I just got my imac 3 weeks ago and I have very good eyesight, and I don't think I've noticed any yellow on my screen. My imac's screen looks much better than the pics I seen on the very first page on this thread.

Maybe you guys might notice something that I don't, but as far as I know, I can't notice any yellow on my computer at all.

Good for you buddy, good for you!

Well, I got my 21.5" i3 refurb last week. I had originally ordered a 27", but the screen wouldn't even turn on, so back it went. I decided that the 27" screen was a bit too monstrous for what I needed, so I saved some cash and got the 21.5. I immediately didn't the color test, and I did notice some yellowing on the bottom right corner. I kept using it to see if it was a huge distraction, and it wasn't. After using it for a week, I am not really noticing it at all, so either the amount of yellowing is not that bad, or my eye is too untrained to tell the difference. Knowing my luck, if I sent this back, i'd get one that is worse, so I've decided to keep it since the issue isn't bothering me. Other than that, I love it!

Just got my 4th iMac delivered and am quite nervous about opening it up and hoping it's a good one!

I have noticed that the serial number starts with a W8043.... not CK for Cork Ireland, anyone tell me where this one is made?

Right,

No yellowing issue that i can see on my 4th 27 imac but still there seems to be what i call a light leak from the bottom left and right side of the screen which when you have a very dark/ black baground the bottom left/right sides are obviously lighter than the rest of the screen.

Anyone else have this?

My first 3 macs were from Cork with a CK serial number and this one my 4th well i don't know where its from, it has a W serial number W843.... anyone know where this relates to?

Cheers

I've had my 27" iMac since May (bought refurbished from Apple.com), had some yellowing and backlight issues, but I decided to just deal with it based on all the horror stories I've heard about going through a half dozen returns. But in the past few weeks, my iMac's screen began flickering every so often and dimming on the left side of the screen at random intervals.

Finally, today, it looks like this and it's not changing:

:( I don't have AppleCare, but I hope the standard one-year warranty covers this.

That looks quite extreme compaired to mine and i thought mine is bad.
Are you taking the issue any further?

Just got my iMac today and I did notice a slight yellowish colour on the bottom part of the screen.
I calibrated the monitor and for now it seems all good. Not sure if my eyes are just tired and can not see it anymore.
I am not used to glossy screens and the biggest monitor I ever owned was a 24 inch. But the monitor on this iMac is VERY vibrant. I moved it way back or my eyes will blow up.
Don't get me wrong I love it but I guess it takes some time to get used to it.

My main issue is when I use the default imac colour profile it looks washed out=/ Seems to me that out of the factory generic RGB profile is the best one.
Can you just use generic RGB or is that used for other things?
Total noob to this.

27" Cinema Display

Just curious.

Is the 27" Cinema Display that Apple sells the same screen as in the 27" iMac?

If yes, does anyone know of people having any of the "iMac issues" with it?

I think they are pretty much the same display.

Both are LED-backlit glossy widescreen TFT active-matrix liquid crystal display with IPS technology. The resolution is identical at 2560 by 1440 pixels and brightness 375 cd/m2.
I believe the cinema display is rated at 12 MS response time but couldn't find the one for the imac.
Plus the cinema display in canada sales at $1099 and I payed $2385 for my iMac i5.
I guess it's around $1400 for the hardware and the remaining $1000 is for the monitor.

Ok. My imac seems perfect to me until I do the screen test. I notice a slight yellow tint at the bottom portion of the screen.

Based on poll results, many have this. I guess the question I have is this....why would I care? I only notice it doing this test and not on any other things I use computer for.

I see posts where people are on their 3rd or 4th Imac after sending prior ones back. Whats the big deal?

Not trying to offend anyone, but to me it is a non issues.

How long does it take to notice the screen issue? Does everyone seem to notice it as soon as it is powered on or does it usually take a while to show up?

I would bet that the only people that notice it are the ones reading this forum and who are looking for it.

Thanks for the answer Maurier. I saw a 27" Cinema in Apple reseller the other day, it looked really nice, colors were just popping. In fact, it looked just like the 27" iMac next to it. Still could do without the gloss.

I still wouldn't be surprised if this is heat related, those current gen iMacs run hot. Course if people are getting yellow on Cinema displays then there goes that idea.

Final note, would I pay $1400 for an "xMac" with this?

2.8 Quad Core i5
8 GB RAM
2TB 7200 SATA
ATI HD 5750 1GB
8x SuperDrive

You bet!

