As someone who recently bought at XS, I am anxiously waiting for Apple to release a bountiful update that fixes any of these issues.... I can only wait.
As of now they're leaving the processor at full speed because most reviewers testing how powerful the new iPhone. Once these performance reviews starts to die down that's when Apple comes with update lower the processing power a little bit then you get a longer battery life. :D

I don't remember my battery life when we first got the iPhone X, but I had no complaints about iOS 12 during the beta - and the slight speed improvements were nice. But right after the production iOS 12 was installed on both my wife's and my iPhone X, we noticed worse battery life :-( Very noticeable since before iOS 12, we'd easily make it to bed before hitting the 10% mark. Since the upgrade, there have been several days on which I had to recharge before bed.

Interesting thing is, when a vendor releases a new generational type product, they often over design it to make sure that it doesn't fall victim to some as yet unknown condition that makes it perform less than expected. Extra factors of safety for the lack of real world experience, if you will. As such, I'd think that the X is a pretty sturdy device and Apple will optimize future generations away from that as experience with the OLED and such technologies accumulates. E.g., a neighbor had a first generation fiberglass boat made by Carver. That SOB was about 2-inches of laid up fiberglass. Nowadays you'll maybe get an inch of less of laminated materials. Just as good for designed usage and based on years of experience with the materials, but not overbuilt or tank-like as the first generations were.

Or maybe Apple just needs to fix the OS <shrug>

My XS seems to be getting a bit worse battery life than my X, but that usually seems to be the case for brand new phones, doing all the "new phone" stuff, spotlight indexing, etc. Someone should pop open Instruments while doing these battery tests and see if there are any obvious differences in CPU or RAM use, etc. Would be interesting.

Considering how similar the X and Xs are, I honestly think this makes the X a better phone. Battery life is one of the top features for me. I'll take the full hour more battery, slightly slower processor and missing the software camera features for $100 less.

It is. That’s why Apple discontinued it instead of offering it as an older model. :apple:

My XS lasts a damned sight longer than my 6S did, even though that had a new battery less than a year ago, so I'm happy! We're talking small margins here, it's not like there are days difference between any of these phones. Try putting any of them up against a Nokia 5110 :)

All the indexing is finished within 48hrs. What you have after that is what you’ll get. :apple:

iOS12 has been great on my iPhone X.

The X still really holds its own - if anything iOS12 took the training wheels off of it.

Guys it's not ios 12, It's an antenna problem with the Intel chip, what gets me is the x had an inferior chip last year and it was fine, this year the new modem was meant to be a big improvement all round with bands/signal/connection and built on 14nm, but the Xs had to be altered as well with an antenna top and bottom, it shouldn't happen in fairness.

Well then, I guess it’s a bummer for you that there’s roughly a 0% chance that the results of this one test trump Apple’s likely umpteen thousands they performed before reporting the precise opposite of this.

This end result wouldn’t matter to me. The Xs is to the x as the 6s is to the 6. One hour of surfing life, which isn’t my use case anyway, doesn’t make a difference.

I think we look into these test to much. In one of the videos above showing the X loses, he has Cellular enabled but disabled on the others - this means the X was trying to find signal.

Also, you don’t know what these devices are doing in the background - downloading data for an application, software update etc.

For me, as long as the device lasts a full day with medium/heavy useage that’s fine - my Xs Max does.

Unless the "internet surfing" test used is a synthetic benchmark, this conclusion is invalid. Tom's is comparing a web surfing test done one year ago with another done today.

1. Did they visit the exact same websites as last time and stay on each page the exact same amount of time and were the exact same ads embedded on those pages? Was the cellular reception identical?
No.

Dumb test.

What battery life can I expect if I upgrade from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 7? I really prefer the smaller form factor and aluminium construction.

Go with the 8 if you can. Great phone, better processor (more future proof), great battery life, still has that familiar form factor and home button.

I felt the battery difference when I updated to iOS 12 using my X. I was getting probably 20-30 minutes less a day but when I turned off screen time everything is back to normal I’m getting at least 12 hours a day on my X again.

It’s a faster iOS so it’s going to be a bit more of the battery drain.

They should’ve tested iOS 12 on both X and XS, but at the end of the day, the XS with smaller battery is only supposed to get about 30 minutes more over the X. /end thread

Have enjoyed my X very much. First phone I get all day battery usage without having to charge.

I expect an update that will ruin iP X battery life, so that Xs can have better battery life.
Apple was always good at those things ^^

and the 8+ has even better battery than the X. Think i'll be holding onto my 8+ for a while.
