Okay I just wanted to trow a quick one here. After using the device for day...

I don't know if my unit is "as bad as others" but this was the pic that i managed to get that shows it the most

https://imgur.com/a/3YcwA

The pink tint is in the right bottom corner, is there even a chance that I can get better one if I exchange this? Is this considered being "a good one"? (Also, Don't mind the reflections... They are from lights in my apartment)

And calibrated the screen to 7243K to get the white as white as possible.

Are you only able to see the pink spot on that angle? The display I finally settled on does look darker and maybe a little pinkish along the bottom but only at certain angles (mostly when the screen in titled closer to a 90 degree angle). In everyday use though when I’m not actually looking for the problem I don’t seem to notice it.

Also I have not had to calibrate this display at all. The bad displays I returned all needed calibration otherwise they were way too warm. Night shift was laughable with how orange it looked on those displays, but the one I kept looks similar to my 7 Plus in Night Shift.

Yeah in "normal" (D65 or something) it looks horrible....

After calibration (putting 7243K in white balance mode) it looks OK but there is still the pinkish shift on the bottom right corner :( (In normal viewing mode)

Dang it.... This one's back-light bleed was OK. I did though that it wasn't normal that i needed to put it so high in Kelvin to get "decent" whites....

Oh well, maybe 4th one is the charm right(?)

If there isn't change in the 4th one, i will have to probably give up on Apple on this one...

And yeah... In night mode it looks like someone vomited to my screen.

Yeah when I was calibrating the other ones I had them at 7000 and it was still a little warm, but anything more looked a bit too blue. I think these displays are meant to be a bit warmer, but the bad ones just take it too far. I always noticed that calibrating them made the pink spots worse though.

It took 5 for me to get a good one so I feel your pain. I can only imagine the poor people who end up buying these MacBooks refurbished. I doubt Apple will be changing the displays on them before they put them back on sale.

I really doubt Apple is changing anything on these devices... Its disgusting that Apple is charging this much for this type of screen quality.

These are made for professional work...

Going to change this one and lets see what i get.

Mine has an awesome screen, but I still found an issue with the construction as you can see in a previous post. So frustrating....

So got my 3rd 15"
https://imgur.com/a/hZXoB

Backlight bleed at the bottom isn't visible to the naked eye. And out of 3 this is by long shot the best screen..... BTW its full brightness in almost 100% dark environment... When you actually view content In that setting, its going to burn your eyes lol....

Going to keep this one.
What is your 15" LCD panel code? A030 or A031?

So i returned the 3rd one to the shop.

They said that the 4th one will be with 99% certainty the same as the 3. with some backlight bleed or pink tint (as bad as the 3th one)

They did give me 2 options:
1. return the item and i will not order them 4th one.
2. they will exchange me another one, and the 4th one i cannot return if i find something wrong with it....

I choosed the 1. option and literally i am now banned from the store to order another MBP 15".... lol

idk what i'm going to do. Maybe look into OLED-Windows laptops or something.... Have to think now what i will do.

So after exchanging an embarrassing amount of MacBooks I finally got a screen with no issues-13”. However I noticed the lid has a minor gap on the corner. Wondering if at this point just ignore the gap since the screen is great or try for the “perfect” one.

I can’t see the problem. There’s no way I’d notice or care about what you’re trying to show. Take the perfect screen! How often are you peeping at the corner of a laptop when closed?

I do wish Apple used some harder aluminium formula for their laptops like they did after bend-gate with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. They dent extremely easily on the edges if you’re not careful and use a good protective case.

Probably not, but people who return them do so for a variety of reasons and I feel like screen issues are probably only a minor proportion of overall returns.

Other reasons for returning might include:
  • Not liking the shallow butterfly keyboard
  • Buyers’ remorse or financial reasons
  • Deciding you need USB-A and other ports after all
  • Change of mind - wanting a different model of Mac laptop (13” vs 15” MBP, MacBook or Air) or a desktop
  • Wanting a different specification like storage capacity, CPU, RAM or graphics card
  • Change of mind - wanting a different colour!
  • Other non screen-related problems or DOA. I returned once because of perceived overly noisy fans under load
  • Deciding you only need or want an iPad Pro instead
  • Change of circumstance - get a work laptop
  • Etc etc etc
I don’t think most people will notice or care enough about the screen problems shown in this thread to bother returning them. In obvious and extreme cases sure, in which case Apple will probably replace them. But it’s a subset of tech enthusiasts you’ll mostly find on this site and they’re likely to have higher standards and be more picky (which is a good thing in my book).

I say this partly because I’m in the market for a 2017 MBP and I can only justify buying at the refurb prices. I assume Apple has the same no-questions-asked returns policy on refurbs. Does anyone know?

Apple refurb devices are treated as new, complete with one year warranty and ability to buy AC / AC+, depending on what coverage is offered in your locale.

Not really. My current MacBook needs a bigger hard drive but it’s not upgradeable. It’s been nagging me for months that the startup disk is full. Also it is suffering from “staingate” so I’ll need to get a new screen on that before I sell it.

Can I ask which model you have that has Staingate? If it id the 2014 the replacement screen is diabolical. I recently had mine(new screen) replaced 3 times. All with an awful yellow/green colour cast and terrible uniformity. Just saying.

It was a 13" late 2013. The first replacement screen was DOA so they had to send another. It looked fine to me. My sister has that laptop now and she hasn't complained.

Brand new MBP 13 w/o TB has exactly the same issue - right side is all yellow and I can't be bothered to chase after Apple at this point as the computer will be used in the docking station. This is unacceptable to be honest - ever since the 2009 yellow screen iMac fiasco Apple didn't learn anything.

It's most definitely unacceptable. I still use my 2011 MBP with the last of the matte anti glare screens. It is a joy to work with. Pure whites and perfect greys. On my 3rd logic board but I will keep repairing or replacing the logic board in this for as long as is possible. Have had nothing but nightmares with Retina screens. I just sent back a 2017 15" and got a replacement and sold it straight away (for a hell of a lot less than you pay in store... rip off) . A $3750 (AUD) machine that is useless for a photographer who is always on the move. I've had Apple store managers and staff suggest to me that I get an external display. In other words fork out another wad of money on top because our laptop displays are garbage.
