Seriously, how much time do you spend looking at the back of your phone.

For people that don't use a case, the bump makes it wobble when you place it on a desk face up, the logical way to place a device with a screen on the face side.

However, my guess (and others) is that Apple sees that 90%+ of people use their iPhone with a case, so it comes down to "iPhone + Case" depth, and in that case it makes sense to have the bump and keep the battery smaller.

These phones just have nothing worth upgrading for. New battery in the iPhone X in late October and hold on to it for another year at least.

Confirmed: No reason to upgrade from an XR.

Well yeah lol, did you bought this phone and thought- oh, can’t wait to upgrade this one next year? I have iPhone X and see no need to change phones this, or even next year.
Next years iPhone should be BIG upgrade, but...the same they said about 2019 iPhone, when XS was released...

The Next-Gen XR "may" include ~ an additional GB of DRAM.

XS Max: 3.735 GB

XS: 3.754 GB

XR: 2.813 GB -> ~3.7 GB of DRAM ???

X: 2.823 GB

8+: 2.989 GB

7+: 3.000 GB

Oh sweet. Sorry, guess I misread that. I thought it was saying only available in China. Thank you.

no problem, this is old news at this point. this was introduced last year. you can add a second line by using the esim for the second(or first) line. i switched my main number over to esim and this way i keep the sim slot open for an additional card when i travel. the chinese model supports two physical nano sim cards, but esim works just as well, presuming that at least one of your providers supports esim...

if we're talking about the same thing of course)

Same here. I feel like I've bled just about every drop of usefulness out of my 6 after having it for 5 years, so to me, the XR's battery life will be a massive improvement and should be a pretty good step up over the long haul (another 5 yrs or so)

The iPhone XI will have so much headroom that it will easily be able to last you 3-5 years. You’ll see a huge improvement since the iPhone 6+ was almost unusable with its paltry RAM.

The days of “big” mobile phone upgrades are over. It’s a mature product and not much more you can do with it.

This may be the first year I don’t upgrade unless the battery, speakers and camera are vastly improved. Granted, I have T-Mobile Jump! so I upgrade every year and hand my last device down to my wife.

I find it strange that the EVENT Date hasn't actually been confirmed... that's a little rude on Apples part no?

Predictable commentary as ever. People complaining that they won't upgrade. Like Tim Cook was standing over them demanding they change phones each and every year.

They are new iPhones. If they offer you enough benefit over your current device for you to upgrade, then upgrade. If they don't, then don't. There's always next year, or even the year after that. God forbid you don't have a life-changing new telephone every October ;)

I for one am not currently anticipating that I will change my trusty 8 Plus, but I'm excited to see the reveal nonetheless, and I'm excited for those who will upgrade and get a sparkling new iPhone

Massive BUMP - Looking forward to the day when they put 12 cameras on the back so that they can finally be like Look No Bump!

Seriously what is wrong with making a wedge shaped phone?
  1. It eliminates the bump
  2. Gives more room for the Battery

XS already supports 4x4 MIMI on the LTE side of things and 2x2 MIMO on Wi-Fi. https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-xs/specs/ I doubt its going to support Wi-Fi 6 as that's not ratified until the end of the year, but there are plenty of Wi-Fi 6 routers about, not really worth getting one until there are more clients that support it though.
  • Gigabit-class LTE with 4x4 MIMO and LAA4
  • 802.11ac Wi‑Fi with 2x2 MIMO
  • Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology

I read that the XR may move to 4x4 MIMO (LTE), and that the material for the antennas may be changing on all models. Additionally, I believe they only use one 4x4 antenna, and that they were going to use more than one on the new (higher end) models (not sure if this is possible though).

I don’t expect WiFi 6 either. In fact, I hope it’s not included as I don’t like bleeding edge standards in a device that may need new hardware to fully support the final spec.

Apple is widely expected to unveil three new iPhones in just under three weeks, and ahead of time, Taiwanese supply chain publication DigiTimes has shared a laundry list of its expectations for the devices.

iphonedummymodelstrio.jpg

The paywalled report corroborates several existing rumors, including the 2019 iPhones having the same display sizes as the 2018 lineup, including 5.8-inch OLED, 6.5-inch OLED, and 6.1-inch LCD models. All three iPhones are said to feature Face ID, with no changes to the notch area and no 3D Touch.

DigiTimes also expects the 2019 iPhones to feature A13 processors manufactured based on TSMC's 7nm process, two-way charging of wearables like the Apple Watch and AirPods on the back of the iPhones, and new colors, in line with a previous rumor of new green and lavender finishes for the next iPhone XR.

The report adds that battery capacities will increase to around 3,200 mAh, 3,500 mAh, and 3,000 mAh for the next iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR respectively, which would be around 20 percent, 10 percent, and two percent larger than the batteries in the equivalent 2018 iPhones.

