I like the X design as well.
I guess I’m in a seriously small minority of users who do not mind the look of the notch aesthetically, (in fact I like the look) and are certainly not bothered by it in every day usage. Even before I had a X form factor iPhone, I was never bothered by the notch. I quite like that it is distinguishable from previous generations and marks a major departure from conventional smart phone design. I like having the time, battery, and service status showing in the top areas of the screen. That would otherwise be useless dead space.

I am going to stick with my X. I don't think I want to pay 1,500 bucks or more for a 16GB phone.

I am sticking with iPhone X too but can you elaborate on the 16GB phone? Where did you get that? Apple's minimum storage iPhone starts at 64GB up to 512GB as far as I know. And it is the 512GB that costs around $1,500 not a 16GB.

That photo of a phone is the end game.

Will it be patent-able or will all phones look like this?
Well who would patent it? The guy sat alone in their room who made the render working themselves into a frenzy about Apple products that are pure fantasy and don't exist?

Apple doesn't sell a 128GB XS. This means if you want to upgrade from a 64GB, you are forced to fork out the money for 256GB. Apple probably assumed that anyone who pays over 1k for a phone, won't mind anything after that but they have been proven wrong.

I expect they price their upcoming iPhones at a min of $150 less, and $200 less for XR. The big question is if the XR will get an OLED or not.

The only thing Apple needs to do with the current range (XR, XS, XS Max) for this year's release is reduce the price. Simple as that. They will sell more phones than they can make.

Hardly some bold prediction seeing as apple don’t update design until 2-3 years after
I still think my new XR doesn't look much different from the 6 it replaced.

In my opinion it looks exactly like an Apple product. Something with never seen design (their notched display is so recognizable these days), something that sets them apart. Currently, still no other device has the same bezels as the iPhone. Notch and chin or just chin (and thick top) are the combinations other manufacturers use.
yup, some phones have smaller bezels than the iPhone

The XR will not get an OLED display, at least not next year. It would drive the cost higher, not lower. I suspect the XR will continue on with current design for 2019 and get the usual S cycle upgrades. The XR, imho, is really an iPhone 9, successor to the 8 and 8 Plus.

I saw "iPhones could feature smaller..." and was really hoping the next words was "size." I'm still hanging on to my aging and barely functioning iPhone SE as all the newer phones feel too large to me. I'm guessing I'm in the minority with this, as most people seem happy with the larger and larger phones. I keep holding out hope for an iPhone SE2, but it seems unlikely that it's coming at this point. But... at least the notch is getting smaller. ;)

I'm with you 100%... Could care less about the notch, just give me a smaller effing phone, please!!!

I'm skating by with a 6s in hopes that Apple might come through with some sort of kicka** 4" phone thats not marketed as 'entry level' or 'budget friendly' ... I'm like, "Uuuuumm... I've had an iphone for years, this is not my first - and - i don't want last years model in the body from many years ago designed for people who can't afford phones. I just wan't a small phone please" - - - I would even love it if an Android phone was small. I'd drop the iPhone in a nano-second.

The iPhone SE is a 6S inside a 5S body; i.e., they just used a smaller screen. Yes, it is cheaper to use the older shell's blueprint and put newer chips inside.

I don't mind a the iPhone SE v 2.0 being an iPhone 8 inside the SE body; better still, a minimal edge SE with the iPhone X inside. The iPhone 5S body is a marvel to date.

- - - minority or not - - - people like us exist - - in fact, I'd pay $1000 for a 4" phone if they made one that was high end like the X - - - i wouldn't pay $100 for one of these douchebag ping pong paddles that everyone loves to pretend are the perfect size. I'm sorry, but if a device requires some stick-on tab that pops out in order to use the phone in one hand, it's not perfect... not to mention, it doesn't even fit completely in any pock.

I'm still holding my 6s (which I was forced to buy as a replacement for my 5s when it died)... effing Apple is just a follower now. Status Quo. They do whatever Android does.

This is certainly exciting. I don't see a camera being installed underneath the LCD panel, because I don't think we're at the point (yet) where the pixels are transparent enough or have fine enough separation between them to NOT interfere with the image. Unless there is some software-side trickery Apple comes up with to compensate for whatever effect the panel would have on camera output.

How about no Face ID or notch and in-display Touch ID instead? Thanks.
Sure, is there another display size or colour you want Apple to offer in addition to their current offerings?

I’d say an iPhone 8 SE is a likelier option (ie, updated interiors in an iPhone 8 shell).

I would be completely happy with a phone with no front facing camera, in fact I would prefer it
But you know that Apple would never go for that, too many people use it, much more than hate the notch)?

You could keep skating for longer with an iPhone 8, should be more affordable this fall.

How many apps still optimise their layout for 4” screens?
[doublepost=1546965784][/doublepost]
That leaves camera, flood illuminate and speaker. The speaker can certainly be squeezed right to the top, so get ready for ... double hole punch!
Right now it’s two illuminators (flood and dot) & two cameras (IR and FaceTime), make that four holes.

if apple can find a way to put the camera module under pixels that can turn off or become clear somehow then we get a truly no bezel no notch phone.
It’s a long way from detecting mere brightness to capturing enough light and focusing it to form an image.

Since they are the similar size, the 6S and 8 may be the body options - to a 5S and SE user, that is still too big:(.

If the manufacturing is in India for all the pieces, then they might not change the 6S "lathe".

If they put a fingerprint sensor under the screen, the notch could be as small as a camera hole. Other manufacturers are already doing it. The light source can be coming from the display. The speakers can be located behind the screen. No one is speaking on the phone anymore, so no need for it to be next to the ear anymore. There's no reason for a huge notch these days at all.

There really needs to be far more concrete proof that hiding fingerprint and/or camera senors that are used for security actually improves security. More opaque paths to the raw biometrics should lead to decrease in security; not an increase. I think things are devolved to the point where more folks are happy with a "good enough to trigger screen unlock" sensor for me and not ones that are far more secure.

Doubtful that this "under LCD" thing is going to produce a better 'dot' projector or results/depth/3d camera.

Well yes... you think they wouldn't get rid of that if physics and remaining competitive weren't in the way? […] When they find a better way to put high quality camera lenses in the rear of the phone I am sure they would eliminate the camera bump.
Many people here advise cases as the solution to the bump, which in turn neutralises any possible advantages of the protruding position of the camera lens, so I don’t understand how a thicker body that lines up to the camera bump would negatively impact picture quality.

But it’s not the first time that somebody mentiones ‘physics‘ as the reason for the camera to stick out of the casing so there might be a more complicated explanation that I’m not aware of?

I have been using the X since it launched in 2017. I had every Plus iPhone before then, so downsizing to a smaller device wasn’t hard at all. I got used to the size pretty quickly and fell in love with the OLED screen, and didn’t even mind the notch. In fact, within an hour of using the phone I forgot about the notch. I wouldn’t mind if the notch was smaller this year. Either way it wouldn’t bother my buying decision if the size don’t change.

Not everybody wants to fumble with a mini-tablet, not exactly rocket science to realize that.

True, but like he said. It's a very Vocal minority. If the Se size iphone was in such high demand. Do you think Apple would discontinued it?
