Am I the only one
Probably not. But in all seriousness, that's great that you can move entirely to wireless. I personally can't afford that. I'm actually using a Pixel 2 XL and have a 2017 mbp, so I am now even more tied into the USB-C life. And it's great. When Apple decides to finally ditch lightning, that'll be even better.

This, like any time over the last 12 years, would be a great time for Apple to up its game on its fragile totally **** self destructing cables.

USB-C with PD is the way to go with larger batteries and newer devices: my 18w Aukey one charges my iPad Mini 2019 twice as fast as the included 12w USB-A charger. The cost is pretty minor these days, I don’t get all the fuss. The Apple cable is $19 in a retail box, the chargers are super cheap on Amazon - I bought my Aukey one for $11.

I think Apple is in a tricky position here: they don’t want to upset everyone invested in lightning bolt products, they don’t want to upset people who only have USB-A plugs in their car/computer. I’d say don’t include a cable or charger, mark it down $20 and potentially save on waste, but some people would be upset over that too. They’re just not going to be able to please everyone.

I think the timing is good to just include the USB-C PD charger with the USB-C to lightning bolt cable, it helps their devices get better reviews in terms of charging speed too.

Releasing a higher-output charger tells me either:

1. more and more people want the ability to quick charge, for one reason or another
2. Apple is anticipating putting ever larger batteries in iPhone, which would require a more powerful charger
3. Apple is already including this charger for iPad Pro, and are bringing it to iPhone to lower the unit cost and as a value add, partially in light of all the pricing complaints last fall

OR,
Apple is going to cheap out on batteries and reduce their size (the new iPhone is 7% lighter etc) because you can quick charge.

I’m not sure why Apple wouldn’t make the switch to USB-C on the iPhone, at this point. It’s not like the situation is the same when they shifted from 30pin to Lightning, where almost all ancillary products used 30pin to connect to the iPhone. Today, a lot of products are wirelessly connected and for those with late model Macs and iPads that already have shifted to USB-C, it would really cut down on the need to carry multiple cables.

I know I would love to just have to take my one USB-C cable and 18w charger from my iPP 12.9 with me when I travel, and given its speed of charging, I could charge both my iPhone X and iPP with the one cord and power block.

As has been explained million times, because of ****** USB-C Cable. And because of MFi licensing revenue. And if you had to ask why iPad Pro had USB-C, look at the controller size of USB-C on iPad Pro, it is gigantic compared to lightning.

And I still think lightning is better as a plug. Could be updated to 5Gbps transfer speed.

Apple really do frustrate the living daylights out me sometimes. How about just ditching the Lightening connector and adopting USB-C like everyone else?

Because they won't get licensing fees on every single thing that ships with an official Lightning connector.

You don't become a $1T company by being consumer-focused.

I refuse to read another comment that whines about USB-C on iOS devices.
We are really at a point where they need to switch over the USB-C. They have these Macbooks with nothing but USB-C, but the phones and iPads are lightning? But the iPad pro is USB-C? I thought Jobs kept talking about one port that can connect ALL of your devices without fussing over whether or not you had the right wire. I'm pretty sure he meant all devices, not just Apple devices.

I mean, do people really defend the lightning cable? Why?

adding 18W charger to the iPhone bundle pack is a big big risk for Apple, as the margins are already very very tight, but they are here to serve their clients, not to make unproportioned amount of cash

The nonstandard Lightning connector is something that feels like a holdover from a time when devices like the iPhone were treated as portable accessories, rather than standalone computers that handled day-to-day work with standard ports to act as a hub for these accessories. Prior to Lightning it was the 30-pin connector on iPods, also nonstandard.

But now that Apple wants to get away with charging as much as a traditional laptop or desktop computer for an iPhone, things definitely need to change.

they will add USB-C when USB-L went out, I mean, is Apple, the "dongle lover" company, now a days in a big crisis as they has embraced more standards than ever, but they will be strong, new dongles for new and different ports are being designing, don't give up!

they force you to use USB-C on their laptops and iPad Pro, not in their iPhone or Magic Mouse, it's a complicated plan, for bright minds, you never would understand

I have one that came with my iPad Pro. It charges my iPhone to 50% in like 15 minutes. The rest takes longer but it's pretty amazing for a quick top up a couple of times during the day.

I'm travelling tomorrow and thinking of taking just this brick to quickly charge my iPhone and iPad but I still have my Watch. I wonder if the Watch will support this if plugged in with a USB-A to C adapter.

I tried the adapter from Apple and it does charge the Watch. You can also buy a Watch cable that has USB-C on the end, but that cable only comes in .3m cable length, it's very short. Also, you can buy the Apple Watch charging stand and that has a Lightning in port, so you can use any Lightning cable you have (either C or A at the other end).

The problem I have with this (other than the 20 existing cables) is that the USB-C end doesn't work with all the USB ports in cars, airports, airplanes, wall circuits, hotels, etc. I guess I'll just use my existing Lightning to USB-A cables and store this one for future use.

Cars, airports, hotels, cafes etc are all switching to Qi charging. The last 3 hotels I stayed at, all had either Qi built into the night table or the alarm clock. The Starbucks near me has Qi pads under the tables. I rent cars a few times a month and lately, I've been finding that they all have Qi in the console.

Apple is really jumping over USB-C for the iPhone, straight to wireless charging. I think that when they drop Lightning, it'll be for a completely sealed phone, with no physical ports at all.

Data transfer is happening either via AirDrop or iCloud. Unlike the iPad, which is a computer that often requires accessories to be connected, the phone is a pocketable device that users are less likely to connect accessories to. Back with the original iPhone, the dock connector was critical for data to connect the phone to iTunes to sync and was often used in speaker docks to play music. Now all that is done with iCloud and AirPlay. The Lightning port has become nothing more than a charging port and that function is being filled in by Qi.

Am I the only one that doesn’t care about a charger in the box.
Can’t wait for apple to ditch the ac adapter entirely, from the iPhone box.

Because you know Apple will pass those savings onto you!

I thought Jobs kept talking about one port that can connect ALL of your devices without fussing over whether or not you had the right wire.

Did he? Jobs' Apple made tons of proprietary connectors. They used the 30pin while the competitors used first miniUSB then microUSB. Jobs didn't care about using something proprietary. Hell, he even pushed for Firewire while the rest of the world stuck with USB in the first few iPods. A lot of PC machines couldn't even connect to Firewire at all. Not to mention they created video port after video port after video port on the Mac.

Time to stop ripping off your constituents and include these 'rapid' items and whatever with the damn devices to begin with. Include the rapid charger with your iPhone/iPad - I-Idiots.

Also - here's an idea - when you sell a USB-C AC adapter for your MacBook Pro - you include the USB-C cable with it and the AC Adapter cable to the wall or make the USB-C AC Adapter cheaper so if I have to order all three parts, it equals the cost of the original MagSafe2 adapter that had all those items.

Reeks of Money-grubbing on an epic scale. This frustration with Apple might be part of the reason I say goodbye to apple in 2019... there just seem to be some better alternatives coming out.
