Are they going to be able to supply enough True Depth cameras to be able to do that? I think the priority is getting enough to move it to the entire iPhone line before jumping to iPads and Macs. Probably won't see a face ID enabled iPad until 2019 at the earliest.

Sure they can. I agree Macs likely wont be seeing Face ID anytime soon, but iPad Pros just don't sell in the numbers that would significantly impact iPhone yields, especially as their release cycle is heavily staggered from that of the phone.

Wouldn't this be news if the next iPad Pro 2018's "weren't" expected to have FaceID, etc? With it coming to the iPhone, wouldn't make any sense to not come to the other product lines such as highend laptops and iPads.

This makes zero sense. Why exactly is using Touch ID such a "burden" for you? How exactly would holding a giant iPad to your face be magically better? Seriously, Please tell us.

Sounds like someone drinking the coolaid.
Clearly you didn’t watch the keynote nor have read anything about Face ID.

Must be drinking the anti-anything Apple coolaid.

Good question. Recent articles were discussing the production contraints with The True-Depth cameras. I also question if we will even see another iPad update in 2018, which I don't believe they will be. Undoubtedly Face ID will make its way to the iPad, but I don't believe 2018 will be the year.

Hopefully not like that, the notch is even more frustrating on a larger device. Without reducing the bezels (which makes sense on a tablet), they would be able to fit all TrueDepth camera components in the bezel.

I'd imagine they would want to continue the same design language to the iPad. The notch is likely here to stay for a bit.

And what about Macs? Oh right, not a priority for Apple. :(

I hope this comes to the Mac, I bought a 13" MBP because I didn't want the touch bar but Face ID would be a killer iPad/Mac feature! I don't have an iPad but if next years has Face ID I will buy one and ditch my laptop. (if I am not weak and don't buy the pixelbook).

the iPad needs some amount of bezels unless your use case is strictly docked in a keyboard base, or resting on your knee.

The 12" particularly would be a pain to handle without somewhere to stick your thumbs.

[edit] typo

I always use with two handed, usually sitting on a couch or table. I never rest my thumbs on the screen though. Maybe I am in the minority here?

Honestly the idea of FaceID on the iPad makes even more sense to me than it does on the phone, considering many of us that use iPads leave our devices on a stand in some type of presentation mode.

Being able to say “Hey Siri” to complete an action without having to touch the device will be HUGE!

I often use my iPad for guides when cooking, working on my project cars, and when wiring small electronics. All cases when I need my hands to be doing something else, and when I simply need to lightly interact with my device.

Big heavy iPads need some sort of bezel to allow it to be held. The only reason there's face ID on the iPhone X is to increase the screen size. iPads can be any size. Another 1/2" bottom chin bezel to fit a home button means nothing in an iPad. Apple may fall in love w face ID, but it's totally unnecessary on an iPad.

It seems that everyone associates the faceid camera with an oled, no bezel screen and a notch.
An oled ipad, really won’ t happen next year. Oled supply is too thight and expensive at this point.
Smaller bezels (and no touchid/homebutton): maybe.... they could reduce the upper and lower bezels(chin and forehead), when they drop the homebutton/touchid.
But a notch? No. I see no function for a notch. To hold and use the ipad you need some bezel.

In 2020 when the ipad is 10 years old, i could see apple release a ipad pro X with an oled screen and a entire new design with small bezels, and perhaps even inductive charging.

Touch ID is great, don’t get me wrong. But I just don’t understand where this misconception that you got to hold the device up to your face have come from? It has a true depth camera, meaning you have to look at it even if you don’t have it close to your face or on odd angle Actually I think Face ID makes much more sense on iPads and Macs then it does on iPhones.

Let's see how well it works with the iPhone before everyone start praying for it to be in other devices. If they want to have it on the iPad in addition to touch ID that's fine. But I don't want to replace it with unproven tech.

Not going to happen till 2019 at least if you ask me. Currently Apple's focus with FaceID will be reducing manufacturing costs and reducing throughput.

Can't wait, will be a nice upgrade. Hoping for something just like this.

This would mean a 12.9 inch LED display. Just not going to happen in 2018 at least.

We really don't know what size it will be. Reducing the bezels allows for a larger screen in a more compact body (iPhone X). Apple could work to put a 10.5 in the body of a 9.7, increase the resolution, and drop the 12.9? I am not sure, but yes I agree it will be difficult to produce either way.

YES!

I basically told my self that i would not get a new iPad pro (i have the 1st 12.9 model) till faceID.

I spend the weekend on the iPad pro for about 16 hours of work related matters and no more touch ID would make my experience even better.

I bought the 2017 iPad I want a pro but said I wouldn't get one till oled

Keep in mind, if they shrink the 10.5" model we have now back down into a 9.7" iPad just for the sake of packing the same size screen into a smaller chassis, you end up shrinking the Apple Smart Keyboard back down to a smaller size too. That would upset me, as I feel like the 10.5" version of that keyboard is a huge improvement over the 9.7" and very close to the same comfort level as on my Magic Keyboard.

Fair point. Would have to agree.

Cleaner, hopefully. Apple doesn't seem to have completely decided themselves. The best lineup would be:
iPhone mini - 5.2"
iPhone - 5.8"
iPhone Plus - 6.4"
I like that line-up, though that would beg the question, what would happen to the pricing? Where does the now $699 iPhone go to from here?

What are you talking about holding it up to your face? That's not necessary.
