These constant VSCs have to be favoring Max - both protecting his Mediums and not allowing Lewis to create any kind of momentum.

Max was told to hand #1 back to Lewis, but what was he doing slowing in the middle of the track?

AMG management is LIVID. They are so going to the stewards.

Max given a 5 second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

And additional Steward Reviews of Max and Lewis after the race.

Lewis back past Max.

What a total mess with the communications... the drivers didn't know what to do. Lewis could have easily passed but no one told him to take the place back to rammed Max.

Oh dear I don't know I can't keep up. But now Max has a 5 second penalty for the mistake made in the communications.. this is pathetic.

So Lewis and Max will be tied on points if they finish 1-2, with Max holding the tie-breaker due to more wins (even with Lewis winning).

And now Max let Lewis through because no one has any clue what they are actually doing, talk about amateur hour...

And now we wait to see if the Stewards adjust the final standings or do we go to Abu Dhabi tied.

Bottas pips Ocon by a tenth at the checkered for third. Mercedes is assured the WCC unless both cars DNF at Yaz Marina.

Both teams and drivers playing dirty here but Max shouldn't have made Lewis hit him however if Max had broken down, Lewis shouldn't have been driving like that anyway. The comms were a joke from the race director and the teams. This stinks of being manufactured as a winner takes all final race.

IMO the Race Director should have stayed out of it and left the stewards do there job. Hence my argument this is being manufactured as a winner takes all final race.

I think the Race Director was trying to prevent a situation like we ended up having - the Stewards waiting until after the race to issue any decisions which then might impact not just the race results, but the Championship Standings going into Abu Dhabi.

Sounded like a shambles of a race that was exciting for race fans. A poor performance by Max on many accounts as he again shows he isn’t willing to concede when beaten and this time punished for running his competitor off the road. The coms were appalling today by the FIA too. Letting Mercedes know that Max is letting Lewis by a mere seconds before he was going to do it caused one part of a silly incident. Max also needs to get advice from Mick and Nikita on how to let a car past without braking in the middle of the track whilst being slipstreamed . A poor day at the office for him but thank goodness the better driver won the day.

It lines up very nicely for the final race of the season and that is one thing Max and Red Bull can be thankful for. They were let off the hook with the FIA who allowed them to negotiate out of a bigger penalty by conceding the lead at the first red flag. I have never seen that in 33 years of watching F1! If Masi hadn’t intervened with a deal, Max may not have finished second this evening. Thank energy drinks for a bit of FIA help in the eleventh hour! Not going to complain though as it means we get a thriller in Abu Dhabi and on a circuit that has received some much needed improvements in section 1 and 4 this year .

I doubt Max will get any penalty for slowing down like he did, Red Bull have stated they have complete evidence to prove he didn’t brake test, it was a total failure of communications by Mercedes and the Race Director. Max left plenty of room for Lewis.
Next Sunday will be utterly mental.

Mercedes were right to be angry as Hamilton’s engineer was being told what Max was going to do as he did it. They had no time to inform the driver and the way Max lifted off in the middle of the track as he was being slipstreamed is very unorthodox. Even back markers know you pull to the side to allow the driver coming through to have the optimal line. Max wanted to let Lewis past briefly but get the advantage of DRS on the pit straight and even without the crash, he may have been penalised. Remember Spa 2008 where this rule was adapted to make sure a driver gives the full place back without gaining an advantage and re-passing within 2 corners.

Max was very lucky today and the final show was very much an influence on how the RD referred his decisions onto the stewards. I don’t think either Mercedes or Red Bull would have gotten stiff penalties today, it’s just Max had a poor day. This is his first title fight and Lewis was evidently cooler under pressure as he has done this many times.
