Next Winter Olympics - https://milanocortina2026.olympics.com/en

Not so far away, relatively speaking ❄️

Read an article about the "new" sliding center (where bobsled, luge and skeleton are held) and there is a controversy over it. The organizers want to build a new center, but the IOC doesn't think they have time and want to start planning to use existing ones in either St. Moritz, Switzerland, Igls/Innbruck, Austria or get this, Lake Placid, NY.

Can't even fathom why they would even consider using Lake Placid when 2 other facilities are a few hours drive vs a long plane ride and then a few hours drive.

And this is a reason I think we should have 10 permanent Olympics sites. Five winter and five summer distributed around the world. So every 20 years the Olympics come back to a site. No more countries that can't afford it (Rio) or are late and disorganized (Sochi) trying to host an event of this magnitude.

Olympics are certainly a very big business. Both the costs and the attention and possibilities it creates.
I like your suggestion, but I can't really agree as it is, as I also really like it when the Olympics goes to unexpected places
Have it staionary in a few places could make it too 'political' I think.

We had Summer Olympics in Stockholm 1912 😁
Then we have searched winter olympics and didn't got it. Last I heard, is that Sweden, Norway and Finland will apply for winter games together next time. Hope they get it 👍🏼

Maybe. But some of these countries simply don't have the money to spend billions in the hope of making it back. And then the facilities sit unused after everyone leaves.

Take LA for 2028 for example, they don't have to spend billions on stadiums since they are already there and used by other sports/concerts.

And when was the last time the Olympic Village didn't generate a ton of complaints from the athletes?

Similar to how North America (Canada, US and Mexico) are hosting the 2026 World Cup.

Despite Olympic politics being what it is, the IOC preaching fiscal responsibility is at least good for a chuckle.

I wonder how long the IOC can hold out before they award the event to a Middle Eastern host?

Seemed like there was a concerted effort to sprinkle Celebrity Dust over the Paris games. LA 2028? Yikes.

Looking back on Paris 2024 and the availability of on-demand coverage of every event for the first time, I greatly enjoyed discovering Speed Climbing, Breaking, and Kayak Cross. I wish Parkour had been part of the Games since it has French origins and is an insane, fun to watch combination of running, gymnastics, skateboarding, climbing, and more!

Heard an interview with Therese Johaug, where she promise to NOT participate in the Olympics 2026 - what a shame.
Exoectations, hopes, rumors have spreading as she will make a comback to the World Championships in Trondheim next season. Fun though, to see how she will do against our girls after her pause.

Anyone watching anything?

I'm watching Women's Ice hockey at the moment.
Actually never done before. That's the fun with Olympics.

I didn't know the olympics had started until I saw all the feeds on my computer about the opening ceremonies have been completed.. I ended up being pretty annoyed because nothing was really said about it.

I tuned into the opening ceremony at 8:00pm EST, and the stadium was empty, and all we had was talking heads, with inane chatter. I don't know what time it was actually supposed to start, I gave up and watched something else.

Same. It was on BBC2 in the UK starting 6:30pm. Blah blah blah. I gave up.

I tuned in again later to see some of the country teams walking out, but I always find that bit boring as the commentators struggle to work out what to say (and usually describe the country's major exports or why their flag looks the way it does) and gave up again 😁

I guess with fewer countries that participate in it, and a lot fewer events, and athletes, the hype isn't there. No doubt affecting how broadcasters allocate funding, and subsequent coverage. As someone born in London, and now 25 years plus in the West of Australia, I don't get to see these sports that often, other than when the 4 year event takes place. If it wasn't for Eddie the Eagle, Alicia Camplin and Steven 'lucky' Bradbury, my countries would probably still be oblivious.

Incidentally I'm going to be in Milan during the figure skating final - looks like a 30 minute subway ride to the arena from my hotel.

Cheap seats are $600. I'd love to go just to say I was there, but I'm not sure I'd love it *that* much. 🙂

The sporting events themselves are enjoyable. I even like to watch curling. It's just the opening ceremony and the length of the programme slot the BBC gave to it was not to my liking.

Why do you say that?

I don't follow the olympics very closely but in googling it, it appears that there's 93 countries, which is along the lines of prior winter olympics with over 3,500 athletes

Further googling is that there's 16 sports (with one 1 event), and in 2022 there were 15 - if you're going to trust chatgpt.

I also googled the opening ceremony and I guess some of the knocks were the uneven pacing, the disjointed format as the ceremoney was spread across multiple locations and poor commentary.

Now I've never been a fan of opening ceremonies, but there's some really huge standouts, people are still talking about the 2008 summer Olympics with the massive opening ceremony.

I'm in Australia at the moment, and compared to the Summer Olympics, it's hardly noticed that it's on.

The summer olympics are always more popular, larger and have more events, no question. I like the winter olympics partly because there's really no sports happening in Feburary that interest me, so this is a nice diversion for the next 2 weeks.

After that, we're approaching March and baseball will be on the horizon 🙂
