This isn’t a surprise. Apple has to embrace their new technology. Any company worth anything would. They can’t have phones using face id and iPads using Touch ID

I don’t think that’ll be wise. There seems to be getting even more screen size fragmentation under iOS. It used to be a selling point for developers. Is it easier today to get around all those screen sizes?
I agree but there isn't much choice when it comes to the new OLED screen design aesthetic, a new resolution and size is needed and it is not something that would happen often after that. Hopefully 2018 will do that all in one go with iPads and iPhones.

the iPad needs some amount of bezels unless your use case is strictly docked in a keyboard base, or resting on your knee.

The 12" particularly would be a pain to handle without somewhere to stick your thumbs.

[edit] typo
I agree, bezels make the most sense on a tablet, keeping them at 7mm on all sides, while too small in my opinion, would be more sufficient than the smaller bezel suggested by that render.

I hope this represents the start of a move towards edge to edge displays on all Apple products.

Bad idea. iPad is usually used by more then one person. It is shared device. So it will limit user experience by allowing only one person to unlock the device.

btw: hope Apple finally add profile switching functionality to iPad

Whilst I thought that this was pretty much a no brainer I have to think the notch would be even more problematic on such a large screen, not to mention look sillier. Hope they can shrink it by then

Tunnel carpel and the hand position I must be in to get at home button sometimes
Wet / Cold fingers causing failures on touch id
Cheetos on fingers causing failures on touch id
Holding pencil then using touch id not conducive to touch id.
Dirty touch id button causing failures on touch id
Having to clean the touch id button if i just had a bag of potato chips.

and yeah, i would LITERALLY not have to lift a finger a unlock the iPad and apps.

So yeah, at times it is a relative burden to me.

Now do the above for 16 hours over two days. See if this burdens you are not. It will help you make less silly comments like "this makes zero sense" when you have no idea of my workflow on my iPad.

Definitely not burdensome, but it’s always a two handed process unless the iPad is laying down.

To play devil’s advocate:
- regarding requiring having to use another finger/hand to unlock, don’t you have to use that finger/hand to turn on the iPad anyway? Even with face id you would still have to press a button. (Plus you would have to use that finger/hand to start using the iPad.) This would be true while holding an Apple Pencil too, you would still have to press a button.
- regarding dirty/wet fingers, don’t you need to clean/dry them to use the iPad anyway? The only time I can see that not being the case is if you are looking at a still screen and the screen eventually goes dim and locks and you need to unlock it to see the screen again. Not something that ever happens to me personally but I could see it in cases such as when following recipes.

I guess one might need to clean Touch ID from time to time, but if you’re using your iPad with dirty hands that’s just logical. You would have to clean your screen too then. Again, unless it’s one of those cases where you need to use your iPad without touching the screen.

while I agree. where's the touchbar for the rest of their computer lineup?

so much inconsistency these days :(

While I doubt there'd be profile switching, I'm hopeful that Face unlock will be similar to touchid that you can program multiple faces so that you could program your ipad to unlock depending on the person.

we'll likely never get profile switching as I'm pretty sure Apple's of the opinion 1 device per person. you want your kids to use an ipad? buy them one each. want your wife to have one? buy him one. so on and so forth.

It seems that everyone associates the faceid camera with an oled, no bezel screen and a notch.
An oled ipad, really won’ t happen next year. Oled supply is too thight and expensive at this point.
Smaller bezels (and no touchid/homebutton): maybe.... they could reduce the upper and lower bezels(chin and forehead), when they drop the homebutton/touchid.
But a notch? No. I see no function for a notch. To hold and use the ipad you need some bezel.

In 2020 when the ipad is 10 years old, i could see apple release a ipad pro X with an oled screen and a entire new design with small bezels, and perhaps even inductive charging.

I think I saw pretty big OLED TV sets from Panasonic. IPad seems so much smaller.

Depends on how much this will cost. I upgrade my iPad every year(Just recently bought the iPad Pro 10.5 inch) if this costs as much as the iPhone X than its not worth the upgrade

Big heavy iPads need some sort of bezel to allow it to be held. The only reason there's face ID on the iPhone X is to increase the screen size. iPads can be any size. Another 1/2" bottom chin bezel to fit a home button means nothing in an iPad. Apple may fall in love w face ID, but it's totally unnecessary on an iPad.

At first I thought so too. But then someone mentioned using it in the kitchen or while working on a car. I could totally picture a device where you look at it and it turns the screen back on, and then you gaze up or down to scroll what you are reading up or down as well. It would be so helpful as using an ipad in those environments where your hands are dirty or covered in grease and food is problematic.

This also would probably be of great use to people with some disabilities as well.

The million dollar question is....will Apple go bezel-less for these new ipad pros like the iphone X? THAT is what i wanna know!

This makes zero sense. Why exactly is using Touch ID such a "burden" for you? How exactly would holding a giant iPad to your face be magically better? Seriously, Please tell us.
This makes all the sense in the world, even more so for the iPad than for the iPhone. Since many people use their iPads in the kitchen and living room, this means often people will often have wet/oily fingers. Also, unlike the Apple Pay scenario on the iPhone, how often are you going to open an iPad to use something that doesn't require looking at the screen? Besides, an iPad with equal width bezels would look super nice.

Touch ID doesn't work for my wife. She absolutely hates it.

2018: The Year of the Notch

FaceID better be a stupendously-reliable technology if they're going to drop the Home button on all their devices. The demonstration at the Keynote did not inspire confidence in FaceID unfortunately. Having to rely on holding my face in just the right position in front of the iPad/iPhone to get it to work kinda sounds more burdensome than Touch ID to me. I like my physical home button (and I really dislike the "virtual" one on the 7 and 8, btw) as it's a way out when the software is glitching up.

How so? Do you share your email accounts, Facebook, Twitter and so on with others?

He he, get ready for a $1000 iPad:)
$1,000 if you're lucky.;)

If they add the notch to the iPad Pro I'm going to drink ten bottles of Hibiki.
They could do it for just the visual consistency.

That's curious, works like a dream for me and everyone I know. Is it a 5s with first gen TouchID?
