This might end up with Diggs on the Commissioner's Exempt List, if there is an arrest. The most notable examples have been Michael Vick (dogfighting) Adrian Peterson (child abuse).

The NFL needs to be very, very careful here. If they do anything against the player, and get it wrong and the DA fails to prosecute, then the lawsuits will collapse the NFL. Especially if the Patriots failed to win the Superbowl.

If memory serves me, the NFL will put a player on the unable to play list in some circumstances before an investigation takes place. the bar is a lot lower then the law to punish the player if the NFL finds they were naughty. The issue is they almost always need the accuser to come before the NFL and nearly every recent case the player and accuser settle out of court and that ties the NFL's hands.

this situation seems a lot more complicated both legally, and morally, so its anyone's guess in how they'll move - especially at a time when the team in question is headed to the playoffs. Removing him from the roster will have an impact

Yeah, it's called "commissioner's exempt" list. Leaving aside this kind of emperor-like powers of Roger Goodell for a moment, the case is a little more grey than some of you think. I'm not dismissing the seriousness of the charges, but this person was employed as a chef, living at the boss's domicile, there was a disagreement on if the employee would be paid during the bye week when the boss would not be home (travelling to Disneyworld with the kids possibly). The beef about the back-pay continued. The boss refused upon return. Employee alleges the altercation took place. Boss denies it. Employee visited the police two weeks after the incident. Claimed injury but could not document any apparent injury. Boss insists this is a dispute about money, only. This all could be (could be!) a mere shakedown of a high-net worth individual. Talks apparently continue about a cash settlement. You don't have to be a cynic just watch the ads on cable tv to see the lawyers who advertise their services. "Have you been injured on the job!!" "Call me, you could be looking at a large payout." "Here at Shyster and Flywheel, we've won awards of over 200 million"

There are dozens of these ads from many law firms.
I believe there's reason to believe it's not as simple as oh-oh, he did it.

What's going on in the Pats organization!? First Diggs and now lineman Christian Barmore charged with domestic assault and battery

Pretty wild to think that SF could claim the #1 seed if they beat Seattle next week. And play every game, including the SB, at home if they make it that far.
Don't get my hopes up. At this point I don't care who plays in the SB or wins it as long as it's not the Eagles with their false starts that allows them to score or the Steelers, but that's just because of Rodger who finally needs to retire.

If the Niners make it, that would be pretty wild... after all the bad luck (and stupid coaching decisions).

KC does this as well...

Exactly - while my own 'court of personal opinion' has spoken, that is NOT the law and nor should it be. I believe it should be investigated and play out without prejudice (which sadly often takes the form of sports stars escaping punishment for heinous crimes cough cough Kobe cough cough) - so if someone who worked at my company would be free to come to work, then so should Diggs.

Aren't we getting ahead of ourselves? I mean the playoffs haven't even started, we're not ready to hand over the Lombardy trophy to Robert Kraft just yet.

The NFL needs to be very, very careful here.
They really don't. I've had some time to ruminate on this and the NFL is a business, all they care about is public perception and if it looks better to put Diggs on the does not play list, they will do so. There's 31 NFL teams who could care less about the impact this may have to the patriots chances,

They did nothing with ray rice, then the video of the elevator beating happened and the league was eviscerated by everyone, to the point they have in many cases suspended players until the investigation has concluded.

Everyone is, the Eagles are the only ones hiding it in their tush push formation which makes it impossible for the refs to see. The NFL also issued an order to watch for the Eagles false starts. Not false starts in general, not KC, not any other team, but the Eagles.

Next season the video refs should be able to throw a yellow flag as well, not just reverse a call made by the refs on the field.

LOL. Too funny. You should write (more) fiction.

The NFL commissioner can do whatever he wants and has quite often. He essentially has dictatorial powers. Anyone who thinks he needs to follow accepted standard corporate or judicial procedures hasn't been paying attention.

And no, the owners don't wet themselves and sue him. There was this same bunch of Pats fans whining BS over Spygate (2007), Deflategate (2015) or Sideline filming (2020) punishments (picks, fines, suspensions, etc.). Despite Kraft's whining after the Deflategate punishment there were no lawsuits.

Here is an article describing Deflategate as a makeup for the pathetic league punishments and sweeping under the rug of the years of signal collecting in Spygate.

