Actually, Brock Purdy played pretty well. Baker would be a step down.

It's one thing to be thrown into a game as muscle memory kind of takes over. But when you have time to get worked up over a week of practice, it is another. I would expect him to have a dropoff.

If they have him just be a game manger, simple offense, dump offs, etc, and let their big guns McAffrey, Deebo, etc do all the work, they have a shot.

Bucs-NO. And once again, the prevent defense prevents you from winning. When are coaches going to learn? And why didn't NO call timeouts, knowing full well they were going to let TB score?

In this era of sick WRs making impossible catches and easy to get PI calls, playing a soft zone all the way down the field is an automatic score.

The bucs pulled one out of the fire last night. Of course that division is a mess, as Tampa is at the top, with a 6-6 record ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Agreed, the prevent defense is terrible. Teams should have recognized this a long time ago.

Bold statement after only one game but he did rack up some impressive numbers:

25/37 210yds 2TD 1int ...

If the game plan is right, Purdy can be successful. Considering the success of Jimmy G, and the one game sample of Purdy,, maybe Shanahan's offense is the real star here.

I just don't see Baker as any more useful than Purdy. Baker has one of the worst QBRs of anybody this season.

Baker is a game manager who needs a good running back to hold off the pressure. SF certainly has a couple of those.

Edit: Mayfield is claimed by the Rams. Probably equal parts of needing a QB and keeping him sway from SF. Baker could be a good fit as a backup to Stafford who again looks to be made of glass. He could play as early as Thursday.

LOL, now the word is that Jimmy G doesn't need surgery, and could return for the playoffs. The QB position in SF could spur a soap opera of its own.

Which is a shame, because the foundation of that team is the defense, and it carries most of the load for the team. Even the offense rests on the running game to open up the passing game. It's a creative offense, but not necessarily a pass-first offense.

When the passing game does click, it's a bonus, but when it doesn't, or has been called upon to come back, is when the team has suffered its most stinging loses.

If those two things hold up, then Purdy doesn't have to be Superman, he just needs to not make rookie mistakes, or mistakes in general, which still kills the team when Bad Jimmy appears.

It's a good locker room, and I doubt Baker would have been a good fit even if one did buy into his hype. I've never.

I believe Stafford has a spinal cord injury in the vicinity of his neck, and that's something not to be messed with, so desperate times call for desperate measures.

So there's an article about Andrew luck explaining why he retired. Its behind the ESPN+ paywall, and its not an easy read. Its long, and convoluted. The Pat McAfee did a synopsis of the article, and it does shed some light on why.
I cued it up, avoding the pre-amble.

Basically, the gist of it is, Andrew luck is wired in such a way that he had to give 100% of energy, attention and time to be a NFL quarterback, leaving no time to his wife and kids and it seems he weighed what is more important.

Kind of the opposite of Tom Brady who chose football over family

Interesting read. Good for Luck to realize what is most important in his life and pursue it. I wish him well.

You don’t see that very often.

Color me surprised - Rams pulled one out of the fire at the last minute.
The problem with the raiders that not bad enough for a good draft pick and not good enough to make the playoffs.

They need really work at tanking if they have any hope of improving their draft ranking

The Patriots are even worse off, they're barely out of the wildcard standings but realistically the way they've been playing they'll not get in.
