Well, I have taken photos with the DSLR, and it looks really different :

What do you think now?

...no good

That is really messed up. It looks like someguy urinated all over the screen (right corner especially).

Compare the left upper corner with the right lower corner. Take this photo into a edit software program. Cut out the left upper corner and shift it towards the right lower corner and see the comparision for your self.

I believe no good, especially when you want to use it for color corrections of video or photo.

I'm really pissed off...I don't know what to do...

If I send it back, it will other 2 weeks of wait, and maybe a worse unit...

Had a look at the first picture only (the full screen one). Strong pincushion distortion suggest short focal length used (longer is better). Bottom of the screen has ~2% blue deficiency (except in one place, in the middle of the right half, where it gets to ~3%). The top - bottom transition is very gradual. Left and right edges are visibly lighter (some light bleeding??). Overall not too bad IMHO.

What will you do?

I can't see dead pixels on the test, the HD only makes very slow noisy...

Other problem that I have, is with a external USB hard disk, that make sparks when I connect to the iMac. With a pen-drive or the iPhone USB, it doesn't happen.

And the other thing is that, over the Apple logo, when the aluminum contact with the glass, you can feel that the glass is a bit out of the aluminum.

Well it sounds like the external USB drive is faulty, not your iMac. Can you try out a different external USB HD?

In my opinion, unless the HD noise bothers you, I'd say keep it. The screen looks really good and I doubt you'll find a better one.

The HD noisy is really low, but you can hear it clearly, if room is in silence.

The screen doesn't looks bad, and I think that I have noticed it after the photos.

What do you think about this :

And I forgot to mention, that I don't see dead pixels, but I can see some dust behind the glass.

Does it have any effect on the usability of the machine? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

If it bothers you that much, I believe that is something a local Apple store could fix for you. They could also likely get rid of the dust behind your screen. Like I said, I wouldn't take my chances by sending it back because there's a chance you could get a worse screen, and you do not want to get in that cycle (I'm currently waiting for my 3rd iMac).

I see you have other problems as well with your iMac but regarding the yellow tint -issue... I think your screen is very good, relatively speaking. From your pictures I cannot really see any yellowish tint on the lower grey bar. Your screen seems a bit better than mine (I have very mild yellow tint issue that you don't see in normal use unless you have an all-white page open and really concentrate on the bottom) and I'm definately keeping mine -- although otherwise my iMac is perfect (no dead pixels, no backlight bleeding, no noise).

Obviously if you are a photographer than you might not be satisfied with the screen -- as the grey bars of different grey. However, other than those who do graphics professionally won't even notice that. It does suck that every iMac screen is not perfect. On the other hand, people easily forget that these faults are often invisible outside of the specific tests to detect them. It's ironic that one can easily feel the screen is perfect in normal use but as soon as some test dictates that there is a fault, one immediately starts to notice it.

So regarding the yellow tint -issue I think you are fine. If you have other issues (noise etc.), by all means try to get another iMac.

Well, I do a photo editing, but I'm amateur, and I don't notice anything on my photos.

And regarding the noisy HD, it "scratch", like a normal HD, sometimes. That is what I hear. It's normal I think.

And well, the dust behind screen, is almost invisible when screen on. Dust over the screen is very much visible.

21" BTO ordered 8/14 and just received this afternoon. So far quiet HD, no dead pixels, and three tiny dust particles. My first Mac in about 20 years. Serial QP0340...
Thoughts? Bottom of screen has yellow tinge (to me) with some alternating yellow/no yellow vertical bands near bottom that is quite distracting.

Bottom line: to keep or not to keep? (backlight pic tossed in for bonus recommendation). Maybe I just use the dock to hide the problem, lol.

Cheers & thanks!

What woukd you do?

Yes, it has dead pixels, dust, but they aren't visible at normal use, just in test.

And concerning yellow tint. In Safari, or with the white desktop, it's really low...

How are the chances of getting a worst unit, instead a good one?

You are correct, There are yellow (actually yellow - green) areas, especially strong in a few places along bottom right part of the screen and parallel to the left edge. The worst seem to be ~4% of the blue and ~3% of red missing, totaling to ~7% yellow-green tinge. Also right side of the screen seem to be a few percent darker, than the left one (some of the light fallout can be contributed to the camera light fallout, but this should be more symmetrical).

I've contacted with Apple Store.

They told me that I can receive a new one, and keep mine while it arrives.

The question is, if new one is worse, can I send the new one back and keep the original one?

Thanks Tom. Advanced replacement is in the works. As recommended on this board, all went well by being calm and polite. I didn't speak a word about yellow tint being a known problem, etc - and neither did the Apple tech, lol.

Very pleased to report that my 3rd iMac 21.5inch base has basically NO yellow tinge :) Don't give up till you get one your satisfied with! :D

Hello Daveis,

happy for you!

can you share with us the week this Imac was produced (or give the first 5 digits of its serial number)...

I bought a 21" imac online last month and it had this yellowing issue. I replaced it for another which also had a bad yellow tint.

So I visited the local Apple store and looked at the imacs on display. Each one I checked (around 8) had yellowing towards the bottom and sides.

I decided to get a refund, as i need the colors to be consistent for my work.

Many people believe the yellowing is due to irregularities in the diffuser material behind the LCD panel. This sheet of material may be perfect when it leaves the factory (which is why it isn't noticed) but becomes displaced or warped during transit.

There may be perfect imacs out there. But personally i'd be wary of any imac screen because the diffuser material could still warp or become dislodged in the future (if the temperature is too hot, humid or the computer takes a knock).

So could "slapping" or hard tapping the iMac on the sides or back possibly alleviate the problem?

It was week 24. Although I've come to the conclusion that week numbers have NOTHING to do with it. I had 2 iMacs prior to this one both of which were Week 24 and both had GROSS yellowing. I was reluctant to try another week 24 at the shop but it was all they had...lucky for me!