This, deluded Cheatriot fans, is why most other fanbases don't root for your success, don't sympathize with you in any manner whatsoever, and associate the Patriot dynasties, Bill and Tom forever with cheating. Its not jealousy, its not delusion, its established fact. Its really obvious when the Steelers get rid of long time defensive players and the Patriots snap them up for a couple weeks then let them go what was going on.

Then the Patriots' coach, Bill Belichick, the cheating program's mastermind, spoke. He said he had merely misinterpreted a league rule, explaining that he thought it was legal to videotape opposing teams' signals as long as the material wasn't used in real time. Few in the room bought it. Belichick said he had made a mistake -- "my mistake."

Now it was Goodell's turn. The league office lifer, then 49 years old, had been commissioner just 18 months, promoted, in part, because of Kraft's support. His audience wanted to know why he had managed his first crisis in a manner at once hasty and strangely secretive. Goodell had imposed a $500,000 fine on Belichick, a $250,000 fine on the team and the loss of a first-round draft pick just four days after league security officials had caught the Patriots and before he'd even sent a team of investigators to Foxborough, Massachusetts. Those investigators hadn't come up empty: Inside a room accessible only to Belichick and a few others, they found a library of scouting material containing videotapes of opponents' signals, with detailed notes matching signals to plays for many teams going back seven seasons. Among them were handwritten diagrams of the defensive signals of the Pittsburgh Steelers, including the notes used in the January 2002 AFC Championship Game won by the Patriots 24-17. Yet almost as quickly as the tapes and notes were found, they were destroyed, on Goodell's orders: League executives stomped the tapes into pieces and shredded the papers inside a Gillette Stadium conference room.

If optics don't enter into it, a proper Spygate punishment would have been lifetime bans for at least Belichick and a playoff ban for the Patriots of at least 10 years.

Thanks for the links.

The first article is September and for all their "looking" the refs apparently didn't do any flag tossing.

The second article sounds more believable, that concludes there is illegal movement 1/6th of the time. That sounds about right, for all the whining, its hyped up overreaction, but the false starts are happening, now and then.

That isn't to say the tush push is not rugby garbage and should have been banned last year.

I remember hearing after the ban vote failed last year someone saying it would probably get banned the next time a vote came up over it. A bunch of the votes against banning it might have been bedwetting about optics that the league was punishing the Eagles for their success (which is the lamest reason ever). But we all know the league is very sensitive to optics.

Heck, with all that, you didn't even need to mention their drafting of a certain tight end, and how that turned out…not a happy ending in more than one respect of the term. 😉

It would be hard for them to claim the name of the team in New Orleans if that franchise didn't already own it.

Actually, I have heard any facts suggesting that the Patriot hatred is not motivated by jealousy and delusion -- ten-year old shoddy and biased reporting notwithstanding.

Last week of regular season and as we approach post season here's where we stand in regards to the draft. While there's only two games that will impact the playoffs, this weeks games could have a significant impact on the draft order.

If the raiders win and the rest of the teams lose - there will be a huge bottle neck of 3-14 teams. A win for any of the first 7 teams could have a disastrous impact on their draft placement.

I fully expect the raiders to tank sunday against the Chiefs, I can see Giants losing to Dallas. Jets vs. Buffalo is an interesting match up. Glen will definitely have his team trying to win, and will the Bills look to rest their starters? A Buffalo win (and other teams lose) could definitely improve their play off seeding.

Expecting a tight matchup between the Buccaneers and Panthers but I have got the Panthers edging it in a close contest.
I definitely think the bucs are heading for a loss. The ferocity and performance they had in the beginning of the season has largely cooled down. I think the pressure is really on them to win, more then the panthers, even though they need the win as well

I think - based on just watching them on cable - that after the hot start to this season, the Bucs stopped sing-ing from the same hymnal. There were a lot of flowers thrown at Baker Mayfield, even MVP talk, and just based on past performance and his antics on field, I think his teammates split into two camps. Those who would walk into battle with a guy like that and those who thought he was a glory-hound and sort of a prick. I think the best quarterbacks are those who have a ton of swagger, but they keep it a little bit more under wraps, and at least try better than Mayfield does in parcelling out credit to their teammates and coaches.

Bucs in this case know they're not guaranteed a playoff spot even if they win. Atlanta wins and the Panthers end up advancing regardless. If it's close coming down the stretch today the Bucs will back up the U-Haul and making plans to tee-off on Monday in Hawaii.

Yeah something has gone wrong with the Bucs.

Maybe it's a desire issue.
