Apple's philosophy is to price products based on their own idea of how insanely great magical they are to us, the fortunate customer. At a bare minimum, they get their 50% gross margin; be it laptop, cable or dongle.

At a bare minimum? Apple's current GPM is around 38% inline with industry norms and less than Samsung's.

Why exaggerate?

OMG...that's going to cost them about 30 cents per unit! Stock prices and net profit will tumble!

Yes. I have been charging using the iPad charger on my iPhone X when I go to bed at night and when I used the Battery Health utility in the battery section of Settings, it showed that my capacity was at 98% instead of 100% like many other iPhone X users using the standard 5W charger.

Charging while you sleep will probably deplete the battery much faster than using a higher current adapter in and of itself. I usually charge my phone before going to bed and shut it off. I then complete the cycle when I wake up if necessary.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I’ve always felt leaving a device with a lithium battery plugged in for hours on end hurts the battery.

So how much more will apple charge us for? Someone has to pay for it......

Coming in 2018. Wow. Non-slow proprietory chargers, which (likely) only need one, sold separately, dongle.

Courage. Bla bla. Think different. Bla bla. Hold different. Bla bla.

I too use an old iPad and an Anker charger with my X.

Think this is highly unlikely. I'll believe it when I see it.

Fast-charging for iPad typically has meant 2.1A@5VDC, or 10.5W chargers. Traditionally Apple-included iPhone chargers are 1A@5VDC, or 5W.

With 1these 8W chargers, then the amperage is scaled-up to 3.6A@5VDC. Or a whopping 360%.

I assume that the charged device controls the amperage supplied by the charger, via current limiting. Or, otherwise, bad things will happen.

That's always the case. With power adapters you need to be on for voltage but can be over for amperage. The device will only pull what it needs. This holds true for nearly every DC power adapter, for things other then phones too.

Honestly, who cares? Until they implement USB-C, Apple's decisions are irrelevant and a joke.

Not sure what you mean. iPhones already do support USB-C charging with the Lighting to USB-C cable. So very relevant that this will now be standard versus people having to buy the expensive cable and the adapter separately. They don't need USB-C on the actual phone bottom to support USB-C speeds. Switching from lighting to USB-C on the actual phone would be a nightmare for them and anger millions more customers than the ones it would make happy. Instead, I think they are done changing that port, and instead in a few years once wireless charging is faster or as fast as wired then eventually they would simply remove the port all together.

Yeah, the 5w chargers are a joke. Who even uses them? I have a drawer full of them still in the wrapper.

They're good for overnight charging where you don't have a time constraint. My bedside charger is a 5W brick because I figure why stress the battery more than necessary when it has all night to charge?

That said, it's about time Apple standardizes on a more powerful charger. It'd be nice to have one standard 18W charger across the iPhone and iPad product lines.

I love the ruggedness and design of the Europlug btw. I wish American plugs were as solid. I understand it’s because of the first lightbulbs and keeping costs down. I guess the only benefit today besides cost is not dying from accidental electrocution and the fact that’s it’s already there.

Yes I know voltage is not the whole story, current is. But all things equal, higher voltage does more damage.

While all and good, unless both ends have USB-C then its not a win for iPhone users really. I want the day to come when I only need one cable for all my devices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why Apple has to always be different really shouldn't apply here. USB-C is awesome, just use the damn standard!

No one wants USB C. That port is a wobbly mess. Lightning is superior in every aspect. I hope they will never change iPhone to current USB C standard and stick to lightning. Although I agree that USB C to Lightning should be included together with USB A to lightning.

No its not awesome!

So close ... just need USB-C on the phone itself and we'll be all set.
Disagree! Its better than microUSB joke but still much worse than lightning. I proudly never bought anything with micro USB. If that had that port it was no buy for me.

I was pulling that % out of my butt. Most understood the point, no?

That's debatable - with your snide insanely great/magical comment up above.

Many here gripe and whine like school children about the fact Apple makes a profit; using descriptors like greedy, evil, etc. Even though Apple's GPM is certainly reasonable and inline with others.

Knowledgeable people understand companies need to make a profit on the products they conceive, develop, manufacture, market, sell, and support - commensurate with all off the risks companies like Apple take in the process.

Does this mean the models mentioned (iPhone 8 and so on) could be charged by (for instance) a MacBook Pro USB-C charger with a USB-C to Lightning cable, drawing enough juice for its need? Or could the 65W rating of the power supply damage it?
It doesn't damage it, your 65W charger also supports 18W charging and a bunch of other watt levels. The charger just adapts to whatever the device being charged supports.

People with USB-C Macbooks will stop complaining and people with older Macbooks will start complaining that they have to buy another cable .
Exactly this, I have an older Macbook but I still have old lightning cables so I'm fine.

I can second this, used my old iPhones with an iPad Charger and it definitely made the process of the battery health sinking faster. Thats why I very rarely use the iPad brick on my current iPhone. If I remember correctly I only used it only twice so far.

I'm sorry your feelings were hurt.

Replace knowledgeable with practical. It doesn't take knowledge to understand this. It's part of pragmatism. Some of the mac lovers (the ones that cite profits and how Tim Cook is doing great for them) and haters (the one that just hate) are not entirely practical.
