Here. You can buy an Alienware that is thick, has a big keyboard, and has more power than any MacBook. It also weighs three times the MacBook.

Many options if you don't want a MacBook. Apple does not have a monopoly on laptops.

True, the Lenovo P51 is probably my best choice. I do know this. I do however prefer Mac OS and Apple do have a monopoly on this. ;)

Proper keyboard? I would not want to go back to the old style keyboard at all.
[doublepost=1496892794][/doublepost]I bought a new Honda last year. This year they came out with a new one. Feels like a slap in the face.

That's fine, you stick with the thin laptop. I'm not questioning your needs. However, I would like Apple to offer some choice over keyboards and produce a thicker model with a thicker keyboard, like they used to do. Why does every laptop they make have to be a thin one?

While I'm happy you enjoy the new style keyboard I could never agree with that statement. I've been typing all my life, I know keys with a long travel work best for touch typing. I shouldn't have to "get used to it" just because Apple decided their machines look cooler if they're thin.
Of course you should. You are used to a certain kind of keyboard, and that motor memory will impact how you write.

Yes you are correct about how my motor memory impacts my typing ; however I shouldn't have to "reset" my motor memory and relearn skills I already possess because of an Apple design decision that offers no practical real world benefit other than an aesthetic one.

Let me fix that for you.

2017 MacBook Pro is around 7% Faster Than Last Year's Model in Geekbench

(I'm not trying to feel good about my purchase of a 2016 model either, I honestly thought, well if its 20% faster maybe I will sell mine and upgrade, from what I read earlier this year Kaby Lake was 6-7% up, lets see what mine gets.... 7% though!)

Yep similar story - new 3.1 ghz model is 9-10% faster in synthetic Geekbench test...Radeon 560 vs 455 not tantalising enough to consider an upgrade. Whatever.

Same here! Mines still pushing strong :) battery doesn't last the 8 hours it use to but still decent. Keep putting off buying a new rMBP because mine 2012 is still quick and responsive!

U can swap the battery, albeit the glue will be a bit difficult to remove.

I used string soaked in googone and slowly slid it under the batteries.

I switched up from a 2012 Unibody to a maxed 2016 and a lot of people are surprised when I tell them that it really wasn't a massive leap (for the things I'm doing at least). I knew that it wouldn't be a massive jump too. The only reason I upgraded was because I dearly wanted a 5K monitor and I don't regret my purchase in the least. The LG 5K Ultrafine may not be a stunner, but it's one fine display at a killer price.

You definitely needed to upgrade in your case!

The USB-C is actually a very attractive feature of the new laptop...

That's just the CPU. There are other things like SSD/RAM I/O performance which the mid-2012 15" rMBP just won't be able to keep up. The NVMe/PCIe SSD is a lot faster and with lower latency than the SATA 3 SSD in the old rMBP (Apple moved to PCIe with the late 2013 model moved to NVMe from AHCI with the late 2016 models).

If your compare the SATA3 SSD performance to the current NVMe/PCIe, we're looking at a jump from around 400 MB/s read and write to over 2GB/s. That's a huge gain.

Then there's the GPU. The GT650M is old and can't run most of the games released in the last two years.

Plus there's Thunderbolt 3 which allows you to add external GPU and brings the performance of the MBP up another notch or two. That's not possible with the mid-2012 model. And I'm speaking as someone who also has been running the mid-2012 model for the last 5 years. This year is the first year when my rMBP starts to feel slow.

Yes all those improvements are there - but for the last 2 years I've been telling myself that I'd update my 2012 MBP as soon as Apple release one with 32Gb RAM - still waiting. I need my next machine to happily see me through a few more years and will wait.

I get a 6-7% difference from my late 2016 15" 2.7 MacBook Pro compared to the new generation. Not sure I will ever notice that difference in real life scenarios. To be honest, if I upgraded I would just get a machine that would spend 6-7% longer waiting for me to press the next key on the keyboard :)

I'm more interested in battery life. Anyone?

I wonder is there an easy way to tell MacBook Pro 2017 (with Kaby Lake) from 2016 version? By some ID number or somehow? I'll be shopping for one relatively soon, just don't want to buy the old one now, when there is the new one.

You're right, it was 7.5 months months ago. That 1.5 extra months totally destroys his point /s

oh did they did a mid-cycle update? I swear I bought my Pro over a year ago..I could be remembering it wrong. I have had like 5 Macs is 5 years.

The easiest way is to click on the apple top-left on the screen. Select 'About this Mac' and read what it says in the parenthesis after 'MacBook Pro'. Mine says '(15-inch, 2016)'

From a YouTube review that is up, you should be able to tell from the ctrl and option keys as they contain different symbols. On the attached image the 2017 is on the right. As for a product code on the box, not certain.

Ya'll retarded.

It's more like a 5% difference in performance. Using "geekbench averages" to say it's 20% faster is moronic.

How can you know what those machines were doing during the benchmark...

Seriously, how ****ing stupid is the editor??

If we compare the highest result of the 6920hq and the highest result of 7920hq on Geekbench its exactly 6.15688% difference. We'll have to assume the highest cores were performed under the most ideal conditions and they're both at their maximum.

I'm so glad I bought mine six months ago when it previously took them three years to update.... what a slap in the face...

I feel the same way. Got mine in November. Feels like the iPad 3 -> iPad 4 release.

I've been using Mac for the last 20 years. I've never read of a 20% speed bump. I'm sure its more like a 5-7% speed bump, which fits what you usually see between MacBook iterations.

Gets worse. The version you have should also prove the least desirable when it comes to resale. Another crap iPad 3 scenario.

I lost a whole $100 on mine... Yep flipped on ebay and bought the new one with received a $50 gift card from Target so the net loss was actually $50.

I am massively happy that I have purchased the mid 2015 15" MBP maxed our. At least I do not look like an idiot with dongles and got a great performane.
I don't look like an idiot with dongles and I purchased a 2016 MBP. I barely used the USB ports and never used the SD card and display ports.

Hi TTT2001, that's music to my ears ;) thanks for sharing!!!!
[doublepost=1496935594][/doublepost]I'm just curious how the battery runtime of the new high spec 15" models compares to the 2016er series... ??

was thinking about this, as not everything is completely clear, but I have a early2013 Retina, 2.7, 16GB, 512GB SSD, w/GT650M, .... i need to upgrade now, and thinking I will probably see a significant performance increase in PS related activities, ... I am hoping, .. my machine, is tired, and on it's last leg, .. thoughts?
