I certainly think you're onto something here.
Actually, I was surprised that Mercedes stuck with Bottas, and did not go for signing Max.

Well, time will tell I guess...

I think Mercedes have the best driver and the best car. That’s why they have been so dominant.
Often the best drivers aren’t in the best cars.
Sometimes the drivers are closer in ability. Sometimes the cars are closer in performance.
At the moment there is really only Max on the grid that could give Lewis a run for his money right now. Totto doesn’t want that headache in his garage. But when Lewis decides to hang up his gloves, I’m sure he’ll be replaced by him. Possibly in exchange for Mercedes engines in RBR.

I wouldn’t take the position that today’s drivers are inferior.

Yes, there were days when Prost and Senna were dominant in their Honda’s. But to compare their skill sets required to manage and win in such raw, explosive machines is a stretch as far as I’m concerned.

Todays drivers are far mor about switching settings, waiting for the engineers to touch buttons on their displays and such.

Prost and Senna won their races through nothing but raw talent riding a wild bull every lap.

It was a different generation.
Exactly, which is why you’d never be able to say the likes of Prost and Senna were better drivers than those of today because the skills in each era are impossible to compare. Cars back then were a lot harder to drive physically but drivers today have a lot more to think about. It’s why they are the best in the world.

I respect you view. I simply feel that back in the Prost / Senna days it was more viseral, raw, and exciting that way. I fully comprehend the technology in today’s racing. I simply feel it prioritizes the car over the driver, and I prefer things reversed. Have a great day. 🙂

I much preferred that era as it was the time I got into F1 and when I first attended a race, but I have massive respect for the drivers these days too and the talent they display. I won’t suggest a world championship now is worth any less than one of Senna’s or Prost’s because the drivers are just as skilled and involved. The cars are more intelligent despite having less driver aids, but the drivers for me have to use more foresight as performance is so much closer over a single lap than it was 30 years ago.

The Hulk is back!! Stroll out with illness. Home GP for him, hopefully he gets a good result 🤞 (edit: qualy didn't go well for him)

Another Mercedes lock-out of the front row, but this time it was Bottas on top. Verstappen very competitive at just under three-tenths behind and Le Clerc in fourth (seven tenths back). Albon also looking good (for Albon) with a 4th just behind LeClerc.

Lewis will start on Mediums, though, with Bottas and Verstappen on softs so Lewis can go longer. Considering how cold it is, though, softs might be the preferred tire as they will warm faster and wear should be low with a cold track.

Max gets on my nerves sometimes (just his aggressive attitude). But, I do hope he gives Lewis and Max a serious challenge. It will certainly make the race ‘interesting’...

A good track back on the calendar. Shame it’s not the full circuit though!
Good qualifying for Bottas. Surprised that the race has only been won three times from pole though. Very strange statistic.

Lewis is on mediums. The others on softs. So it’s going to be interesting to see how things go. Which strategy will be best?

I'd forgotten there was a race!

On a side note has anyone in the UK worked out the cheapest legit way to watch the F1? I’ve been scrounging off my parents for the Sky App but (a) you can’t stream to the TV so it’s a bit antisocial and (b) I’m 36 so should be paying for this stuff meself! Not too bothered about extra channels, can switch broadband but can’t get cable.

EDIT: watching the race and Albon is having a mare. Definite penalty for cutting Kvyat’s nose off and now pushing Gasly very wide with a lunge.

I don’t think there is a legit and cheap way to watch it. You’re either paying £60 a month for a full Sky subscription or £9.99 for 24 hours access on Now TV. I watched illegally for a few years on a chipped box/IPTV but haven’t bothered to do it for the past 3 years. I just watch a few YouTube roundups now and read the articles. Having kids doesn’t help as long gone are the days where I can give up an entire Sunday afternoon to watch F1. Most of my friends who used to be into it and attend GP’s have slowly drifted away from it too.

It’s quite mad to think the sport effectively culled millions from its global and UK audience in 2011 as the move to pay tv was something that was blocked by sponsors for many years.

Cheapest legit way is to go to a pub / sports bar and enjoy a couple of coffees or beers. Difficult with certain races due to time zones but you will see some in real time.

I just watch the highlights show on channel 4. I just keep off the news app until I’ve watched it.

Felt a bit sorry for Bottas. He did well at the start before the mistake. Then a DNF was unfortunate. Can’t remember last time they broke down.

Glad Daniel got the podium. One of the nicest guys in F1.

Did he break down or did Toto hit the “Red Button” under his perch?

Just a little humor. ;)
He was already second by that point so I think that rules out the conspiracy theories!

However I think Bottas was great in qualifying and at the start. He seemed a lot more aggressive. But I think it’s pretty immaterial now. Not unless Lewis gets the worst run of breakdowns since I sold a knackered old Ford Escort to my Dad back in the 90’s. I had to give him a tow to get it started most mornings for weeks!

Ah it was like the good old days of broadcast F1 in the USA today. ESPN pre-empted the live broadcast for SportsCenter so I had to wait another six hours for the re-broadcast. And halfway through that they cut away to show a woman's tennis match for about 10 minutes before suddenly cutting back to F1. And the re-broadcasts have commercial breaks - like right now in the middle of the post-SC restart - though they (generally) come back where they left off so I didn't miss much.

Still actually have 12 laps to go, but paused to take a leak and my cable company screen saver kicked in and they show news tidbits - including Lewis winning the race.

Though to be fair, I was sure he would win once Bottas was out, but I thought maybe Verstappen might have been able to take him after the current safety car for Norris. And Ferrari is still garbage, I see.

I can’t recall a driver loosing the lead after a SC. They have such an advantage deciding when to go.

What!?!?

I saw the whole race live.

What!?!? I saw the whole race live.

Not here in Seattle on Xfinity. There was no live broadcast scheduled so my DVR had scheduled the afternoon re-broadcast on ESPN News and I went on the ESPN app on my AppleTV and selected F1 and it was also Sportcenter.

EDIT - Checking another forum someone noted that it was swapped from ESPN2 to another channel that we might not carry (though pretty sure we have them all - ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPN Classic, ESPN Universal).

Hamilton drove a true Champion's race today.

Despite not getting pole, he kept the pressure on Bottas for the first dozen laps, never letting him get down the road enough to relax. And when Bottas made a mistake, locking up, Hamilton was there to take advantage, getting by without touching wheels.

Hamilton did a great job managing his tires also. And when the safety car came out to clean up Norris' car it gave Hamilton a chance to put fresh softs on to finish out the race. I'm sure Hamilton was sorry to lose the ±8 second lead he'd built on Verstappen, but probably gladly exchanged that for the security of not having to worry about doing another pit stop under green flag. The restart after the safety car could have given Verstappen a chance to get past. But managing that challenge as smoothly as Hamilton did was just one of the things a Champion does, while lesser drivers mess it up from time to time.

There was nothing pre-ordained about Hamilton's win today. He could have had a power system problem. He could have gotten caught out by rain, or accident, or penalty.

I feel sorry for Lando after that race. He was doing really well, on track for good points, possibly even a podium before the issues. Have to hope for him that the chassis is good next year as well and allows them to exploit the Mercedes engine.

Good win for Lewis. I hope he gets the next win soon and we can move on from the records, at least until he’s close to getting his 8th championship next year!

I had my fingers crossed for a power system problem right after Bottas went out.