Korean website The Elec previously claimed the next iPhone XR will sport a 3,110 mAh battery, which could still be accurate given that DigiTimes appears to be roughly estimating its reported capacities.

And, of course, more cameras. The next iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max models are widely expected to sport triple-lens rear cameras, while the next iPhone XR is rumored to gain a dual-lens rear camera. On the higher-end models, the third lens is rumored to enable a "0.5x" ultra-wide-angle viewfinder.

Much of this information has already been outlined by respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, including two-way charging and battery capacities increasing by roughly the percentages outlined above, but this information from the DigiTimes Research division in Taiwan adds further credence as the new iPhones near launch.

The report does outline one new possibility, claiming that Apple may release a 5.8-inch iPhone with dual nano-SIM support this year, which would likely be limited to the Chinese market. Last year, Apple released the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR with dual nano-SIM slots in China, but the iPhone XS lacked this.

All three iPhones feature dual SIM support in other countries by way of a single nano-SIM paired with an eSIM inside the device. This functionality enables iPhone users to have two phone numbers available at once, which is useful for travel or having both personal and work lines on a single iPhone.

Tuesday, September 10 is the widely predicted date of Apple's event, with invites to the media likely to be issued towards the end of August. MacRumors will have live coverage of the keynote as usual.

should i upgrade from iphone XR or y’all think i’m good? battery health is 100%

Seriously, how much time do you spend looking at the back of your phone.

It's the on-the-table wobble that bugs the crap out of me. Inconsistency of design and law of unintended consequences. That wobble reeks of inattentiveness to detail and sloppy design. I'm shocked this shell even got past Idea Stage 1 at the design table. Carrying it thru 5 or 6 models later....? No way this would've been allowed with you-know-who in charge. It's a terribly awful product design.

This is from the company who painstakingly detailed the innards of the Mac even tho you never see them.

Honestly, by making the phone that thick, they could incorporate significantly bigger batteries, which would be *chef kiss*

Yeah that's always a swell idea (no pun intended), but realistically, I think bigger/larger batteries would mean a lot of extra weight that we (all of us collectively) aren't considering. I said the same, as well, a while back, but I bet if we really got it, then we'd probably complain of the weight. :) Us silly users... we ain't ever happy.

But yes.. something along those lines would be nice. Just not that friggin' wart.

Would love to hear some news about the antennas in the new phone. What materials, how many in each phone support 4x4 MIMO?
Agree. Antennas on XS (along with the intel modem) are trash.

No, the only ones who would complain would be the starbucks latte drinking users. The iPhone isn't heavy now like some on these forums like to claim.

Bad idea. The camera array, however big, still allows for a thinner overall case. Thicken the whole phone and when you add the case it will be significantly thicker. I think most people get a day out of their phone, so don't need the extra battery room. Apple has the the trade-offs just right for most of us.

Yeah the "bigger battery brigade" [of which I was a member, i admit] might have it wrong on that front. Lithium is a generally fixed weight. The offset would have to come elsewhere.

Once upon a time, in a server room far far away, IBM made hard disks (true story! not just legend!) and at the end, they vacuumed out the air in the hard disks and replaced the air with helium! It was quite a fancy feat. No no, not to make the hard disk float on air. :) Instead it was a barrier of physics with RPM speed of the disk platter against classic air (H,O, and N combos) being dense and creating heat [same sort of situation a SCRAMJET encounters]. They replaced the air with He for less air density and thus faster RPM speed of the platters. That's how they got 15k RPM disks for enterprise-class storage. This was before SSD became a thing. [grandpa mode off; now get off my lawn]

Anyway... maybe they can fill the iPhone with Helium and give us a bigger battery? :-D Haha ..ok that logic does not compute at all, but just imagine... "an iPhone that's lighter than air!". haha...

History will look back on this release as the worst design ever to come from Apple. What a piece of ****.
Nope! People already claimed the iPhone 4 design to be the worst ever. How could they know it’d become iconic and is considered one of the (if not _the_) best iPhone design(s)

Apple is known to pretty well know it’s users. And most iPhone users probably put a case on the device on day one.

So the quality camera(s) requires a certain thickness (and backside real estate) for technological reasons, but the rest of the case can be thinner, to allow the package of iPhone and case to be reasonably light and thin eventually. The vast majority is happy with that.

The small minority can still get battery cases or power banks, if battery time is insufficient. And if you insist to use your iPhone caseless and want to place it on a table without wobbling: Well, sounds there is a market niche for stickers imitating the bump height, so the iPhone can lay perfectly flat on the table again.

And how about a “pro” version that covers the whole back and only leaves the camera area open?! Now that would sell like hot cakes, I bet! How about marketing it as ... say ... “case” or “back cover”? Yes, that sounds like a plan! Oh wait ... ;)