I just received my new iMac 27" i7 and I have already noticed the yellowing in the bottom 3rd of the screen. According to the serial number it was made in Ireland, 3rd of January. Initially I was split between the iMac 27" i7 and the Mac Pro and eventually went for the iMac, mostly because I would save a bit of cash and my Cinema Display (aluminium casing, 2007) that I use with my PowerMac G5, needed an (expensive) adaptor to work with the new MacPro. I'm sending the iMac back to seller on Monday/Tuesday, and if it's possible I might even be exchanging for the Mac Pro, as I've heard several stories of people getting an even worse iMac the second time around. This seems to be an issue thats been going on for a couple of years now and I'm very disappointed that Apple hasn´t got their act together yet. This is the last time I'm investing in screen technology from Apple.

I have sent 5th my imac 27 i5 back now and asked for a refund.

The backlight issue amongst other issues has been a problem on every machine i received. This was also validated by the genius guys at :apple: when i took it in.

I am in 2 minds on what to do now either get a Macpro laptop when its refreshed or wait for when the imac gets refreshed and hope the issues have finally been dealt with!

My other half wants the big 27 imac but i am now tending to go for another laptop due to the issues i have had.

At the mo all i have now is my ipad which will have to do for now!

Hello,

My brand new iMac i3 21.5" has the same yellow tint issue in the lower right corner and I handed it over to the repairs service shop. A very cooperative guy there admitted the issue was present (I even asked him to switch off the lights in order to see the yellow tint better, which he kindly did).

I was told they needed to replace the LCD panel with a new one, but before they proceeded they needed to ask Apple central if they should do it under warranty. I am worried that Apple actually might decide that the LCD panel works normally and doesn't need to be replaced (otherwise why should the repairman ask the central if the monitor has to be replaced).

My question is: has Apple ever refused a LCD panel replacement because of a yellow tint? What's Apple official position regarding this problem? I'll be highly disappointed if they give me the computer back in the same condition because it will mean I'll have to contact the Customer Protection regulators here and go through a lengthy process of claiming my customer's rights.

Regards,

Georgi

Apple has a very good customer service and replacement policies. This allow some people replace their units many times (but usually without fixing the problem). Also, once the unit goes through repair, you won't be able to replace it as a new one.
My advice would be: return this one for cash, find yourself a reputable vendor who DOES NOT charge a restocking fee, and BUY another one. I think this way you may be able to eventually get a satisfactory unit, since many people reported iMacs with absolutely no yellow tinge.

Tom B.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, where I live is impossible to return the iMac and get my money back - it's only allowed during the first 7 days after the purchase (I got it on January 5th but discovered the issue a few days ago. At first I thought I could put up with it but finally gave up and delivered the computer at the repairs)

The guy at the service centre told me the yellow tint was very rare here in Bulgaria and they had had only a few cases.

On the positive side, the repair center is situated very near to my home and I will refuse to accept the computer back if they haven't fixed the issue. I do believe they'll fix it.

Dammit, I just got my 21.5" refurb today and I have the yellow tint. I'm going to wait a few days until I'm all backed up and cloned, then schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar.

I just received my iMac last week and I can already notice the yellowing across the bottom. What do you guys think of the pictures? In the first picture I copied the bottom bar and moved it into the middle. Is this worth going back and forth with the return process or should I just get my money back? Does it get any better than this?

It seems that viewing this forums really emphasizes it. You can see the difference from the very top to the very bottom.

I had a look at the second picture with my Photoshop and don't really see yellow tinge, but (after adjusting image to neutral grey in the middle) and can measure 5% to 10% green and cyan tinge around the edges, bottom corners being worst (some of the effects may be coming from the camera and not perfect photographing conditions, however I didn't see any reflection on the screen).
Yep, the same old, the same old, but overall not the worst screen I've seen.

Tom B.

You can really see the screen differences when viewing this forum. All I have to do is stare at one post and make that post scroll down to the bottom of the screen. It goes from bright white to yellowish.

I bought a refurbished unit. I am assuming these refurbs have screens in them that people have sent back.

I called applecare and the rep said he hadn't even heard of the issue before so it can't be a continuous problem. I suggested he google the issue and see how many people have complained of this and apple themselves have even made statements about the issue previously.

I am not going round and round with them. I love the iMac so it's very disappointing. I am sending it back and will most likely purchase a brand new one when they do the refresh. If I receive a bad screen at that point then it will e returned and I will never buy an iMac again. At least not until I know they have swapped panels to something different. I don't have the luxury of testing out a new one before buying at an apple store. It's an hour drive each way to the nearest store.
