Reboot in recovery mode, and use disk utilities to erase the hard drive. But before you do that, be sure to sign out of iCloud, deauthorize music, etc.

been a while since ive done something of the sort, but im familiar with disk utility

once ive wiped the HDD, im assuming I have to reinstall macOS?

You're sending it back, right? I wouldn't bother. They'll do a clean install anyway.

I guess I could just clear history , delete iMessage conversations , turn off iCloud , and remove any apps I’ve installed (don’t think any yet haha) and be good?

Should be fine, but if it were me I think it would be quicker just to sign out of iCloud and then use recovery mode to repartition/format the disk. You can always use another device to de-authorise the computer from music and even sign it out of icloud if you forget to do those things first.

Oh but that’s what I’m wondering if I wipe the hard drive in disk utility / recovery boot, do I then have to reinstall MacOS?

sounded like you were suggesting justsend it back without doing anything

Do a manual clean, delete everything and get a tool that will zero the drive. CCleaner used to be great for this, but it doesn't do SSD drives.. well, the free one doesn't anyway. Wipe and reinstall. Call me paranoid, but I work in security... so yeah.. maybe I am paranoid :)

You don't need to reinstall MacOS. As I said, just wipe the disk and send it back.

You can't really wipe the SSD with diskutility. Not in the way we used to do with HDDs.

Just encrypt it with filevault and a very strong password.

It's as good as wiped at that point.

Ugh, at first FedEx said mine would be delivered on Wednesday (both the tracking and delivery manager email said that), now it says Friday. And it's been sitting in Shanghai for 48 hours.

Wish they sent mine UPS. FedEx has always been trash

Everyone else’s UPS packages seem to go Asia -> Alaska -> quickly to regional distribution facility -> out for delivery same/next day.

Mine has been sitting in the warehouse in Kentucky since 9am on Thursday with no movement and multiple duplicate “import” scans. No progress in sight. UPS gives no explanation.

The grass is always greener, I suppose.

Fair enough. I've always had issues with FedEx inexplicably pushing back delivery dates after initially giving me one.

UPS has never done that to me. The first date they give is the date I get it.

My UPS status on Friday was that it would be delivered by the end of the day. Never moved from the warehouse five hours away from me.

Mine came 3 days later than the estimated delivery window. It took over two and a half weeks for me to get mine, but I ordered in late March so I'm sure some of this is due to the popularity of a new product.

UPDATE: The MacBook Air finally got released from customs on 4/19 in the evening, and was delivered 4/20 the following evening. That’s a grand total of three weeks from order to receipt and six days from actual shipment to delivery.

Still getting it set up now. Apparently it takes several hours to encrypt the drive with FileVault and the fan is spinning pretty fast during the process. I haven’t synced to iCloud yet but I imagine the result is the same. The Air itself is not hot to the touch at all.

Loving the silver. Here it is compared with my tank-like 13” MBP mid-2009:
