you can't patent something that is "obvious" - and by that I mean that reducing the notch and bezel is the obvious evolution of current phone designs.

You can patent, however, the technology that allows you to get to that point - unless that in and of itself is also an obvious evolution of some current tech.

How about round corners?

Sounds good but can the sensor be produced reliably in quantities needed by summer? I’m skeptical. More likely it will show up in 2020.

I'll be happy with any reduction in the notch that will eventually lead to its disappearance. The X-series iPhones look like unfinished products with the notch - not Apple-like.
In my opinion it looks exactly like an Apple product. Something with never seen design (their notched display is so recognizable these days), something that sets them apart. Currently, still no other device has the same bezels as the iPhone. Notch and chin or just chin (and thick top) are the combinations other manufacturers use.

Looks great if true. i guess it would be the 2020 5G phone. Give it 128 standard and price it $899 for the Max version. Perhaps $999. If Apple is going to be a service company they should be able to reduce prices a bit to increase users and get the sweet services money flowing.

Anyway this looks really nice. I still won't pay $1,000 for it and for sure not if it starts with 64GB. It is going to be an interesting year for Apple.

There has NEVER been a 16GN close to that price. Plus it would at least be 64 GBS

I think you sarcasm meter is broken.

if apple can find a way to put the camera module under pixels that can turn off or become clear somehow then we get a truly no bezel no notch phone.

i like that.
Yea, turning off the required pixels to eliminate light pollution ONLY when the camera is activated would be cool tech, provided the camera is under the screen. Not sure how feasible this would be with fID, considering it’s often scanning. Plus, we still have the ear speaker with which to contend.

So, here's why I hate the notch, and it's size has nothing to do with it: It's there... at all.

Either make a phone with a forehead and/or chin, or figure out a way not to (couldn't care less if they don't). There's absolutely no shame in a fore/chin to house inputs and sensors. The notch is a !@#$%^& hideous hardware compromise that cascades into ludicrous software compromises and exceptions.

So, Apple, please, don't make it shorter or narrower or sharper or rounder, make it go away, by any means necessary. An "edge to edge" display is NOT required, or even that special, despite what hipsters and douches may think.

OK, there, I won't rant about the horrible, horrible notch or rounded corners for an least another month... maybe.

No, I'm not trolling. Now, let the flames begin!

I saw "iPhones could feature smaller..." and was really hoping the next words was "size." I'm still hanging on to my aging and barely functioning iPhone SE as all the newer phones feel too large to me. I'm guessing I'm in the minority with this, as most people seem happy with the larger and larger phones. I keep holding out hope for an iPhone SE2, but it seems unlikely that it's coming at this point. But... at least the notch is getting smaller. ;)
I’m with you on this one. The size of the SE was perfect, as I could reach all corners of the screen with my thumb easily. Even Steve Jobs said the ideal phone should fit in your hand.

We though so about the protruding camera as well...

The smallness of the camera bump is already a compromise. It sits flush with most cases, so it was a good one. If they doubled the bump, they'd be able to put a larger sensor and we'd have even better images. I for one would take a larger bump, but I think they made the right call for most. Until either the laws of physics change, or somebody invents a camera that can redirect light onto a rolled up sensor or something, there isn't much they can do.

Austrian Apple supplier AMS today announced the launch of new sensor technology that could be incorporated into future iPhones to cut down on the size of the notch that houses the TrueDepth Camera System used for Face ID.

AMS has developed a new RGB light and IR proximity sensor that's designed to be installed behind a smartphone's OLED display, reducing the outside area required for these sensors.

The company says that its new light and proximity sensor could perhaps result in the elimination of the bezel in its entirety.According to AMS, the light and IR proximity sensor can sense ambient light passing through an OLED display, with unique algorithms developed to allow for accurate detection of ambient light without interference by the display's pixel brightness.

As noted by Reuters, AMS is the company that provides Apple with optical sensors for the TrueDepth camera system on the iPhone X, XR, XS, and XS Max. While AMS does not list Apple as a customer, analysts believe Apple accounts for approximately 45 percent of AMS' business.

Rumors have suggested that Apple is planning to introduce a smaller notch in its 2019 iPhones, and this new technology from AMS paves the way. We've also heard rumors suggesting Apple could debut an iPhone design that eliminates the notch entirely, but it's not entirely clear just how that would work as the front-facing camera still needs to be able to function even with some sensors under the display.

So erm....like Samsung's New Infinity they announced in November.

They might not list Apple as a customer but they issued a profit warning in December because of „weak iPhone demand“...

I don't care for a smaller notch. I want a smaller phone. Phone sizes today are ridiculous! What's the point of a phone that's the size of a snow shoe when you also have an iPad plus a laptop and a desktop. Sure, there are plenty that love large phone but they're not for everyone.

just like the camera bump...
The Notch remains instrumental in distracting attention from the Bump
(every second with it, my neck muscles are tensing and make me forget the latter)

When Apple revealed the XS with that planet wallpaper where the dark sky conveniently hid the notch, it became obvious that Apple wants to get rid of it. No matter what they said before or what they put in their guidelines about "embracing the notch", it's not something they want on their phone.

Well yes... you think they wouldn't get rid of that if physics and remaining competitive weren't in the way? The notch was a choice demanded by wanting a display that covers almost the entire front of the phone but also wanting a front facing camera and other sensors. But there could be other ways to do that. When they find a better way to put high quality camera lenses in the rear of the phone I am sure they would eliminate the camera bump too, if they could.
