Just days ago the Sony news came about ToF cameras that would be used for Face Recognition on front of cameras although not confirmed apple would use these. Wouldn't the IR method of FaceID conflict with ToF FaceID?

Personally, I'm holding out for ToF FaceID. That sounds like a much more reliable and speedy way of running FaceID.

You're in a very, very VOCAL minority.
And how exactly do you know this, have you done a bunch of freelance market research or what?

Not everybody wants to fumble with a mini-tablet, not exactly rocket science to realize that.

The people that actually want zero bezel are the people who literally have no clue how ****** the experience currently is when playing a game. Your hands need something to hold onto. I can't quantify the many times the iPhone XS Max has seemingly misunderstood my palms bleeding over my bezel with other actions like swiping between apps. And no, a pop socket is not an efficient solution, just like my MacBook Pro with 4 effing dongles.

Sounds good but can the sensor be produced reliably in quantities needed by summer? I’m skeptical. More likely it will show up in 2020.

Reliably? I think you mean consistently. If Apple has the appropriate suppliers for the sensor, (if this rumor is proven to be true), they obviously only need the sensors for two model iPhones, the 5.8/6.5 iPhone sizes, and the XR may or may include a new sensor if it’s renewed.

I think sometime around a year or two ago, everyone learned the word "bezels" and heard that they're supposed to be bad, and now they just go around repeating "bezels are bad!"

Do you really think that the massive mega corporations that produce and sell only big smartphones, that is: all the smartphones, haven't done a bunch of market research either? Please.

If they put a fingerprint sensor under the screen, the notch could be as small as a camera hole. Other manufacturers are already doing it. The light source can be coming from the display. The speakers can be located behind the screen. No one is speaking on the phone anymore, so no need for it to be next to the ear anymore. There's no reason for a huge notch these days at all.

Yes, because in a cold climate, everyone will just have to get used to taking gloves off, again...

Soon, we'll go full circle from notchless to wide notch to small notch then back to notchless.

I'll skip that money grab fugly notch game and stick with notchless.

Amazes me how the notch got passed the prototype phase. It looks ridiculous, glad i bought a 8 plus.
That’s how I feel. I got the X because I wanted Retina display and try a smaller form factor. 8 months in and I still don’t like the notch. I have to say however that if they managed to make it much slimmer then it wouldn’t bother me as much.

The iPhone SE is a 6S inside a 5S body; i.e., they just used a smaller screen. Yes, it is cheaper to use the older shell's blueprint and put newer chips inside.

I don't mind a the iPhone SE v 2.0 being an iPhone 8 inside the SE body; better still, a minimal edge SE with the iPhone X inside. The iPhone 5S body is a marvel to date.
What would be really cool is an “SC”. iPhone 8 guts stuffed in a 5C body. That would allow wireless charging as well.

Oh the evilness of bezels. Horrible things. Must have full screen no matter what.
I have a plus phone w 1/2" bezels top and bottom and I never notice them - ever.

If Apple makes a phone that looks like the one from the story's photo, they will sell like hotcakes. I would certainly buy it.

If there was demand for it, there would be a product. There are very few 4" phones on the market in general. It's basic supply and demand, you don't need freelance market research to process common sense.

That leaves camera, flood illuminate and speaker. The speaker can certainly be squeezed right to the top, so get ready for ... double hole punch!

I guess I’m in a seriously small minority of users who do not mind the look of the notch aesthetically, (in fact I like the look) and are certainly not bothered by it in every day usage. Even before I had a X form factor iPhone, I was never bothered by the notch. I quite like that it is distinguishable from previous generations and marks a major departure from conventional smart phone design. I like having the time, battery, and service status showing in the top areas of the screen. That would otherwise be useless dead space.

Yeah consistently. That's better. I remember that Face ID sensors had a low yield rate that caused the delay in launch, supposedly, so I think that could easily be a factor here. We'll see, but I doubt it will make it into any of the next models just because it seems kind of late in the design process for a significant hardware revision. I obviously don't know if Apple has been tinkering with these new sensors and are already incorporating them in the design. I suspect not.

As much as I loath, despise, and hate the notch, I'd live with it if they'd drop the price. Right now Apple is advertising the XR "from $449.00". For the first 30 seconds or so after seeing that price, I missed the part about having to trade in a phone. In order to get a XR for 449 USD, you need to trade in a 7Plus or newer.

Which is what I did. In some ways it’s an upgrade, in others, a step back. Gesture based operation is faster than using a home button, no doubt. The camera is also an upgrade in quality. But I’m missing 3D Touch and the zoom lens. Daily use speed is close, but certainly faster on the XR. If I had to do it again, I’m not sure the $449 plus 7 Plus is worth it, much as I love my XR. Maybe hold out one more year if you’ve got a 7 Plus. Don’t get me wrong, I love the XR, it’s just a lot of money for incremental improvements.

Some bezel is good. I don't want my phone to think I'm constantly touching the edges of the screen when I'm just trying to hold it in my hand.

I don't trust this company to put out a quality product. They were going to build a factory here in New York but pulled out at the last second due to "financial issues".
