misinformation. I just hate seeing people think they have to drop a few more hundred dollars to "futureproof" their machine or "make it run faster".. people have no idea what they're saying. Just because you need to run a bunch of VMs or do heavy rendering on a MacBook doesn't mean other users have to too.

But it goes the other way too where someone who doesn't need the RAM thinks it is ridiculous that someone else does. Everyone's use case will always be different and each person has to make that call. However, maybe if someone is asking if they should upgrade to 16 GB of RAM without any case, the best advice might be no. Seems likely (but not guaranteed) that if someone needs a good bit of RAM, they know it.

Hello guys, I just chatted with Apple, but unfortunately, the guy said that it is already shipping in fastest method, so I could not get the upgrade shipping... should I call them? or just leave as it is...

Whom is this Macbook marketed to?
Who do you think is complaining about the 16 GB tops?

I guess it's professionals.
I think the "normal people" who get a PRO for style and fun don't complain as much, most of them might not even know what "a RAM" is.

What I want to say is, arguing about the behaviour of customers of a Macbook PRO by saying "UNLESS they're a professional" is a moot argument because I believe most complaining customers indeed ARE professionals.

I'm gonna go ahead and say most people in a field where they need a powerful workstation to do their work are not looking at a MacBook Pro for their main daily driver, MBPs have never been powerful enough to do some of the crazy stuff people have been expecting after these were announced. If you want a machine to run like 5 VMs at the same time, or to render extensive footage in Final Cut, or to do 3D modeling or design, you never should've been looking at MBPs in the first place.

Apple offers the Mac Pro for that very reason.

From what I've seen, most "complaining customers" are either justified in their concerns and have already found an alternative or have settled looking at the pros and cons and picked up this machine .. or they have no idea what they're talking about I.e. "I can't believe it can't have X amount of RAM for *insert ridiculous workflow for any laptop here*"

Check your email. They might have just done it for you after you ended the chat. That's what they did for me.

Exactly. If you have to ask the question, you probably don't need it. Those who know they need 16gb know they do if they're a professional who's using the machine for an intensive purpose.

I haven't seen nearly as many people suggesting 8GB over 16GB however.

Agreed, and I'm unsure whether this was indirectly aimed at me, but I'd just like to clarify that I do not think this way :).
