We expect the successor(s) to the iPhones 8, 8 Plus and X to be unveiled in September 2018.

Here are some of the possibilities :

Naming schemes:
  • iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus
  • iPhone 11 and 11 Plus (aka iPhone XI and XI Plus)
  • iPhone Xs and Xs Plus
  • iPhone X Plus (to join the existing iPhone X)
  • Or just plain iPhone and iPhone Plus
Hardware :
  • 5.8in OLED: iPhone 11 or XI, with largely same design as iPhone X
  • 6.5in OLED: iPhone X Plus or XI Plus
  • 6.1in LCD: a cheaper alternative - starting at around $749 - with the notch design of the X but slightly larger bezels. It will feature Face ID but not 3D Touch and won't have twin camera lenses on the rear.
Software:

iOS 12

Apple's next big iPhone and iPad software update. It would likely be announced in June this year with September Launch.

Pricing 2018 lineup:

6.1 LCD iPhone: $649 or $749

Second gen 5.8 model: $999

6.5 iPhone X Plus: $1099

Display:

The 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus will have a display with 480 to 500 pixels per inch, possibly making it more pixel dense than the iPhone X. The 6.1-inch LCD version will only have a display with 320 to 330 PPI. The 5.8-inch Display on 2 gen iPhone X would most likely to remain the same.

All very interesting, but would there really be a huge demand for 6" plus sized phones - my X is about right for me for media consumption and I love the sweet spot of 4.7 on my 8 when it slips into my pocket or sits on my night-stand.

Apple’s biggest diagonal measurement for a display to date – isn't actually that big. That's because the X is really just a taller version of Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 8. The 5.5-inch diameter screen on the Plus iPhone is actually a wider format than the X’s. That often results in a better experience when watching videos.

"The Plus iPhone" screen does give you more real estate, because it has a more traditional and wider 16:9 aspect ratio, compared to 19.5:9 for the iPhone X,"

Apple still does not offer anything that directly competes with Phablets such as: Samsung's larger 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+ or the 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 8. So the Plus version of iPhone X definitely makes sense.

The following things will happen:

1. There will be newer, minimally differentiated SKUs with odd names making this the most cluttered and confusing iPhone line-up ever
2. Existing SKUs will see the usual processor, camera, and other incremental spec upgrades
3. We will see no design innovation whatsoever
4. We will not see any price drops (remember, this used to be a thing in the Jobs era)

Not sure what you mean by design innovation?

iPhone X is already a new generation product. We won't see any design changes until 2-3 from now.

What I mean, is that the basic shape/form-factor of the iPhone has remained unchanged since the iPhone 6 - that annoys me. It also annoys me that APple has the audacity to call the iPhone 8 an 'all-new design' - because it isn't.

Thank you - that does make sense.

With only 3 models rumored as being released in 2018, I currently don't see the 8 line continuing. No 9 or 9+. Unless the 6.1 LCD model is just labeled 9? Or the 6.1 is really the SE2.
The new X series can be called the 11 and 11+.....
Or iPhone X series 2?

However, the X was a specific name for the their 10th anniversary. So going with 11 seem right.

My humble opinion hasn’t changed from last year.

They came out with an all new, singing and dancing redesign of the iPhone. And rather than drawing a line in the sand and saying, this is the future - go out and buy it, they launched it alongside yet another retread of the iPhone 6 and left two previous generations on sale as well. To me, it was as though the crowded lineup was an apology for the iPhone X’s price and it gave out the distinct impression they didn’t have faith in their market buying into the new design at the price they wanted to sell it. That’s not the Apple of old.

So, this year, upscale the SE to the iPhone 6 size and give it FaceID. This is the option for the budget conscious that doesn’t leave them feeling they’ve paid a premium price for a phone they could have been rocking in 2014.

Refresh the X. This is the standard model.

Launch a Plus variant of the X for those who want the screen size and don’t mind paying extra for it.

All other variants retired.

That’s what I think they should do. They won’t though. I wouldn’t even be surprised if there’s an iPhone 9 - an 8 with some blink-and-you’ll-miss-it additional feature and a few barely perceptible enhancements.

new X2 will increase in price to $1,200.00 while the SE2 will be the same $349!

I'm still unsure how many do and would use a greater display than 6' on a conventional phone, though. A niche? But surely a small niche case.

I like the size and dimensions of my X - I know that it's smaller than the + models but still fine for me. Even with the all-screen and shrunken bezels the X is still what I would call a big phone in a smaller chassis. I do wish it were slightly lighter like my 8.

The majority of customers are expected to use a display lager than 6". It's clear Apple is betting on it with 2 of their 3 new models this year being larger than 6".

And the stats show it too. iPhone 8 and 8 Plus sales are now split 50/50 compared 70/30 when iPhone 6/6 Plus was launched.

I know Android tablets have been pretty much decimated (not including the Fire ones here), but what will incentivise people to buy more iPads again? Perhaps if they shrunk them down a bit and used Face ID.

My iPad Pro is the device I've been using least lately after spending all my time on the X (whilst in hospital).

I look at it quite guiltily, but it's nearly as fast just to boot up my MacBook 12 than it is to use the iPad.

It's main use is books and You Tube...although I enjoy reading those on my phones, too. First World problems.

Overall these rumors about the 6.1“ model sound very plausible as Apple isn‘t gonna leave what is possibly their most popular iPhone price range devoid of new products. However, what I don‘t understand at all is the supposed lack of wireless charging and even more so Force Touch.

Both of these features are an integral part of the iPhone 8/8+ line which the 6.1“ iPhone would replace price-wise, and Force Touch has been around since the iPhone 6s in 2015, it‘s considered a standard iPhone feature at that point and incredibly useful. Similarly the absence of wireless charging would be very strange when it‘s a standard feature on the entire 2017 iPhone lineup; even the much cheaper rumored iPhone SE 2 is supposedly coming with with wireless charging, so why leave it out on their new mid-tier model? It would probably also be a hard hit on the sales of the AirPower mat as it would mean that all those people buying the new phone would have no interest in it. Hell, I‘d imagine everyone who will buy an AirPower mat for his iPhone 8/8+ and then make the jump to the 6.1“ model later this/early next year is going to be sorely disappointed about not being able to use it.

Maybe these details are wrong and we‘re getting these two features, or maybe there are some puzzle pieces of the new phone that we don‘t know yet and that would make the absence of these features more reasonable (like a lower-than-expected price, for example, although I frankly doubt that). But right now the supposed absence of these features just doesn‘t make much sense to me, and I‘d imagine it would be a deal-breaker to many people. I know it would be to me (at least the lack of Force Touch).

I agree with your thoughts - whilst I don't use force touch on my Watch every day, I do use it on my phones - I hope Apple does integrate it for all their mainstream products - it would be a strange omission if they didn't.

And I love wireless charging - its convenience and the lack of wear and tear around the lightning jack.
