Dumb ? - how do I know what week my imac is?

Either way - bought a 21.5" from the refurb store and it's going back. :(

After 5 months I finally sold mine. Just couldn't take looking at that yellowish tinge any more nor could I take any more long trips to the Apple Store. No more iMacs in my future.

What does everyone think about this?

Also should note that there's this more-noticeable-than-the-rest backlight bleed just left of center at the top of the iMac (it's a bit more pronounced than other parts of the screen when watching a show or movie with black bars at top and bottom). And there's two dead pixels, one each of the bottom left and right quadrants of the screen. The fan also seems to be on the whole time, even though I'm only running Safari, Preview with just a few pictures open, and System Prefs right now. Is it worth taking back for another?

edit: a couple others

Apple Store vs. Apple support (via telephone)

I just bought my 21.5 two weeks ago and from day one, it had the yellowing at the bottom of the screen. Albeit minor yellowing, after shelling out $2000.00, you want your new computer to be "spot on" as possible.

When I took it to the genius bar for their opinion, the "genius" told me it wasn't yellow enough for a replacement. I was told if it got worse, then they could replace it.

For the heck of it, I decided to call Apple Care (correct name?) and they thought it was ridiculous that my issue was not resolved. They sent me out a new computer and I got it within four days. I have yet to take it out and test it, but they were far more helpful on the phone. They said I could've exhanged my computer at the Apple Store if I had bought a standard one. But since I added some bells and whistles, I had to have one shipped.

I hope this helps some.

Hi everyone. First post here at macrumors!

After 16 years if using PCs I decided to switch to Mac mainly because I like all in one computers and the iMac met my needs the best. I had previously read this thread, but decided to take the plunge anyway. My refurbished 21.5 inch iMac arrived today and one of the first things I noticed is that the bottom 1/2 of the screen on the entire right side appeared yellow.

In addition, when my wife came in to look at the iMac she immediately lowered the brightness at which time the screen began to flicker. I did some testing and if the screen brightness is between 1 and 5 the screen flickers. At level 6 and above it ceases to flicker.

My serial number is YD018XXXXXX which I believe means this is a week 18 build. Is that correct?

Would you mind looking at the attached photo and letting me know what you think? Per the instructions on the prior page of this thread, I copied and pasted the bottom line right below the top line.

Should I return the refurbished one and get a new one instead?

Very Very Yellow .....

An apple advisor just told me that he sent the pictures to a imac product specialist and that person can't see anything wrong with those pics. omg....

So, I went to Genius bar this evening and at first, this genius gave me this "something wrong with your eyes look" when i told him there's yellow tinge with my i7. He asked 3 other guys and none of them said they see any yellow. (if you go back 2 pages, u can see pictures i posted) And you know what, it's actually hard to tell if the display has any yellow in the Apple store, like someone said earlier in this thread, the store is so bright, it's to hard to tell. Finally, a more experienced genius came and did some calibration and he said he could see it. He then went inside to Genius "room" and came back said his imac inside has yellow on the left, the center and the right, where mine's only in the center. funny huh? I think most of the Genius guys are trained to NOT see any yellow. Anyways, at the end, they swapped my i7 with a new one, week 18. Well, i can tell you, there is NO perfect imacs out there. This one has very slight yellow towards the bottom and a 2" spot on the left corner. So, to those who are looking for an imac, WAIT FOR NEXT REVISION.

Btw, this is the 6th iMac for me.

Edit: I had a very bad experience with this first genius. I told him the center is warmer and brighter and he told me, "I don't know what warmer means, I never heard someone said it's warmer." NO MORE APPLE!

I've been watching this for two years! My 24 is a disaster, I would never touch the new model. It's going to take a backlash/legal action to resolve this.

Ok, I went from a 21.5 inch (returned for yellow screen), to another 21.5 inch (returned for yellow screen), to a 27 inch (they upgraded me for my troubles and then I had to return for yellow screen problems yet again). All problems were immediately noticed by the genius at the store and they switched me out without any problem and gave me many apologies. So, on my fourth iMac, we opened it in the store and booted it up and...guess what...we all saw the yellow screen!

I finally had it. Lots of wasted time and effort. So I told the genius (very nicely) that I couldn't do this anymore and this was my first iMac. I also said, if you really wanted to make me happy, give me a screen that works or a 17 inch Macbook Pro. He kind of laughed off the MBP. So he went to the back to talk to the manager. When he came back he said the manager was very apologetic and, get this, wanted to know if I would be happy if they DID upgrade me to the 17 inch MBP! I said yes.

So, now I have a new 17 inch i5 MBP for the price of the 21.5 inch iMac!

I have to say I am AMAZED with the customer service and attention I received. The were really awesome. I actually felt bad that they had to deal with this BS iMac screen problem.

As I said in an earlier post...be nice! I was totally friendly and let them know that I didn't want to be a pain but this was really a problem. They understood. I am so impressed I will be writing a letter to corporate and to the manager thanking him for their service and how great the genius was too.

So far, the MBP is very nice. I do miss that giant 27 inch screen though. But when the problem is fixed I will buy one. Their customer service really convinced me to stay an Apple customer when I really should have said good bye. Steve Jobs should thank these guys for covering his company's butt with such an embarrassing issue as the yellow screen issue.

Wow. MBP from an iMac. Just wow.

Hey, sorry to hear that finally switching from PCs your first mac has a problem... but the imac issue is kinda inevitable, especially when you know that a reburb imac is very likely to be a defected model that someone has returned...

wow man, you're damn lucky! i guess that's one of the advantages of buying from an apple store instead of ordering online, though you gotta take the machine back to the store yourself.

i also miss the 27" screen size but until they make proper screens it's still no good... i guess you can buy a bigger screen and connect it to the MBP if you need some more space to work with.

I took out the new computer (the replacement), booted it up without migration, and went to white background website. Sure enough, this one is worse than the first one! In fact, it seems the longer I keep my iMac on (the original one for me), the less yellow. It was never bad in the first place, but I figured I could lose the yellow altogether. It seems to me that we'll all have some degree of yellow.

I think it will get old sending iMac back multiple times, especially if you've added a few bells and whistles by ordering it online. I guess I'll go with the lesser of the two evils in the way of the yellow and accept that its really not that bad. Believe me, I am not defending Apple. At least I'm yet another Mac user that has this situation on record.

Is this a joke? The replacement, after all the software updates, the finder window now has a yellow background. LOL, even the I selected WHITE as the background color. I clean installed OSX and did all the updates, and again. WTF?

27" Core i7 Purchased Friday May 21st

Yup got slight yellowing on bottom 1/2 or third. Serial# W8012XXXXXX

Funny but it's most noticeable to me when I'm surfing MacRumors in a portrait sized window - all the alternating bands of posts. (Guess I gotta stop coming here. )

When I run Pixel check with an all white screen I can't really notice it. Most other times I don't notice either. It's a shame really because it's a sweet machine otherwise, no stuck or dead pixels, no flickering, HDD/Fan is quiet.

I was pretty happy to pick up my first Mac yesterday. Not sure what I'm going to do. I've still got the 14 days basically, but I really don't want to play return roulette when it's only noticeable in certain circumstances and when all else is pretty solid.

Here's my screenshot.

The right of the screen is slightly warmer (there seem to be red deficiency on the left), but it is all within ~1%. I could live with a screen like this, no problem.

I don't see anything...I'm not a pro, but mine was much more obvious than this (if indeed you do have some yellowing). Maybe it's different in person?
