A third camera would be worth it if used to double the low-light performance (with a sanely sized camera bump). It's the area where smartphones trail "real" cameras the most and now where the iPhone trails the Pixel the most.

I have heard from inside sources that the phone will be blue and they have made a deal with Dominos pizza to market it and their app comes preinstalled. Just got off the phone with Kuo.

Phone manufacturers have recently been racing to boost their camera lens counts to three, four, or even five in an arms race to make their devices stand out with unique features.

I always thought that the ever increasing camera number on phones reminded me of the number of blades being added to disposable razors in the early 2000's...

This is the razor version of phone cameras:

Maybe one day the rear side of phones will just be a bunch of cameras....

Uh oh. If these renders prove accurate, I can hear it now...they won’t call it a camera bump anymore, they’ll call it a Hump. Hump on the back. Notch on the front. The Humpback of Notch-re-Dame. Heh heh heh

Kidding aside, i like it. Three lenses. Sweet.

Apple is failing in China, and Huawei is killing it in China. And as the saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Why do phones need so many cameras now? I know, I sound like an old coot...but why is this necessary? The Galaxy S10 is supposedly going to have 4 lenses on the back...can't wait for the iPhone 15 with 10 lenses.

But I used to think the notch was dumb and now I like it, so I guess it's only a matter of time before I start saying "you can never have too many cameras".

LMAO! That is so disgusting. I wonder how many people will defend that design knowing how bad it is?
If it does look like this they will say it's the best 3 camera lens design, all other camera layout are ugly and Huawei copied the design and put it in their 2018 flagship.

The camera is one of the areas Apple can keep improving on to justify some people to upgrade. The iphone has long ago replaced point & shoot cameras, but alot of photographers are even using it as their main camera now. As absurd as it sounds, the iphone has replaced the dslr for some. Or at least become a backup camera. So it makes sense for Apple to keep pushing the cameras capabilities. Still lots of room for improvement. Especially in low light.

It's a long story, and a comment on a forum is not going to be very polished answer, but the thing is that if you have some millimeters to work with as device height, there's only so much you can do with a single sensor and very small optics. You can't really cheat physics.

However, if you can sample things more there are a lot of stuff that you can do better. You can do temporal and/or spatial sampling (e.g. taking images), but something needs to be done. With temporal sampling you need capture time, with spatial sampling you need lenses. These can be used to, but not limited to:
  • Noise reduction
  • Low light performance
  • Super resolution
  • HDR
  • Depth of field effect(s)
  • Etc. (and I'm leaving some cool stuff out on purpose)
Of course, you could always say that "heck with it" and not care of the improvements, but alas, that's another discussion. And yes, that is a hideous bump.

The funniest skit from MadTv I remember was The Greatest Action Story Ever Told

You must call it a Hump henceforth.

The initial images of the iPhone 7 plus with horizontal elongated protruding lens got reactions too. Came true though.
Hoping this is not the case with this monster. You never know.
